Exhibitions Manager (Full-‐time, nonexempt) Organization Overview The Mattress Factory is a museum of contemporary art that presents art you can get into -‐-‐ room-‐sized, site-‐specific environments, created by in-‐residence artists. Located in the historic Mexican War Streets of Pittsburgh’s North Side since 1977, the Mattress Factory has supported over 700 artists through its residency program, and is one of the few museums of its kind anywhere in the world. The museum’s programs derive from a central focus on the creative process and its mission is to (1) provide artists with an integrated residency and exhibition program; (2) educate and encourage visitors to examine the relevance of art and creativity in their own lives; and (3) energize its urban neighborhood through its artistic and education programs. The Mattress Factory’s artistic program is internationally recognized for its commitment to contemporary installation art. The museum’s exhibitions are created on-‐site by artists from across the country and around the world. The museum’s campus consists of three gallery buildings, an education studio, artist residency and museum offices. In addition to the museum’s groundbreaking exhibitions, the Mattress Factory also houses a growing and distinctive permanent collection, featuring artists James Turrell, Yayoi Kusama, Winifred Lutz, Greer Lankton and Rolf Julius. General Responsibilities The Mattress Factory Exhibition Manager has the overall responsibility of managing all aspects of the artist residency program. The Exhibition Manager reports directly to and works closely with the Co-‐Directors. This position holds a lead responsibility for planning, scheduling, resourcing and delivery of the artist residency program, exhibition installation and related services and operations. Specific Duties (will include, but not limited to): Artistic Program The Exhibition Manager’s role is to provide the utmost support to the artist to realize his/her project by: • Scheduling the logistics of the artist’s residency at the museum, including arrival and departure dates, travel and accommodations • Coordinate all communications with the artists

Plan, prepare and coordinate year-‐round gallery programming by establishing and maintaining timelines and calendars of rotating exhibitions Scheduling the installation and maintenance of exhibitions Scheduling the de-‐installation of exhibitions Sourcing design, construction and install information relating to exhibitions and artist residency program Providing oversight for the technical production/realization of complex artworks and installations Providing and scheduling the installation team to be assigned to each project Providing leadership to teams of installers and contractors Manage installation budgets Maintain floor plans, maps and other informational material needed for artist planning Plan and coordinate any art handling requirements pertaining to the shipping of possible artworks or related art materials for exhibition Coordinate any AV/technical needs Schedule and oversee the documentation of exhibitions Maintenance of permanent collection Organizing open call for submissions when needed Maintenance of a current knowledge of national and international best practice around exhibition and display design and construction of art handling practices related to contemporary visual culture Work closely with the Development Department to provide information needed to help fundraise for the project Work closely with the Education Department to provide information needed to help create programming for the project Work closely with the Archivist to assist management of the online archive of exhibitions, artists and works Scheduling, managing, and executing any Urban Garden Party installations with a team of installers
Knowledge and Experience Required: • Proven experience and demonstrable capacity in effective planning, processes and budgets • Demonstrated project management skills • Ability to develop, and where required, design layout drawings • Experience with various power tools, painting and construction • Demonstrated communication skills both verbal and written • Ability to maintain effective working relationships internally and externally, which includes demonstrating a pleasant, courteous and professional demeanor and presence at all times • Excellent problem-‐solver

Adequate working knowledge of computer programs, including Word, Excel, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator – SketchUp or CAD programs a plus Current US Driver’s License 3-‐5 years of relevant experience, preferred
