Explain 2 problems associated with high population density in a place you have studied. Alan Daly 2nd Year ST: One problem that arises in an area due to a high population density is overcrowding. An example of an area where overcrowding occurs is Kolkata, India. DEV: Overcrowding is a major problem putting pressure on available services and resources. In Kolkata there is not enough room for everyone so people live in poorly built slums called "bustees". Even so there are still people living on the streets with no shelter at all. They are called pavement dwellers. There are about 300,000 pavement dwellers living in Kolkata. ST: Another problem that may arise due to a high population density is lack of clean water. An example of where there is a lack of clean water is the bustees in Kolkata. DEV: Basic services are often lacking in cities like Kolkata. Availability of clean water is in short supply especially in the bustees. People have to wait a very long time to use one tap and often use dirty water for cleaning and cooking. Sanitation facilities are poor and sewage pipes often burst, contaminating the water supply. This leaves the most vulnerable i.e. children and the elderly susceptible to diseases like dysentry and cholera.
