Outlines • The Current Energy Situation in Libya. • The Renewable Energy Technologies. • The possibility of the electrification of University of Benghazi using Renewable Energy Sources. • The advantages • How to reach our Goal?

The Current Energy Situation in Libya • Libya relies on the oil and the gas for electricity production. • The demand will increase in near future. • More oil and gas consumption → reduction in the country revenue. • Libya should use its Renewable sources Sooner or Later.

Renewable energy Technologies

Solar energy

Wind Energy • The wind rotates the blades of the turbine which is attached to generator.

• Relies on the Photoelectric effect to generate electricity. 12/16/2016

Average solar radiation in Libya is around 7.5 kWh/m2/day with about 3000 to 3500 sunshine hours per year 4

PV Systems • PV system consists of: • Solar Panels, Batteries, DC/DC or DC/AC converters and control unit.

What Renewable Energy will Bring to UOB? • • • • • •

Secure Energy Source. Energy Saving Sustainable Buildings Develop experts in renewable energy. Development of training Contribute to the RE penetration in Libya. • Research and Development. 12/16/2016

9

The Proposed PV and Wind Systems • University of Benghazi has very large unused surface space that can be used for Photovoltaic installation. • Additionally the university has large unused land space. • The roof of the building are very suitable for PV installation. • To generate 1 kW we require around 10 m2. 12/16/2016

10

Example: The Faculty of Engineering Each building could generate around 100 kW, which makes the total generated power around 1.2 MW 1) There is no shading, 2) The PV panels can be easily oriented to face the sun for power maximization, 3) Less wires can be used.

Small Wind Farm. • The unused spaces can be used for installing medium scale wind turbines.

1 MW wind turbine has a diameter of 48 m, the distance between the turbines will be in the range (144 m- 480 m). Rule of thumb: 10 to 15 MW requires around 1 km2 12/16/2016

12

Other Possibilities

Wind farm site selection requires some peculiarities. The most important characteristics of the site are: open land without obstacles, sufficient wind, and a smooth surface area.

How Long Does it Take? • To install 10-50 MW wind farm, it takes from 2 to 6 Months! • A standard wind farm of 20 turbines will extend over an area of about 1 square kilometer.

How Much Does it Cost? • System Planning and Design. • Feasibility Study. • The outcomes of the project. 12/16/2016

reduces the upfront cost project fund opportunities updated for the latest technologies the experience with this new technology will have the enough time to mature

16

Cost? • In simple terms the cost of the system is given by:

17

Difficulties we may face • In developing countries renewable energy is still suspicious! • The system may have a large upfront cost. • The lack of weather data. • Electricity subsidizing.
