INFORMATION PACKET MEETING DATES AND TIMES: Explorer Academy Meetings will be held every Saturday from 8:00am to 5:00pm at the Aurora Police Department Training Academy, which is located at 13328 E. Montview Boulevard. nd

Meetings will be held in the Training Classroom, which is located on the 2 floor. There is an outside entrance to the Training Room, which is on the north side of the building. There are stairs leading up to the door. The door will be opened 15 minutes prior to each meeting. Explorer Recruits should enter the classroom using the outside entrance and should not enter the building through the main public entrance. Recruits should park their vehicles in the parking lot on the southwest corner of East Montview Boulevard and North Wheeling Street. ATTENDANCE: The following are rules regarding attendance that all members of Explorer Post 2024 are required to follow: All Explorer Recruits are required to attend every meeting of the Academy. (Per Post SOP 4.11) All Explorer Recruits must arrive on time. Any Explorer Recruit arriving more than five minutes late is considered tardy. Any Explorer Recruit arriving more than thirty minutes late is considered absent (Per Post SOP 5.5) Any Explorer Recruit with three unexcused absences in a row will be terminated from the Academy (Per POST SOP 5.5) The only excused absences from Academy Meetings will be illness or family emergencies. The Academy Staff understands that scheduling conflicts come up that are out of your control and we will try to work with possible unforeseen conflicts. However, there is a lot of information that the department requires us to teach in a short amount of time. If an Explorer Recruit misses a meeting it is their responsibility to get with another Recruit to obtain any notes, information or handouts from the class that they missed. Recruits CAN NOT miss practical days. If they do they will not pass the Academy. If an Explorer Recruit is going to be absent or late to any meeting it is their responsibility to contact Explorer Sergeant Mendoza at (720-620-9364) as soon as possible. If you cannot get a hold of him contact Officer Singleton (303-503-5299) For each unexcused absence 5 points will be deducted from the Recruits final cumulative score. For each unexcused tardy 2 points will be deducted from the Recruits final cumulative score.

EXPLORER RECRUIT UNIFORM REQUIRMENTS: The Explorer Academy Uniform will consist of the following: Explorer Polo Shirt Navy Blue BDU uniform pants. Plain black leather uniform Velcro belt or plain black leather belt with plain silver belt buckle. Black socks Plain, black round toed boots. Explorer T-shirt (only to be worn during Physical Fitness Classes) Explorer Sweatshirt Explorer shorts The Explorer Polo, T-shirt, sweatshirt and shorts will be provided on the first day of the academy. The other items you are required to purchase. Most of the items can be purchased at any Police Supply Store or Army Surplus Store. The Aurora Police Department purchases its equipment from Neves Uniforms, which is located at 5120 Osage Street #200, Denver, Colorado 80221 (1800-530-2015) All Explorer Recruits will be required to be in full uniform by the second meeting (January 12th). All leather items are required to be kept polished at all times. There will be periodic uniform inspections done by the Explorer Academy Staff and Explorer Command Staff so try to look your best at all times. There will be physical fitness training at the end of each meeting. Recruits should always have some type of work out clothes accessible to them. During physical fitness training Explorers will be required to wear the Explorer T-shirt or sweatshirt. Some physical training will be held outdoors so Explorer Recruits should dress properly for the weather. All Explorer Recruits should have cold weather gear accessible to them while attending the Explorer Academy. They will be issued Explorer sweatshirts which will be worn during cold weather days. Explorer Recruits are prohibited from wearing any other items on their uniform (i.e.: sam brown belts, handcuffs, etc.) unless approved by the Academy Advisor. They are only permitted to wear their uniforms during Explorer functions. (Recruits can also purchase extra T-shirts if they would like for $10.00.) * Provided by the Academy. *** A flashlight and handcuffs are recommended but not required. PERSONAL APPEARANCE: Listed below is the Explorer Post Policy regarding the appearance of all of its members. All Explorer Recruits will follow the below listed regulations while attending the Explorer Academy: Hair Hair must be neat and styles must permit the proper wear of the prescribed headgear (hats). Hair is not to be dyed an unnatural color. Shaved geometric patterns and letters are strictly prohibited. Items used by Explorer Recruits to hold the hair in place will be concealed as much as possible and will be of a color and style that blends with the hair. Decorative items such as ribbons will not be worn in the hair. Female Explorer recruits will ensure their hair does not extend beyond the bottom of the collar. Ponytails are authorized but not recommended. A bun, worn low on the head to allow for proper hat wear is the preferred method for long hair. Male Explorer Recruits will ensure their hair is cut or styled so that when standing, looking straight ahead, the hair does not extend below the middle of the ear on the sides or below the top of the collar on the back. Depth of hair may not exceed two (2) inches at any point. The hair will present a tapered appearance on the sides and back of the head. Hair styles will not present a ragged, unkempt or extreme appearance Facial Hair All Explorer Recruits will present a clean shaven appearance. Sideburns will be neatly trimmed and straight without a flare. Sideburns will not extend past the center of the ear. Mustaches will be neatly trimmed and not extend more than ½ inch beyond, or below, the corners of the mouth. No mustache will be waxed or twisted at the ends, nor pulled up in any manner. Fingernails Fingernails will not