These new HLC 3s are a living embodiment of the principles that the C.H.E.K Institute teaches and we’re excited to see all the great work that they will be sharing with the world in the future!
Ask Paul: Candida? Question: I have a prospective client that has Candida and I would love some information on the causes, treatments, and exercise prescriptions guidelines. Can you put me in the right direction and give me any pertinent advise concerning nutrition and how Candida will affect response to exercise?
Answer: Candida is a common, and fairly elusive problem. Because the symptom profile is so diverse, it is often mistaken for many other problems. For example, here are some of the commonly

Forward Ball Roll Equipment Needed 1. Swiss ball 2. (Optional) A partner holding a dowel rod, golf club or extremely light barbell
How to Perform the Stretch
• Kneel on a comfortable surface, with forearms on Swiss ball and palms facing one another. There should be a 90 degree angle at hip and shoulder. • Inhale and gently draw belly button in toward spine. Keep natural curve in lower back (neutral spine) - do not let it sag or flex. If you have a partner holding a dowel rod along your spine, it should touch at the sacrum, mid-thoracic spine and back of the head. • Slowly roll forward, moving from hips and shoulders at the same time. • Take three seconds to roll out, stopping before you can no longer hold proper spinal alignment and/or cannot maintain a drawn-in belly button. • Hold end position for three seconds, then return to starting position in three seconds, moving the hips and shoulders at the same time. Do not round the back. • One complete repetition will take nine seconds. Repeat 8-12 times. Taken from the Golf Fitness Card Set

listed symptoms reported by Candida overgrowth sufferers: • Irritable bowel syndrome • Constipation, diarrhea, or an alternation between the two • Flatulence • Vaginal yeast infections • Energy fluctuations throughout the day • Episodes of fuzzy headedness or lapses of concentration • Problems maintaining an ideal weight; particularly hard to lose weight even when making efforts with dietary and exercise changes (as typically prescribed that is!) • Mysterious symptoms that are hard to figure out • Skin changes, ranging from spots, pimples, flaking, itching, and more… Anyone who eats the modern diet and shops at typical supermarkets for commercially farmed foods and meats, dramatically increases the likelihood of having Candida overgrowth or some other such form of yeast and/or fungal overgrowth. While Candida albicans is a symbiotic organism in the healthy host with balanced gut flora, it becomes parasitic at the point of overgrowth; which is indicated by the presence of multiple correlating symptoms or by the presence of antibodies identified through diagnostic testing. Candida, like all molds, fungi, and parasitic organisms, LOVES SUGAR! It is not particular either…it is very happy to thrive on organic sugar sources if you should do what many do, which is justify eating sweet things because they are organic! Anyone suffering from Candida overgrowth should go on an antifungal diet immediately! The
essence of an antifungal diet can be outlined as: • No simple carbohydrates. • No fruit other than green apples, which should be peeled first because fungus usually resides under the skin of fruits. • Avoidance of all root vegetables, with the exception of carrots as carrots have antifungal properties. Drinking 1-3 glasses of fresh squeezed (not pasteurized!) carrot juice per day, with as much raw ginger and garlic as you can tolerate, will be a BIG help! • Eat grain-free foods, which mean no breads, crackers, pasta, breakfast cereals – basically, most of the garbage they sell in most stores! • Avoid all commercially farmed and processed sandwich meats. Many of the sandwich meats have gluten as filler in them, which further inflames the intestines of a large percentage of the population. Commercial animal farms feed animals cheap grains that have such high levels of mycotoxins (fungal toxins) that they cannot be sold for human consumption. When you eat such meats, you ingest high amounts of the fungal toxins that have bio-accumulated in the animal’s meat and fat. Therefore, you must seek out free-range meats that are preferably free-range organic. • DO NOT drink any sweetened beverages. Coffee is a known fungal carrier so that should be substituted by green tea and/or Yerba Matae. Stevia leaf extract can be used to sweeten as needed. • Avoid all dairy except full fat organic cream and butter – unless you know you are dairy intolerant. In this case, Ghee can safely substitute for butter.

