Welcome to the 2017 Audemars Piguet QEII Cup to be held on Sunday 30th April. A captivating edition of the HK$20 million Group 1 Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup (2000m) is set to feature nine contenders from five international jurisdictions, with last year’s champion facing a clutch of rising stars. Werther was an emphatic winner from top-class rivals in 2016 and will line up once again: this time the challengers will include one of Japan’s smartest talents, Neorealism, as well as the classic-placed Dicton from France, Mubtaahij from the UAE, Australia’s The United States and one of Hong Kong’s new poster boys, Pakistan Star. In the FORM GUIDE, the PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS table provides you with a bird-eye's view of the race. This at-a-glance guide gives you a full form summary of the horses in a simple and concise table. Another handy tool is the INTERNATIONAL RATINGS CHART. In weight-for-age races like the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup, generally speaking, the higher a horse's rating, which is based on racing performance, the better its chance to win. A preliminary SPEED CHART has been included to assist in identifying likely positions in running. Audemars Piguet QEII Cup (43rd running) History The Queen Elizabeth II Cup was first run at Happy Valley in 1975 during the Hong Kong visit of British monarch Queen Elizabeth II, who was on hand to present the winner’s trophy. In 1995 it became an international event with overseas runners invited to participate. The race distance has been changed from 2200m to 2000m since 1997. Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet became the race sponsor of this premier 2000m contest in 1999 when the race was promoted to G2 status, and the race was then elevated to its existing G1 status in 2001. The race’s prize money increased from HK$14 million to HK$20 million in 2015, nearly quadruple the purse of HK$5.35 million offered in 1999. As one of the World’s Top 100 G1 races, the G1 Audemars Piguet QEII Cup has attracted participation from many high-class international runners down the years. After the APQEII Cup became an international event in 1995, three overseas horses have achieved a notable double in Hong Kong – winning at December’s Hong Kong International Races and then adding the APQEII Cup, in the same Hong Kong season. That trio consists of 1995 winner Red Bishop who previously won the 1994 Hong Kong International Vase, 1999 winner Jim And Tonic who succeeded in the 1998 Hong Kong International Bowl, and 2002 winner Eishin Preston who triumphed in the 2001 Hong Kong Mile.

Age: 49. Gianluca Bietolini comes from a prominent racing family, with his father Luciano a trainer and jockey and his brother Gabriele also a rider. He began as an amateur rider, winning over 100 races and started his training career early, managing 20 horses from the age of 17. Based initially in Rome, his Italian career highlight came with jumper Suzhi winning the G1 Gran Corsa Siepi de Roma Steeplechase in 2012. He also received support from prominent American owner-breeder Kenneth Ramsey, winning stakes races with Kitten’s Joy progeny such as subsequent American G1 winner Real Solution, as well as Steaming Kitten and Kitten On The Run. In 2015, he shifted his base to Maisons-Laffitte in France, where he had already established a small satellite string a couple of years earlier. This move proved fruitful when he won the G3 Prix de Fontainebleau with Dicton, who would later go on to place in two French classics – the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains behind The Gurkha and the G1 Prix du Jockey Club behind Almanzor.

Age: 60. Tony Cruz is a son of Johnny Cruz, a renowned rider from Hong Kong’s amateur era. His brother, Derek Cruz, is also a trainer. He was among the first intake of apprentices to the HKJC Apprentice Jockeys’ School when that facility opened in 1972. Cruz started his riding career in the 1973/74 season. He went on to be Hong Kong's champion jockey six times and rode 946 winners. He also made his name at G1 level in Europe and notably partnered the great race mare Triptych. He was granted a Hong Kong trainer’s licence in 1996 and first landed the trainers' title in 1999/2000. In 2005 he set a then record for a season's winners (91) and earnings (HK$113m). Cruz trained the great Hong Kong champion Silent Witness to win 17 consecutive races before tasting defeat. Age: 55. Mike de Kock won his first G1 just four months into his training career in 1989. He has won every major in South Africa at least once and trained the South African Triple Crown winner, Horse Chestnut, as well as the crack mares Ipi Tombe and Igugu. He has enjoyed considerable success at the Dubai World Cup Carnival winning the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic, the G1 Al Quoz Sprint the UAE Derby six times, and both the G1 Dubai Duty Free and the G2 Godolphin Mile twice. He is also a force when he heads to Hong Kong, winning the APQEII Cup with Irridescence (2006) and Archipenko (2008), the 2008 Hong Kong Cup with Eagle Mountain and the 2014 Champions Mile with Variety Club. He already has two G1 wins on the board this year thanks to Orchid Island in the SA Fillies’ Classic and Heavenly Blue in the SA Classic. Hickmott, Robert

