Goring Kerr Tek 21 advantages: Detect smaller metal particles

METAL DETECTORS "The ultimate safeguard" Modern high-speed processing equipment in the food and pharmaceutical industries obviously brings the benefit of high productivity. The ever-present danger with machinery, however, is that constant friction between moving parts, vibration and normal wear and tear can cause pieces of metal to break away and fall into the product — such things as shavings, fragments of metal foil, screen or mesh, bolts and molds damaged by metal fatigue. In addition, there is the danger of metal contaminants contained in incoming raw material. Processors do not want these metal fragments to damage machinery, of course, but the primary concern is for the consumer. Responsible manufacturers want to do their utmost to protect customers from the hazards of such contaminants. Today, "doing the utmost" means adding the ultimate safeguard to the processing line: the Tek 21 metal detector.

Increased sensitivity in Tek 21 detectors, achieved through advanced circuitry design and improved components, makes it possible to detect metal particles 10% to 27% smaller than before, depending on their shape and orientation. This results in a substantial increase in protection for the consumer.

Set and forget Tek 21 detectors incorporate highly sophisticated electronic components (developed for NASA) that greatly increase the system's stability. This means that maximum sensitivity is maintained at all times and under all conditions without the need to reset phase and balance.

Automatic Self Balancing Self Balancing circuitry automatically and continuously compensates for any changes in operating conditions. The rate of auto-balance is adjusted to achieve optimum performance at any product speed within a specified range.

Pre-set frequency Operating frequencies are pre-set to minimize product and bulk effect problems.

Narrow Zone Detection This feature provides precise operation of the rejection device to reduce the waste of non-contaminated products.

Performance Monitoring Performance Monitoring circuitry continuously monitors the unit to maintain optimum performance, and an automatic alert signals a malfunction. The reject device may also be monitored by this circuitry.

Memory A Memory Unit accepts pulse input to automatically adjust the timing of the reject device for variable belt speeds.

Longer warranty Confidence in the performance of the Tek 21 series enables Goring Kerr to extend its warranty to two years from one year.

Optional with all Tek 21 detectors:

The "Metal Manager" computer module

The Metal Manager interfaces with a factory computer or can download data to a printer. Metal Manager computer module control panel.

All detector-related operations can be monitored and managed locally from the Metal Manager computer module or from the plant's central computer to which the module can be interfaced. The Metal Manager offers the following advantages:

Integrate with DC/ CIA Monitoring assures that the detector is operating full time and that sensitivity and phase are correctly set for the products being inspected. If required, the Metal Manager can integrate all detector operations within the plant's overall QC/QA program. In addition to recording all detector functions and settings at all times, the Metal Manager records the number cf products rejected, sensitivity, phase, downtime and faults.

99-product program The Metal Manager's memory can store preprogrammed phase and sensitivity settings for up to 99 products that are entered automatically from the plant's computer as each product is processed. Settings can also be keyed in locally as two-digit numbers.

Test records

To monitor quality control test, the detector is placed into TEST MODE and a metal sample is inserted a number of times, in accordance with plant procedures. The Metal Manager records the time of the test, its parameters and results — providing hard copy if desired.

Detection trends Data provided by the Metal Manager can reveal trends in metal contamination. For example, an increased frequency of metal detection incidents after machinery maintenance shutdowns could indicate a need to improve post-maintenance clean-up before resuming production. Trend data are also useful in identifying raw material shipments that may contain unusually large amounts of metal contamination, or in signalling the beginning of a break-up of machinery that contaminates products with metal particles.

Password entry A password entry system in the Metal Manager prevents unauthorized changes of settings.

Legal aid In today's litigious environment, a record of the operation of your metal detector for any period can be of importance in a legal action. Records can be readily obtained with the Metal Manager by downloading data from the detector to a printer, or accessing the data through interface with the plant's computer system.

Self-maintenance To minimize detector downtime, Goring Kerr has designed the Tek 21 so that most servicing can be carried out by plant maintenance personnel. Self-check diagnostics locate faults in individual sections of circuitry which can be replaced in minutes with plug-in universal modules kept in stock or obtained on overnight delivery from Goring Kerr

MODEL SCfor FFS machines Model SC is a compact metal detector system for vertical form, fill and seal machines in the cereal and snack-food 11 industries. Extremely compact models permit easy ' positioning of the detector above the filling yoke of an FFS machine. The control unit can be remote-mounted in any readily accessible location. Model SC is available with the Metal Manager computer module. For detailed information, request Bulletin GDK-163. Model SC

Other Goring Kerr detector models: These special-purpose detectors are not in the Tek 21 series. In their special applications they do, however, have excellent performance capabilities.

MODEL GDK-168 ferrous in foil detector Model GDK-168 provides a high level of sensitivity to ferrous metals for products packaged in aluminum foil, or prepared in aluminum foil plates or trays. The Search Head is extremely stable and requires no calibration adjustments to set up or operate.

MODEL TEK IV The Goring Kerr Tek IV is the first metal detector that individually inspects and automatically phases itself for "conductive" foods such as meat, bread, cheese and dairy products, salads, pizza and pickles. (Conductive foods produce their own signals which can mask the presence of metal.) Tek IV reliably maintains maximum sensitivity at all times, stops the product waste and productiondisruptions of false triggers caused by "conductivity signals" and eliminates the necessity of constantly making manual phase-setting adjustments.

The majority put their trust in Goring Kerr It is significant that in the food industry, where metal detection is most critical, most companies put their trust in Goring Kerr metal detection systems. As a result, Goring Kerr metal detectors have been No. 1 in food industry installations for over 40 years. As a further measure of confidence, Goring Kerr is the only metal detector manufacturer that has been in continuous operation for that period, during which time it has provided uninterrupted and consistent technical Model SC on a FFS machine at The Hostess Frito-Lay Company

leadership in metal detection and the reliable and prompt supply of service and parts. Since its beginning in 1948, Goring Kerr research and development is credited with a series of technological breakthroughs such as the first use of transistors in metal detectors, the development of AutoPhase, Self-Balancing Systems and Narrow Zone Detection - and most recently, the development of Tek 21 detectors and the Metal Manager computer module.