Holistic Living
Tips on Seafood Safety • Farm-raised fish isn’t as safe as it may sound. As with cattle, farm-raised fish are fed grains and soy and are given a wide range of antibiotics and other drugs. • If the fish farm is located anywhere near a major industrial complex or commercial farming operation, or anywhere near a river that feeds into the coastline, you run a significant risk of eating fish that’s high in pesticides and industrial chemical residues. • Be careful with the labeling of seafood. Currently in the United States, the USDA has no organic certifications for seafood and the label “wild-caught” does not guarantee its quality or its sustainable fishing practices. Ask your local fishmonger about the source of the seafood and if they don’t know, then don’t buy it. • Rotating the sources of protein that you consume on a daily basis will minimize your chances of over-exposing yourself to any given pesticide, antibiotic or drug residues that may have tainted your food, not to mention heavy metal contamination. • Be aware that large, deep water fish such as swordfish, shark, tuna and others accumulate more mercury than smaller fish with shorter life spans. • When cooking fish, particularly the bigger fish that accumulate heavy metals, it’s a good idea to grill or broil them to allow the juices to drip out.
Taken from You Are What You Eat
C li c k H e r e
What You Can Eat: • Nearly all above-ground vegetables • Carrots and carrot juice • All quality meats, fowl, and fish • Green apples (peeled) and occasionally fresh berries • Drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily, adding a pinch of unprocessed sea salt to each liter of water (preferably from France or New Zealand because the level of mercury toxicity in salt from those regions is the lowest). The above collection is referred to as a Cave Man Diet. I tell all of my patients, “If it wasn’t here 10,000 years ago, don’t eat it!” That rule alone will keep most people healthy. Another general rule of thumb is that the longer anything lasts on the shelf, the worse it is for you! Other products that will assist in overcoming Candida overgrowth: • Raw goat’s milk and raw goat’s milk cheese. They have a very high quantity of friendly bacteria and have been found to be the closest to friendly bacteria in the human intestinal tract. If you tolerate raw goat’s milk products, then enjoy them. • Olive leaf extract. • Malic acid • Caprylic acid • Pau d’ Arco extract and/or tea • Oil of caster beans • Garlic • Carrot juice • Tea tree oil • Neem oil (topical application only) I recommend you consult a CHEK HLC 2, or HLC 3 or a good naturopathic physician for guidance on the doses of these products before shotgunning them!

Many factors often lead to Candida problems. These also need to be discussed; and probably managed by a good natural physician. For example, those that suffer Candida albicans infection commonly have a history of antibiotic use, which kills all the friendly bacteria, but does nothing to fungi; allowing any existing fungi family in your intestinal tract to take over. If you have EVER taken antibiotics without going through a recolonization process, recolonization is the first step. The goats milk products mentioned above are very helpful, but a super high quality human grade probiotic supplement is likely to be needed to restore balance to the gut flora. The birth control pill is another common problem that facilitates Candida overgrowth. This effect is linked to estrogen and progesterone’s influence over yeast production (This proposition comes from the fact that females have a noticeably higher incidence of Candida albicans infection than men). I personally put all such patients on a four-day food rotation diet plan as well as using a comprehensive blood test for food allergies. The goal is to remove any source of inflammation in the gut. When there is inflammation in the small intestine, for any reason, the likelihood of having what is called “leaky gut syndrome” goes up dramatically. The most common causes of leaky gut syndrome, which allow the Candida to leak into general circulation, are: • Stress • Alcohol consumption • Medical drug use A CHEK Holistic Lifestyle Coach level 2 or 3 is a good starting point to refer a client whom you suspect might have Candida issues that are

Worms: Our Immune System’s (New) Best Friends
Nicole DeVaney 801-915-4103
By Jenni Westerfeld We have all been taught that our bodies are made up of trillions of cells, each with its own unique makeup and function. But did you know that most of those cells are not the product of our own genetic code? They are microbial cells residing within the environment of the human body, and they outnumber our human cells tenfold. There is no need to panic, however. As scientists are discovering, many of these “bugs” are not harmful at all, but provide valuable assistance to many vital functions. They are called “commensal” bacteria, meaning that they coexist with humans without causing harm. We start to accumulate our small friends from an early age. Although the amniotic sac is sterile, as soon as it breaks and we begin our journey through the birth canal, we pick up commensal cells from our mothers. Later, through exposure to the world via pets, family members, and the physical environment we crawl upon and put in our mouths as infants, we are gathering even more of these bacteria. These new inhabitants take up residence in a part of the body that suits their unique needs, and generally they provide significant benefit to their host. As it turns out, recent studies show that children who grow up with dogs tend to have fewer respiratory infections than those children who do not. Another study showed that Amish and Swiss children who grew up on farms, helping with chores such as caring for pigs and milking cows, riding horses and consuming mostly raw milk were much less vulnerable to allergic reactions both respiratory and dermal. Other studies have linked exposure to our “dirty” natural world to be inversely correlated to a prevalence of allergies and auto-immune disorders. All of these discoveries jive with the development of the “Hygiene Hypothesis.” This hypothesis, originally proposed in 1989 by David P. Strachan at St. George’s Hospital Medical School in London, postulates that without early exposure to many antigens, as is the case in our modern antiseptic world, certain T-cells, or white blood cells, do not get the “education,” or stimulation required to distinguish between self and non-self cells, thereby launching attacks on the

