Reduced matrix elements of spin-spin interactions for the atomic f-electron configurations Y.Y. Yeung Department of Science and Environmental Studies Hong Kong Institute of Education, HONG KONG Abstract A re-examination of some major references on the intra-atomic magnetic interactions over the last six decades reveals that there exist some gaps or puzzles concerning the previous studies of the spin-spin interactions for the atomic f-shell electrons. Hence, tables are provided for the relevant reduced matrix elements of the four double-tensor operators zr (r = 1, 2, 3, and 4) of rank 2 in both the orbital and spin spaces. The range of the tables covers all states of the configurations from f 4 to f 7. Keywords: Spin-spin interaction, atomic theory, optical spectroscopy, f-shell electrons

Introduction For the theoretical understanding of the complex spectra of f-shell electrons (including lanthanide and actinide ions), Racah [1-4] introduced the famous tensor operator techniques to parametrize the prominent electrostatic and spin-orbit interactions. Since the mid 1960’s to early 2000, Judd and his co-workers [5-16] conducted a series of group-theoretical formulations and reformulations of inter-configuration interactions (in the form of three-electron effective operators, ti) and several kinds of intra-atomic magnetic interactions (i.e. spin-spin HSS, spin-other-orbit HSOO and electrostatically-correlated spin-orbit HEL-SO interactions) for f-shell electrons. These led to a substantial refinement in modeling and parametrizing the atomic spectra of f electrons and became the standard terms [17-21] for fitting the energy levels of these systems. In the 1980’s, the concept of orthogonal scalar operators [10-11] was extensively applied to the six three-electron operators ti (with associated parameters Ti where i = 2 .. 8, excluding 5) and extended to include another eight three-electron operators ti (where i = 11 .. 19, excluding 13) for the third-order effects. In 1994, Judd and Lo [13] reported the corrections in some reduced matrix elements (RME) of those operators near the middle of the f-shell series because of an error found in the coefficients of fractional parentage (CFP) used in their research team. However, a similar kind of correction was not reported for the RME of the above-mentioned magnetic interaction operators. The complete set of RME for those operators of all f-shell configurations were released by Hansen, Judd and Crosswhite [14] in 1996. Recently, Chen et al. [21] also reported several errors in the widely used RME computer files for the HSOO and HEL-SO operators for the f 2 to f 7configurations. On the other hand, a parallel treatment of the corresponding operators of those magnetic interactions was introduced into the 3dN shell by Judd [22] in 1967 and by Pasternak and Goldschmidt [23] in 1972 and later a complete set of RME were given by Hansen and Judd [24-25] for all the relevant operators in the d2 and d3 configurations when they applied the orthogonal operator formalism in the d-shell configuration. For the p-shell configuration, Glass [26] identified some errors in the previous treatment of the matrix elements of the HSS and HSOO Hamiltonian and confirmed the correct expression given by Hoire [27].

2.

Operators and the gaps in usage Judd and his co-workers[6-8] expressed the intra-atomic magnetic interactions in terms of the scalar components of a set of double-tensor operators, zr , which have rank t in both the orbital and spin spaces. Between two J-multiplet states of f N, their matrix elements can be written as a product of a 6-j symbol and a RME for states ψ and ψ’ which are taken as abbreviations for the sets of quantum numbers (γSL) and (γ’S’L’) used in Nielson and Koster’s notation [28-30]: 2 atomicdata2012yyyeung2main.doc

in which they both possess the rank t = 1. The parameters ar can be written as linear combinations of the Marvin integrals [31-32] M k and the Pk parameters (defined in Ref. [7]). For actual use and calculation of the spin-spin matrix elements, there are several gaps or issues found in the literature as follows: 2.1. Definition of operators When fitting the atomic energy levels, many researchers [17-22, 33-35] usually express the Hamiltonian matrices for HSOO and HSS in terms of the Marvin integrals M k and their associated operators mk , while the matrices for the HEL-SO Hamiltonian are given in terms of the Pk parameters and their associated operators pk. On comparing Eqs. (3), (4) and (5), the operators pk can be well-defined in terms of the operators zr but special attention should be paid to the operators mk. The latter operators should first be separated into the spin-spin and spin-other-orbit components, i.e.

mk  mkSS  mkSOO but their RME must not be added together numerically before using Eq. (1) because those two components have different rank t for their constituent operators zr. For the spin-spin component, we have: m0SS  43 z1 1 m2SS  105 ( 112 z1  9 z2  1,560z3  4,095z4 )

