YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARIAN Pay Grade: 8 (Exempt) Exhibits strong independent judgment to assist library customers by providing information and readers advisory services and through helping to plan and execute learning experiences. The primary audience served is children ages 0-‐5th grade and their caregivers. Minimum Qualifications: (education, experience, and certifications) • MLS from an ALA accredited library school Minimum Competencies: (knowledge, skills, and abilities) • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills • Broad cultural competency knowledge and skills, and ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse workforce and community • Demonstrated commitment to the pursuit of equity, diversity, and inclusion • Knowledge of children’s literature and information resources • Understanding of child development • Deep personal commitment to public service • Ability to adjust to change positively • Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues • Ability to anticipate and creatively solve problems • Experience in use of computers, electronic resources, and the Internet as related to libraries • Knowledge of current library trends Preferred Qualifications: • 2-‐3 years experience in a public library or in the field of early literacy • Demonstrated ability to gather and use meaningful data in decision making processes Preferred Competencies: • Project management skills • A high level of competency in prioritizing projects and tasks • Ability to speak fluently in another language Essential Job Functions: • Assists patrons with informational and readers advisory questions • Develops and implements learning experiences for children and caregivers • Maintains current knowledge of library and other relevant industries (e.g., education, technology, and publishing). • Continues to develop a broad knowledge of children’s literature by reading widely • Designs and arranges displays of public information, books, and other library materials. • Engages with community through special projects and programs involving library promotion and outreach activities. • Demonstrates ease and comfort with emerging technologies and participates in training as needed • Regular attendance and punctuality Other Responsibilities may include: • Assists in preparation of statistics and reports for management review. • Attends professional meetings; may serve on professional association committees
