Free safety workshops for commercial vessels The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is hosting free workshops in Tasmania to assist commercial vessel owners, particularly commercial fishers, to understand future regulatory changes. Vessel owners will be guided by staff from AMSA to develop safety management systems. The workshops are designed to help operators identify and manage risks with the operation of a domestic commercial vessel. Operators will learn how to develop a simple but effective safety management system that is compliant with new standards. AMSA General Manager Domestic Vessels Mal Larsen said the workshops will provide vessel operators and their crews with the information they need to create a safety management system that works for their vessel and their business. “We can help operators understand what’s required of them under the national standard for commercial vessels and help create a safety management system in a no-nonsense way,” Mr Larsen said. “The workshops are a great opportunity for vessel owners to work together and share knowledge in an informal setting, with support from AMSA,” he said. AMSA is working closely with operators in the domestic commercial vessel industry to enhance marine safety. In addition to the workshops, AMSA and marine safety agencies in each state and territory provide guidance materials and work with operators to test parts of their safety management systems and understand what they need to do to make them effective.