Age: 48. Robert Hickmott was born into a racing family, with his father John a trainer in South Australia. He first made his name as an Australian Rules footballer, playing two games for the Melbourne Demons in the Australian Football League (AFL) in 1990. Hickmott then moved into the family business, learning the craft of training from father John before stints with G1-winning handlers Colin Little, Tony Vasil and Alan Bailey. In 2001, he joined the Macedon Lodge stables of owner Lloyd Williams, first as stable foreman, then as assistant to trainer John Sadler, before he was officially named as head trainer in 2009. He has prepared no less than 12 Group 1 winners, including two Melbourne Cups with Green Moon in 2012 and Almandin in 2016, as well as a Caulfield Cup with Fawkner in 2013. The United States will be Hickmott’s first runner outside Australia. Age: 49. Noriyuki Hori obtained his JRA trainer license in 2002. He was the JRA trainer with the best winning percentage record in 2011 and repeated that feat in 2015 when he also claimed his first JRA champion trainer title. He has a career total 462 wins, with 11 so far this season (at 11 April). He enjoyed his most successful year in 2015, with Duramente bringing him his first classic win in the G1 Japanese 2,000 Guineas and then following up in the G1 Japanese Derby, while his mile champion Maurice excelled in the G1 Yasuda Kinen, G1 Mile Championship and the G1 Hong Kong Mile. Age: 67. Background: John Moore has been involved in Hong Kong racing since the professional era commenced in 1971 and is Hong Kong's longest-serving and winning-most trainer. A former amateur jockey, he began training in 1985, before which he was assistant trainer to his late famous father, George. In 2007 he prepared an international G1 double thanks to Viva Pataca in the APQEII Cup and Able One in the Champions Mile and, in a feat perhaps unprecedented in the sport, won the same two races with the same two horses three years later. Moore was the first to reach 1000 wins in Hong Kong and has been the leading prize money earner for the past 10 seasons. Age: 49. HKJC Apprentice Jockeys’ School graduate Dennis Yip was licensed as a jockey in Hong Kong between 1984 and 1993. He rode a total of 59 winners before moving on to learn the training game overseas and then acting as assistant to multiple champion trainer, Brian Kan. In 2002/03 he became a licensed trainer in his own right. Yip has trained more than 30 winners in each season of his 13-year training career. The 2011/12 season saw him reach the 50-win mark and fourth in the trainers' premiership. In 2012/13 as he sent out 69 winners to clinch his first trainers' title, sealing victory over Tony Cruz in the very last race of the season. That term, All You Wish took Champion Griffin honours and the Most Improved Horse title. Berry, Tommy Age: 26. Tommy Berry grew up around horses at the Warwick Farm stable of his father Kevin Berry, a former jockey. Berry began his career in 2007 and was Sydney champion apprentice in 2009/10. After a spell as stable jockey to Gai Waterhouse from April, 2011, he turned freelance in early 2015. His first short-term contract with the Hong Kong Jockey Club ran from 28 April, 2013 until that season's end and yielded 22 wins. Callan, Neil Age: 38. Irishman Neil Callan finished runner-up in the UK jockeys’ championship in 2005 (151 wins) and 2007 (170 wins). After a fruitless start as an apprentice in Ireland with Kevin Prendergast he moved to Britain and was named UK champion apprentice in 1999, having forged successful partnerships with trainers Karl Burke, Kevin Ryan and Michael Jarvis. His first short-term Hong Kong contract came in the 2010/11 season and he has since established a reputation as a tough competitor. His first full Hong Kong season, 2014/15, yielded 47 wins and fifth place in the jockeys’ premiership, while he once again