• Does competency critical for patient’s outcomes • Objectives of professional credentialing • State of Clinical Engineering certification • Global survey of CE BOK, BOP, & certification programs • Role of IFMBE/CED in global professional BOK, BOP, & credentialing
Does competency critical for patient’s outcomes • Health care industry is critically dependent on technology for the delivery of its services • Health care technology has the potential to impact care outcomes including life and death decisions • Profession (Latin = public declaration) requires specialized knowledge and intensive academic training. • The health care team consists of learned professionals who demonstrate their competencies through credentialing programs based on BOK • Clinical engineers as members of the team should be subject to the same requirements for demonstration of competency and knowledge of their field of practice (BOP)

Better Care outcomes
The State of Clinical Engineering certification
• In 1981 IFMBE initiated a study that recommended common Body-ofknowledge and mutual recognition INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF MEDICAL & BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING A G R E E M E N T on Mutual recognition of qualifications for clinical engineers October, 1981
Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, F.R. Germany, France, G.D.R., Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, U.K., U.S.A.
• IFMBE/Clinical Engineering Division (CED) re-initiated (December 2009) global project regarding the state of C.E. BOK, BOP & certification • In 2014 partial results of the project were published including in the 2017 WHO publication Human Resource for Medical Devices https://www.dropbox.com/s/3tie280kk1sxw8j/17101Human%20resources%20for%20Medical%20Devices%2C%20the%20Role%20of%20Biomedical%20Engineers%20for%20COI%202%20%281%29.pdf?dl=0
Global survey of CE certification programs • Variation of voluntary clinical engineering certification programs (with or without examination) were found in: • USA, Ireland, Czech Republic, Poland, Italy, Sweden, People Republic of China, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, UK, Mexico, and Hong Kong and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia utilize the US program. • USA, Japan, and the People Republic of China have dynamic and growing participation in their respective certification programs. • IFMBE/CED is collecting BOK and BOP data and examining the need for the development of consensus program model of minimum credentialing requirements that promotes harmonization and adoption of common (BOK) competency guidelines that improve care outcomes.
