Leadership Letter

Dear Friends, This has been a year of growth and change for Grand Rapids Community Foundation. We couldn’t be more pleased with our market growth of 12.9 percent. After a few years of slow growth, a change in our fund management company (which was fully implemented at the start of this fiscal year) and its new direction for us has helped grow our assets to $331,762,341. This, along with bequests, the establishment of 33 new funds and generous gifts from annual donors, built our endowment and our confidence. Thank you for your support. Our development efforts and positive financial picture are only part of our story. Our grantmaking and leadership work drive the Community Foundation, and we hope they inspire you too. In this report, you’ll read about a few nonprofits in Kent County and the grants they received. We are confident that these nonprofits are improving people’s lives and helping make the community a place where everyone can learn, live, work and thrive.

Grand Rapids Community Foundation 2016-2017 Annual Report

Leadership Letter

Last year we awarded $13,397,096 in grants and scholarships. We spent significant time in 20162017 working on our strategic direction—determining where we should focus our resources and how we should reach out and best serve our growing community. It was, and continues to be, work that challenges us to think differently.

"We believe that the best way for us to help develop a thriving community is to focus on creating an inclusive economy."

With the input of community members, trustees and staff, and facilitation from the consulting firm FSG, we created our North Star. Standing alongside our mission and vision, the North Star gives us direction for what we are doing now and in the coming years. It reads:

creating an inclusive economy. An inclusive economy is one where opportunity and prosperity are shared regardless of race, gender, class, age, religion, sexual orientation, ability, ethnicity or immigration status.

For West Michigan to grow and prosper, we must make sure that everyone can apply their talents and creativity to fuel our future. It is only by connecting across perspectives and overcoming inequities that we can build and sustain an inclusive economy and thriving community.

One of our first steps is to be more purposeful about including views and opinions of people who have been most harmed by, or who have lived experience with, inequity. If we’re going to be truly successful in following our North Star, we know that participation and authentic community connections are key to our success.

With the groundwork completed (mostly) during late 2016 and early 2017, we’re now working on several action steps to bring our strategy to implementation. We are working to include more community voices in our work and challenging ourselves and others on how to make Grand Rapids a more equitable place for all.

It’s exciting to be leading the Community Foundation in a new direction, and, while our North Star isn’t a change in philosophy or a shift in what we’ve always stood for, it makes clearer to donors, nonprofits and the community where we’re going and what matters most.

While equity is a multifaceted and deeply human issue, we believe that the best way for us to help develop a thriving community is to focus on

DONOR ADVISED FUND

DONOR STORY

Dr. Khan + Mrs. Liza Nedd “I think that any time you can partner with a wellestablished organization that is already doing amazing work, it’s a win-win for everybody. Grand Rapids Community Foundation has been around for a long time, and they are really good at what they do. The Community Foundation is an organization that understands and has the insight to recognize what community giving ought to be and that it ought to also be diverse—and expressly not forget the marginalized parts of society.”

A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is one of the most popular giving options at Grand Rapids Community Foundation. Donors who make significant charitable contributions annually or are considering a private foundation can use a DAF to manage the details of giving with ease and confidence. When you have a DAF at the Community Foundation, you recommend grants and we do the work for you. Like a private foundation, a DAF has a name and will honor your name and philanthropic intentions, now and long into the future.

FUND FOR COMMUNITY GOOD

DONOR STORY

Bill + Mary Ford “Providing educational opportunities has been our main emphasis, but we wanted to support the broad community too, as there are so many worthwhile and important nonprofit groups in Grand Rapids. We felt this could be achieved by supporting Grand Rapids Community Foundation. It can direct gifts where needed better than we could, because it has the research ability and staff to study community needs and devise ways to meet them. It also has the vision to see new avenues the community should develop and explore. We appreciate that the Community Foundation is active in so many aspects of our community. We have confidence in its judgment and appreciate its excellent communication with donors.” Each year people who care about our community and its future make annual gifts to the Grand Rapids Community Foundation. Many donations go to our Fund for Community Good, which makes grants to a variety of nonprofits that do systemic change work in Kent County. People also make annual gifts to our Field of Interest Funds, such as for the environment, children, LGBT youth, the arts and others. Many annual donors support our Challenge Scholars program. We also offer special giving groups for annual donors, including One Hundred New Philanthropists for donors who want to make an ongoing commitment to the Community Foundation.