finished fifth in the championship with 40 wins in 2015/16. Clipperton, Sam Age: 23. Sam Clipperton is one Australia’s rising stars and has enjoyed success with the elite Godolphin operation, for which he has ridden five G2 wins. He competed in showjumping and eventing and also some rodeo in his youth before discovering horse racing as a teenager. He left school at 15 and joined the stable of eight-time Sydney champion jockey and Hall of Famer Ron Quinton. Clipperton made his race-riding debut aboard Nine Dragons at Wyong on 16 July, 2010. His breakthrough came the following season in which he notched 23 wins. In 2014 he became the first rider since Bobby El-Issa 20 years earlier to win the Sydney apprentice title twice in succession. His best season to date came in 2014/15 as he racked up 81 wins. He notched a first G1 win in March, 2016 atop Peeping in the Coolmore Classic for his old boss and mentor Quinton, who also guided Hugh Bowman’s early career. He made it two G1 wins a month later aboard English in the All-Aged Stakes. He partnered his first four-timer at Rosehill on 19 December, 2015. de Sousa, Silvestre Age: 36. One of 10 children, Brazilian ace Silvestre de Sousa first sat on a horse at age 18 and within two years he was champion apprentice in Sao Paulo. He moved to Europe at age 22 and was employed as a work rider for Dermot Weld. In 2004, dispirited after two years without a ride in public, De Sousa moved to England and teamed up with North Yorkshire trainer Dandy Nicholls. His first UK win was achieved aboard Sonic Anthem at Southwell on 1 January, 2006. Riding mainly for lesser trainers, often on longshots, he established his reputation on the northern circuit and in 2010 he rode his first century. With trainer Mark Johnston’s support he finished runner-up in the 2011 UK champion jockey race. He was retained by Godolphin from 2012 to 2014, during which time his haul included the G1 Dubai World Cup on African Story. Riding freelance in 2015, he notched 132 wins to claim the UK champion jockey title. De Sousa notched an admirable 16 winners in each of his two short winter stints in Hong Kong (2015/16 and 2016/17). Marcus, Anton Age: 46. Anton Marcus is the younger brother of former Hong Kong champion jockey Basil, and is one of South Africa’s leading jockeys over the last two decades. Marcus also rode in Hong Kong and amassed a total of 144 winners in six racing seasons. He has been champion jockey in South Africa five times (1999/00, 2007/08, 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12) and is one of only three riders to have won the Durban July, his country’s most famous handicap, four times (1993, 2000, 2005 and 2007). Four times France’s champion jockey (1996, 1997, 1999, 2000), Olivier Peslier is among the world’s best jockeys of the past 25 years, with a host of major wins around the globe, more than 100 at G1 level. He has seven LONGINES HKIR wins: Docksider (1999) and Hat Trick (2005) in the Mile, Patripal (1995), Borgia (1999) and Doctor Dino (2007 & 2008) in the Vase, and Vision D’Etat (2009) in the Cup. Prebble, Brett Age: 39. Brett Prebble left Australia for Hong Kong in 2002 with two Melbourne premierships to his name. He collected a first major win at Sha Tin aboard Precision in the 2003 Champions & Chater Cup. He has since partnered to victory Hong Kong stars such as Bullish Luck, Sacred Kingdom, Cape Of Good Hope and Lucky Nine. His past tussles with Douglas Whyte for the jockeys’ championship are legendary, although he has not yet lifted the crown. Prebble was runner-up six times to his rival, his 2009/10 battle with Whyte especially epic as he lost out by one, the final score being 100-99. He set a Hong Kong record, since surpassed, of most wins in a day with his six-timer at Happy Valley on 20 June, 2010. His career highlight is Green Moon’s win in the 2012 Melbourne Cup. He raced to the then fastest ever 