For the spin-other-orbit component [7-8], its operators mkSOO can be expressed as another linear combination [36] of rank one operators zr where r = 5, 6, .. 14. Therefore, 3 atomicdata2012yyyeung2main.doc

the first gap is that many researchers [16-21, 33-34] might have overlooked the above issue when fitting those parameters to the observed energy levels and then this causes some problems in their fitted value of M k because of the gap described in Subsection 2.3 below. 2.2. Omission of spin-spin interaction Around 1968-1970, a number of researchers [7-9, 37-39] worked out and published the RME of zr (i.e. right-most term of Eq.(1)) for all operators (r = 0 to 14) of the f 2 and f 3configurations, and those for HSOO + HEL-SO (i.e. r = 5 to 11, and c) of the f 4 and f 5 configurations. In 1969, Donlan [40] claimed that he had calculated the spin-spin and spin-other-orbit matrices for the f N configurations by using his calculated values of the two particle CFP but none of his tables or computer data files are available to the academic community (see also Ref.[35]). On the other hand, Hannah Crosswhite worked out the numerical values of operators mkSOO and pk for all f N configurations (where N = 2 to 7) in her FORTRAN computer program and they are now included in the “fnmp.dat” files of the SPECTRA program [20-21, 41] in the Argonne National Laboratory and in the “fncross” files as included in M.F. Reid’s fitting programme [42] at the University of Christchurch. Barnes et al. [39] calculated the matrix elements for the spin-spin operators in the f 4 configuration for different J-multipets of mkSS , whilst Armstrong and Taylor [37] obtained the RME of the corresponding operators zr (with r = 0 to 4). Even though Malli and Saxena [43-44] calculated the spin-spin splitting factors for different f N configurations, yet their values correspond only to the diagonal components of the RME of the mkSS operators. In 1993, Rahman [45] produced the RME of both mkSS and mkSOO operators

for the f 2 configuration only. Therefore,

another gap is that no complete list of RME for the spin-spin operators zr (with r = 1 to 4) of any f N configurations can be found in the literature, nor are these available from any data files in the public domain. 2.3. Significance of spin-spin interaction in lanthanide spectroscopy For the previous fittings of free-ion and crystal field parameters to the observed energy levels of the lanthanide or actinide series, as performed by Hannah Crosswhite and her co-workers [46-47], it is now verified [36] from their fitted values of free-ion parameters that the spin-spin component was absent from the fitting in the LaCl3:Ho3+ system [46] despite of its presence in the LaCl3:Nd3+ case [47]. because they possessed the RME of the spin-spin operators only up to the f 3 configuration. Besides, it is also checked that Crosswhite’s offspring fitting programs, i.e. Reid’s version and the SPECTRA program both do not use the RME of the spin-spin operators. Their operators mk are simply set to be mkSOO and their given reasons are that: (a) the effects of spin-spin interaction are rather small, and (b) those effects could be effectively absorbed in the operators for the spin-other-orbit interaction. For another fitting program called ATOME as independently developed by Denis Garcia and Michele Faucher [48-49] in the late 1980’s, the spin-spin interaction Hamiltonian was absent right from its earliest version despite of the subsequent addition [33] of the HSOO and HEL-SO Hamiltonian in the early 2000’s. This is the third and most severe gap because the spin-spin interaction can lead to quite significant shifts in the calculated energy levels [36], e.g., by 20-30 cm-1 in 3P0,1 multiplets of Cs2NaLnCl6:Tm3+, up to around 10 cm-1 in various 4IJ and 4GJ multiplets of LaCl3:Nd3+ and around 25 cm-1 in the 5I4 multiplets of LaCl3:Ho3+. Those shifts are comparable with the effects (around 10-30 cm-1) of the correlation crystal field [35, 50-51] or the configuration-interaction assisted crystal field [33] (i.e., configuration interaction of the f-shell with a charge transfer configuration) and so the inclusion of the spin-spin interaction Hamiltonian will likely cause a substantial change in the fitted values of those parameters concerned. Besides, the effect of this HSS Hamiltonian cannot be absorbed by simply adjusting the values of the M k parameters because of the gap mentioned in Subsection 2.1 above, i.e., the matrix elements of HSOO and HSS are orthogonal [36] to each other due to the different rank t used in Eq. (1) and so they vary independently for different energy levels. In view of the above 3 kinds of gap, the RME of the spin-spin operators are calculated in the next Section for the f 4 to f 7 configurations. Three ways of checking the calculated values are also presented. 3.