METZ LEGACY SOCIETY

DONOR STORY

Norm + Marilyn Leven “We really feel strongly about Challenge Scholars. The connection with this program was primarily because I went to Harrison Park, then to Union High School. In fact, my three siblings and I all graduated from Harrison Park and Union. We normally have a big party for major birthdays and anniversaries, but this year we wanted to do something special for my 85th birthday. Because of my connection to Harrison Park and Union we approached the Community Foundation about doing something for Challenge Scholars to celebrate this milestone occasion. So, we started the Norm and Marilyn Leven Challenge Scholars Fund. It’s a great cause and if the funds grow and the gifting is steady, it will be around a long time to provide educational opportunities for generations of deserving students. ”

Much of the Grand Rapids Community Foundation’s existing endowment was created with planned gifts. Donors who are committed to our community’s future—and want to ensure that causes they care about are supported forever—can make gifts through their will or estate plan. When you inform us of your bequest to the Community Foundation, we invite you to be part of our Metz Legacy Society. This ensures that we know exactly what your philanthropic intentions might be.

OUR LGBT FUND

DONOR STORY

George Stoutin + David Heilman “We’ve both been very fortunate, and we enjoy giving back and helping others. If you can, it's important to deal with the root cause of things as opposed to just giving money to symptoms. Our LGBT Fund is the attempt to not just help with current issues, but to prevent issues in the future. It was the fund that led us to the Community Foundation. It’s the professionalism and the passion within the fund that we’ve seen within the last number of months. Being able to develop a sense of trust was very easy to do. Because we’ve been involved in the Our LGBT Fund through the Community Foundation, it has caused us to rethink, ‘What’s our legacy?’”

The Our LGBT Fund, a special Field of Interest Fund was created in 2014 through a matching gift of $100,000 from the Donor Advised Fund of Carol Sarosik and Shelley Padnos and has grown with support of donors throughout West Michigan. The fund’s initial purpose is to help nonprofits that work with homeless and runaway LGBT youth, providing them with resources and support to thrive. LGBT community members and allies serve on a committee that raises funds and recommends grants.

The Youth Grant Committee of Grand Rapids Community Foundation engages high school students from Kent County in grantmaking focused on programming for young people. Throughout the school year, students from public, private and homeschools meet to determine their peers’ most pressing needs, review grant proposals and make grant recommendations to the Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees. The Youth Grant Committee Fund was established in 1991 with a matching grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

National Kidney Foundation

How long does it take to change a lifestyle? Probably a lifetime, but one year is a great start, especially with a proven program. National Kidney Foundation of Michigan has designed a Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) that is recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an effective and proven lifestyle program to prevent type 2 diabetes, which can lead to kidney disease. Through a $117,500 grant from Grand Rapids Community Foundation, this DPP is being offered at community-based sites including Baxter Community Center, Brown Hutcherson Ministries and Cook Library Center. The local program focuses on African Americans and Latinos, who are at

greater risk (about five percent) of developing type 2 diabetes than Caucasians are. DPP participants will be part of a small and supportive group working with a trained lifestyle coach. They will learn about healthier eating habits, ways to be more physically active and other behavior changes. Groups meet an hour per week for the first 16 weeks and then monthly for the rest of the intervention year. “The program has gone through rigorous evaluation and is a proven intervention for preventing type 2 diabetes,” said Kate Schmid, Community Foundation vice president, program.