50 in Hong Kong history that season and became the second rider, after Whyte, to notch 100 wins in a season. He had finished runner-up in 2011/12 and 2012/13. Purton lost his title when second to Joao Moreira in 2014/15 with 95 wins and was runner-up again in 2015/16 with 80 wins, 88 behind Moreira and 33 clear of third place. He started his career in Brisbane where he was an apprentice sensation, winning the champion jockey title while still a claimer, and then moved on to Sydney where he was twice second in the premiership behind perennial champion Darren Beadman. Rawiller, Nash Age: 42. Nash Rawiller is a three-time champion in Sydney and has more than 50 G1 victories to his credit. Rawiller’s brother, Brad, is a jockey and sister, Stacey, used to be; another brother, Todd, is a trainer and their father, Keith, was a jump jockey. Rawiller started his career in Victoria and early success at the elite level came on Elvstroem. Teetan, Karis Age: 26. Mauritian rider Karis Teetan was in the top 10 of the South African Jockeys' Championship when he left for Hong Kong in August, 2013. He entered the South African National Jockey Academy at the age of 14 and was champion South African apprentice in 2008. He graduated in 2009 with 147 wins to his credit and passed the 100-win mark in every season as a senior jockey in South Africa. He has recorded five Group 1 wins, with his inaugural success at the top level being in his native Mauritius on 24 November, 2008, aboard Halo Hunter. Teetan represented South Africa in the 2012 International Jockeys' Invitational in Seoul, Korea and in the 2008 Macau Apprentice Jockeys Invitation Races. He notched an impressive 50 wins in his first Hong Kong season, finishing equal-third in his third season in 2015/16. He started the 2016/17 season with international wins on Super Jockey in the Korea Sprint and Lim’s Cruiser in the EW Barker Trophy in Singapore. Whyte, Douglas Age: 45. Douglas Whyte was born in Durban, South Africa, hence his nickname “The Durban Demon”. He was champion jockey in Hong Kong for 13 consecutive seasons, losing his title to Zac Purton in 2013/14. Whyte first sat on a horse at age two and developed his skills riding in the countryside with his late father, himself a former jockey. He is a graduate of the South African Jockey Academy. In 1996 he rode weekends in Singapore and Malaysia and undertook a short contract in Hong Kong in the winter of the 1996/97 season. He returned that spring for a breakthrough APQEII Cup win on South African champion London News. Whyte moved to Hong Kong for the 1997/98 season and made the city his home. He is the only jockey ever to reach 1,000 wins in Hong Kong, and his tally of 114 wins in 2005/06 stood as a record until Joao Moreira surpassed it in 2014/15. Selling will be temporarily suspended at the start of each race, and will resume after the Weighed in Signal is displayed. 

Jockeys participating in the nominated races in a race meeting will be numbered as 1 to 14. Nos. 1 to 13 (Named Jockey) will be assigned to one jockey each, while No. 14 (Others) will include the rest of the jockeys for the race meeting.



Jockeys riding the first three placed horses on their Scheduled Rides will earn Jockey Challenge Points – 12, 6 and 4 points respectively. Scheduled Rides means the rides that a jockey is engaged to ride in the nominated races at a race meeting at the start selling of Jockey Challenge.



Jockey Challenge Points scored by Substitute Jockeys will not count.



At the end of a race meeting, the jockey with the highest accumulated Jockey Challenge Points will be declared as the winner. The Jockey Challenge Points for all jockeys (including jockeys in No. 14) will be counted on an individual basis.



The “countback” rule will be used as a tie-breaker should two or more jockeys collect the same number of Jockey Challenge Points on their Scheduled Rides.