extend more than one fourth inch from the fingertip. Nails are not to interfere with the efficient operation of police equipment. Fingernail polish may be worn, but coloring will be subdued and moderate in tone and application Makeup Female Explorer Recruits may wear facial make-up or coloring that is subdued and moderate in tone and application. Decals and other forms of ornamentation is prohibited Jewelry Explorer Recruits may wear jewelry, which is conservative and in good taste, provided the item does not jeopardize safety of the members or other members and does not interfere with training. Conservative rings may be worn. Extremely large or gaudy jewelry items and earcuffs are prohibited. Female Explorer Recruits may wear no more than two pairs of earrings. Earring may not hang below the ear and should be stud type to prevent being ripped from the ear. Male Explorers are prohibited from wearing earrings. any other form of visible body piercing items or other visible jewelry to include tongue piercings. All jewelry items worn with the uniform must be conservative and in good taste. Body Art Body art is defined as procedures used to alter the body’s appearance such as branding, scarification, tongue splitting or tattoos. Explorer Recruits having body art on their arms will cover the body art while on duty by covering their arms with a long sleeve plain navy blue shirt that can be worn under the Recruits polo or tshirt. Explorer Recruits having body art on their legs will not be allowed to wear shorts during Physical training. Explorer members having body art on their face, neck, head, tongue or hands will cover the body art if it is reasonable and practical to do so. The Post Advisor retains the authority to determine reasonable and practical methods to conceal such body art RULES OF CONDUCT: No food is permitted during class. Typically there will be a one-hour lunch break; however some days there will only be a thirty minute lunch break. Explorers are permitted to leave for lunch or can bring their lunch. During that time they will be permitted to eat in the classroom. A microwave will be available for use. Drinks are permitted at the discretion of the class instructor. All cell phones and pagers are to be turned off and can only be used during breaks. Use of the classroom computer, TV, VCR, and phones is prohibited unless authorized by an Academy Staff member. When a new instructor enters the classroom Explorer Sergeant Smith will call the class to attention. All Explorer Recruits are required to stop what they are doing and come to the position of attention (standing, hands to your side facing the front of the classroom) until the instructor advises you to take your seat. There will be no talking when a class is in session. No horseplay will be tolerated. The Explorer Academy is here to enhance your learning in the field of law enforcement. When we are doing practicals please take the training seriously and follow all directions of the instructors or Explorers assisting with the training. All Explorer Recruits will address all Academy Staff, Instructors, Advisors, and Explorers by there appropriate rank or title (i.e.: Officer, Explorer Agent, and Sergeant). If you are unsure of their name you will address them as sir or ma’am. This will be standard procedure throughout the Explorer Academy. When recruits have a question or are answering a question given to the entire class they will raise their hand and wait until they are called upon before speaking. Explorer Recruits are only permitted to be at the Police Academy Building. While at the Academy they are only permitted to be in the Training Classroom. During breaks the Explorer Recruits are permitted to go outside and may use the restrooms located in the Academy building. Explorer Recruits are prohibited from using illegal drugs and alcohol at any time. Explorer Recruits under the age of 18 are prohibited from using tobacco products. Recruits over the age of 18 may only use tobacco products when not engaged in Explorer Activities. Cheating or lying will not be tolerated and may result in termination from the Explorer Academy. Remember integrity is the highest attribute needed in any law enforcement officer. The Aurora Police Department nor Explorer Post 2024 will tolerate any sexual harassment or comments made during the course of the Explorer Academy. After class all Recruits will be required to clean up after themselves and will leave the classroom like they found it. Please be careful with all equipment used during training exercises. Explorer Recruits will follow the directions and orders of all Instructors, Advisors, and Explorers. They will also be courteous and respectful to all Department, Post, and Explorer Academy Members. Explorer Recruits are prohibited from wearing their uniform or any equipment while not engaged in Explorer Activities. DISCIPLINE: Minor infractions of the rules will be handled by the Explorer Academy Staff. Most discipline given will consist of physical training (push-ups, running laps, etc.). Major infraction of Academy rules, Post SOP’s or Department Directives will be handled by the Academy Advisor and will be dealt with as directed by Post SOP’s. TESTING: There will be four tests throughout the Academy. Tests will be given the first Saturday of every month and will cover classes that were taught the previous month. The final exam will be held on th April 16 and will cover all of the material taught during the course of the Explorer Academy. The final exam will also consist of mock calls that the Recruits will have to handle as if they were actual Police Officers. To pass the academy all Recruits must have a cumulative score of at least 70% to pass the Academy. Failure to pass will result in dismissal from the Post. SUMMARY: The Explorer Academy Staff knows this seems like a lot of rules. But they are designed to keep you and those around you safe. They are also there to help you become the best Police Explorer you can be and to start you off in the right direction towards your career in Law Enforcement.