Reduced matrix elements Since Judd and Wadzinski [6] have presented the RME of the operators zr (with r = 1 to 4) through the decomposition of the spin-spin interaction for the f 2 configuration, those for other f N configurations can be calculated by successive application of the following formula [7]:  f N || zr || f N ' 

where ( {| ) and ( ' {| ' ) are the CFP given in Nielson and Koster’s book [28], t = 2, [S, S’, ..]≡(2S+1)∙(2S’+1).. and   S  L  S ' L'7 / 2 . The terms in the RHS of Eq. (7) should be summed over all possible parent states  and  ' of f N-1. Dating from the late 1980’s, the present author has independently developed computer programs [51-53] to calculate the energy levels and state vectors for any f-shell or d-shell ion. The relevant 6j symbol subroutine and CFP files for evaluation of the atomic spectra have been employed for the present double precision (i.e. up to 14 significant figures) calculations. In Table 1, the results of calculation are presented with the precision of six decimal points. Since the spin-spin operators are diagonal with respect to seniority number [27] and the selection rules [6]: |L-L’|≤2 and |S-S’|≤2 apply, those zero RME are not listed. Besides, the 6-j symbol in (1) imposes additional constraint that 2≤ L+L’ and 2≤ S+S’, leading to zero matrix elements between states of S, S’ = 0 or 1/2, i.e. no spin-spin effect on those low spin states. The formula has also been used for operators in HSOO + HEL-SO (with r = 5 to 11, and c) when we put t = 1. Our calculated values of those latter operators for f 3 to f 7 configurations all agree [36] with those of the “fncross” files given by M.F. Reid’s fitting programme [42] up to 10-6 as the RME are listed out with six decimal points. Since there is no complete list of computer files for the RME of the spin-spin operators, it is necessary to verify our calculated results through the following 3 alternative ways: 3.1. Comparison with literature values For the f 3 shell, the RME of the operators zr (with r = 0 to 11, and c) and the matrix elements of the operators mkSS were given in Refs. [8] and [38], respectively. By using Eq. (1) together with Eq. (6), the present calculated values may be compared with those given in Ref. [38]. By random sampling of around two dozen RME for manual comparison, no discrepancy could be found between the various sources of values (apart from a sign correction for z4 between states 4I and 2H(2) in Ref. [8]). For the f 4 shell, the RME of the operators zr (with r = 0 to 4) and the matrix elements of the operators mkSS were given in Refs. [37] and [39], respectively. Using Eq.(6) and the same method of checking, the present calculated values agree with those given in Ref. [39] but both sets of values are greater than those given in Ref. [37] by an exact factor of 4. For other configurations like f 5 to f 7, only the splitting factors are available [7, 6 atomicdata2012yyyeung2main.doc

43-44] and they are related to the diagonal matrix elements of the operators mkSS . Again, no discrepancy was found after undergoing some manual checking. 3.2. Symmetry between conjugate configurations For a given f N configuration, its RME for every operator zr (with r = 0 to 11, and c) is identical with the corresponding one in the conjugate configuration f 1 4 -N. On the other hand, the Eq. (7) can be successively applied for N up to 13 if we derive the CFP for the more than half-filled configuration from the relevant relation in Ref. [28] (with a corrected phase factor ζ = (-1)(ν’-1)/2 where ν a seniority number), or Eq. (2-22) in Ref. [30]. It is confirmed that the pairwise comparison of corresponding RME for f 2 to f 6 (matching with f 1 2 to f 8 ) by the computer agrees up to an accuracy of 10-13 or better. All of the RME of the f 1 3 shell are calculated to be zero as expected. Even though there is no direct symmetry check for the f 7 configuration, it is noted that any errors in its RME will propagate to the RME of f 8 or higher configurations because of the Eq. (7). 3.3. Orthogonality relationship For the d-shell, the corresponding nine operators zr have been shown by Hansen and Judd [25] to be orthogonal operators. However, a similar examination was performed only for the three-electron operators [10-11], ti , in the f-shell configurations. where Tr is the trace operation which sums over all the diagonal matrix elements and [J]=2J+1 accounts for the multiplicity in each J-multiplet. The relationship (8) was confirmed for the RME of all r and all N and the normalization factors were also verified to follow the relationship: (14  2n )! where n = 2 is the number of electrons involved in the operator concerned. Exact values of Fr(2) are given in Table 2 together with irreducible representations of those operators in the SO7 and G2 groups. Eq. (9) is a modification of the corresponding formula for any n-electron operator in the d-shell as given by Judd and Leavitt [54]. The Eqs. (8) and (9) form an acid test on the reliability of the calculated results. It is also noted [36] that operators mkSS are not orthogonal to each other as can be easily seen from relation (6).