About
My life is about movement. Dance and yoga were my reasons for living. In 2005 I was diagnosed with spondilolisthesis. The diagnoses was just a name to a pain that I had been feeling in my lower back for years. According to the medical professionals I needed spinal surgery to properly function. I was surprised that such a condition could happen to me. I was young, ate all the right organic foods (or so I thought), and did yoga daily. I asked the universe for help and that is when I began working with my first Chek practitioner. Within weeks my back was pain free for the first time in years. My understanding of what good health was went through a metamorphosis. Today I feel great!

human body’s own tissues while overreacting to antigens. When exposed adequately, T-regulator cells develop to down-regulate immune response in T-cells, helping to prevent autoimmune disorders and allergic responses. We will focus primarily on how this hypothesis relates to inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, and specifically Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. One - two million people in the US are suffering from one of these autoimmune diseases today. Traditional therapy usually involves a combination of steroids and immune suppressants. These all can have devastating side-effects, especially when used long term, and are often limited in their effectiveness. When these methods fail, the last resort is often surgery to remove sections of the small intestine or colon. The incidence of these diseases is far greater in developed nations than in countries where exposure to certain parasites is common. The parasites in question are called helminths, or a worm-like creature generally found in warmer climates. There are many types, some which reside in specific areas of the human body, and several that are predominately hosted by wild or domestic animals. Studies looking at petrified human feces in caves as well as examination of ancient mummies have shown that helminths have inhabited the human gastrointestinal system for many thousands of years. Dr. Joel Weinstock of Tufts Medical Center in Boston has been a leader in the study of helminths and their protective role in immunological diseases. He points to supporting data that demonstrated that Ethiopians infected with hookworm had a lower incidence of asthma, as borne out by an additional study carried out in Vietnam. Conversely, Gabonese children who were treated for their helminth infestations became susceptible to dust-mite allergy. Another study showed that an increase in frequency of multiple sclerosis, another autoimmune disease, correlated with a decrease in helminth exposure in developed nations. When multiple sclerosis patients were infected with helminths, they demonstrated fewer flare-ups and fewer new lesions, as shown on MRI, compared with a control group of uninfected patients. Some promising results have been seen in autism patients as well. These are just a few examples of research that has been carried out clearly linking helminth exposure with a reduction in autoimmune and allergic pathologies. Dr. Weinstock has chosen to focus his studies on finding a treatment for Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis through the introduction of helminths into the gastrointestinal tract. After prior testing on rodents, studies are now commencing on humans. Weinstock points out that some helminths are uniquely adapted to a relationship with its given host, a relationship that has evolved over thousands of years of coexistence. The worms have adapted by developing some protective mechanisms so as to survive in a potentially hostile environment. In protecting themselves, the helminths have also caused

a dampening action on some of our immune responses, which benefits us. Humans are also exposed to other worms particular to animals; through hunting, farming and other forms of domestication. Most of these worms do not colonize within the human host, and several do not pose any threat to our health. It is by utilizing one of these worms, specifically Trichuris suis, a type of pig whipworm, that human studies are showing significant remission in Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis symptoms. Because the natural host of T. suis is the pig, it cannot survive for long in a human, nor can it reproduce. It does not leave the gut to infect other parts of the body or transfer to a secondary host.
How does it work? First of all, the ova, or eggs of T.suis are consumed orally in a briny solution. They are microscopic and have a hard shell that resists stomach acids. They attach to the mucosa, or mucous membrane, between the small and the large intestine. There, they hatch and release various substances which trigger immunological responses. The tiny larvae move into wrinkles, called crypts in the mucosa of the colon, wiggling around and stimulating blood circulation in the membranes. After about 2 weeks, any viable larvae have died off, and become digested like a protein. During a course of treatment, the dosage is repeated every 2 weeks for 20-24 weeks. Treatment can be repeated as needed to maintain a balanced immune system. The worms balance an overactive immune system in several ways. The presence of the larvae stimulates mucous production, which forms a barrier to the lining of the gut, protecting it from inflammation. The helminths also release
several chemicals that produce a T-cell regulating response so that an anti-inflammatory environment is created. These actions are probably the most significant, as they allow the T-regulators to regain their influence over the rampant inflammation produced by T-1 and T-2 cells by limiting function of the dendritic cells and macrophages that “present” the antigens to the T-cells. Helminths produce other immune-regulating substances as well, all in an effort to survive in the environment of the human gut. In doing so, they minimize the symptoms of an over reactive immune system and provide relief to us humans. While protecting their existence, they also protect their host. Although treatment is already available in other parts of the world, the FDA has only recently approved T.suis studies in the US. It is the first time the agency has granted approval for whole organism therapy. A spokesperson for the FDA was even quoted as saying “The FDA does recognize the potential importance of alternative therapies, including certain intestinal worms.” Sometimes we must look backward to find the way forward.
