2013… two thousand thirteen…twenty thirteen –

how will we choose to refer to this year? Even more important than how we refer to this year is what will the year ahead be for us? As trite as it may sound, it will be as we choose it to be. We never see things as they are, but as we are, for we always view through the lens of our consciousness. We can understand this when it comes to our taste and how it is that something may taste or look or sound appealing to one but not to another. Our taste is based on previous experience and also it can be based on someone else’s reported experience. This often becomes the guide that determines how we will approach something in the now. However, it is possible to be open to having a new experience and changing a mind that was previously made up about something. For example, a certain young man was known by his family to never eat mushrooms and they were never served to him at home. But then a certain young woman, who had no knowledge of the mushroom prejudice, served this young man a meal which contained mushrooms. The young man ate the mushrooms and, to his surprise, found he actually liked them. The new taste for mushrooms came about because he no longer saw mushrooms through the lens of his past experience. How does this apply to 2013? A large amount of people will unconsciously allow the coming year to be determined by their past or even another’s experience of the past. It is a fact that whatever we believe is true will produce a feedback that continually reinforces and molds our perceptions. Therefore, the more certain we are that something is so, the more it will be so for us. Consequently, the new opportunities of good that abound in every new moment may never seen by us. There are a few other people, trustfully we are among them, who will take a more conscious approach to 2013. These folks will make the choice and practice being aware and staying in the now. Since the good that is available now is never seen when one is focusing on the past, the consciously aware person will catch themselves each time they think or talk about the past and quickly make the decision to bring the attention to the now. Such a person knows that new opportunities of good will more easily be seen from such an approach. At the threshold of a new year it is the perfect time to remind ourselves of the importance of taking full responsibility for our now moment. The past is gone and the future is only in our imagination, but the now is our moment to be awake, aware, and conscious. Remembering to “be here now” always puts us in the best position to see and experience our greater good. Jesus said: “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” Applying this today, we might remember that we won’t find the good in 2013 by looking at the past or through past experience. “I BEGAN PAINTING in my late 20’s and took up watercolor because I could afford the materials. As a girl, I had always sketched and drawn animals, mainly horses, for which I still harbor a deep passion. “Although I have taken a few classes in college, my major was Engineering, so my focus was not art but mathematics and problem solving. “Years later I found myself deployed with the US Army in Kuwait and in need of something to fill in my time. I sent for some painting materials and began by photographing the working dogs in Camp Doha. I later turned these photos into paintings which were presented to the handlers. “When my husband and I moved to Tucson in 2006 we found ourselves in the middle of large and vibrant artists’ community. This inspired me to take a few workshops and spend a little more serious time with my painting. I had always struggled for direction but a class I took with JoAnn Mathews was really the catalyst I needed to find my artistic voice.” Be kind to one another ... forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. —Ephesians 4:32

Several of us were intrigued by Ellie Drew’s introduction to The Way of the Lotus meditation at the IONS meeting. We are going to meet at my house Wednesdays starting January 2 at 6:30 pm to study and follow this process. Wednesday, January 2, John Dore conducts Spiritual Constellations for men. His 2nd session, Wednesday, January 23 includes both men and women. This explores the puzzling relationships and “stuff” we may have brought with us from past lives. Friday, January 4, 6:30 pm, IONS Guest Speaker, Melanie Chimes, MD, MD(H), CCH. shares information on The Mystery and the Power of Homeopathy: The Universe in a Globule of Sugar. Heart Rhythm Meditation for women meets Fridays at 10 am (newcomers come at 9:30 am) to learn and experience this easy yet profound form. Starting in January 2013, Enrichment Life Coaching and Reiki have changed schedule from Tuesday mornings to Tuesdays AND Wednesdays from 4 to 7 pm. On Thursday, January 10 the speaker is Lono Ho’ala who crossed into river of light during an NDE from accidental electrocution and later became an ordained Kahuna priest. Thursday, January 17 will be the usual discussion group. Saturday, January 19, Giles Bedard leads a workshop, Journey to the Light through sound; he searched for 25 years to find the music he heard during his NDE. $30 in advance, $40 at the door. Each month, The Second Friday Reiki Circle at Unity has been led by Mark and Jo’Ann Ruhl with dedication for many years. Starting January 11, Judy Ferrig, new Spiritual Leader continues the circle in Harmony Hall at 7 pm.

Sunday, the 13th is our monthly potluck at 12:30 pm, followed at by one of Dan Horner’s great films. Stay tuned for title and trailer. A Course in Miracles that meets on Tuesdays at 6 pm is also having a workshop on Saturday, January 26 from 9 am - 1 pm. See Jon Mundy article. Full Moon Labyrinth walk happens on Saturday, January 26, 5 pm. Several of us are going to Red Barn’s production of Steel Magnolias, Sunday, January 27, 2 pm. Call 887.3269 for tickets. Finally, on Fridays at 4 pm we meet at various restaurants for Happy Hour. Socializing and laughing is the main topic as well as experiencing some delicious food.