“I myself am a kidney transplant recipient. I battled with diabetes and being on dialysis. My doctors were telling me to do certain things. I didn’t listen until I was at stage 4 kidney disease. So, then I really had to make a choice. You’re either going to live right or you’re going to die. Those were the choices for me. That was kind of a wakeup call, and, when I started to get things together, I realized that God had a bigger calling on my life. That’s the reason I started volunteering with the National Kidney Foundation. Now I’m teaching classes, because I would hate for anybody to have to go through what I went through. Because of the knowledge shared in classes like these, people can make wiser decisions about the things they put in their mouth, about living a sedentary lifestyle, about just how they think in general. I see people changing in my class. They are losing weight, they are eating healthier and they’re loving it. I see lives being transformed. This program is so valuable. It’s worth its weight in gold, and it needs to be spread throughout this community.” R E K E N N A S TA N F O R D Lifestyle Coach, National Kidney Foundation

Land Conservancy of West Michigan

It’s exciting in this day and age, in a growing city like Grand Rapids, to be able to create a vast new green space. With a $400,000 grant from the Community Foundation to The Land Conservancy of West Michigan, Blandford Nature Center entered into a partnership to purchase the 121-acre Highlands Golf Club in the northwest part of the city. The defunct golf course will be restored to a natural area, shared by Blandford and the Land Conservancy of West Michigan. The property is adjacent to Blandford’s existing location and will help them to expand their outdoor education programs. The Land Conservancy is considering using the property as their new organizational home and for community engagement projects.

What makes this even more interesting is that the property had originally been set for a 336-unit housing development. When the developer, Third Coast Development, learned that Blandford was interested in the property, it agreed to explore ways that Blandford could purchase it. With assistance from multiple funding sources, the property was secured. “Blandford Nature Center plays a critical role in educating and engaging residents as stewards of natural resources. Acquiring Highlands Golf Club greatly expands their outdoor education capacity and provides important green space within the city,” said Kate Schmid, Community Foundation vice president, program.

“As soon as Blandford Nature Center opened, I thought this would be a perfect addition. And every time I would give a program about the nature center, which I did quite frequently, I would say, ‘Our last land conquest will be The Highlands.’ Of course, whenever I would say that to an audience— all different kinds of people—they would all laugh, including me, because that was never going to happen. But, when Jason Meyer, our president and CEO, called me and said ‘Guess what?’ I was in total disbelief that it was even a possibility. My whole life with the nature center has been what I call serendipity. People believed in what we were doing. The whole thing is to get people’s feet back on the ground. Literally, get their feet back on the ground. How can we make decisions about how to use our natural resources if we don’t know anything about them? We’ve got to get people surrounded by what we have here and they will say, ‘Wow! This is wonderful!’” M A R Y J A N E D O C K E R AY Founding Director, Blandford Nature Center

Dwelling Place

24

Housing is a hot commodity in Grand Rapids overall, and, on the West Side, affordable housing is becoming harder and harder to locate. This is a special concern because our Challenge Scholars families and schools are located on the West Side. Without affordable housing, we risk having families move away and lose the program benefits. In 2015, Dwelling Place staff and others participated in a housing summit hosted by Other Way Ministries. The summit provided qualitative and quantitative data about West Siders’ challenges in finding and keeping affordable housing. This summit united Kent County Land Bank Authority, Grand Rapids Community Foundation and other partners to help ease the problem. A Grand Rapids Community Foundation grant of $500,000 to Dwelling Place will provide 68 units of housing in two new

apartment buildings located near Harrison Park School. We’ve had a long relationship with Dwelling Place, working together to provide housing primarily in Grand Rapids’ Heartside neighborhood. “The level of neighborhood engagement on this Harrison Park project has been extensive. It includes outreach and advocacy with the neighborhood associations, door-to-door visits with residents, a design charrette and information gathering by the Westside Collaborative and resident notification regarding public comment opportunity at the Planning Commission hearing. We’re looking forward to seeing it happen!” said Laurie Craft, Community Foundation vice president, community investment.

“When I first got here from California, it was for the jobs. Then the jobs got slow and the economy got bad. I still stuck it out because of my kids. I’ve always had a job, so that’s kind of what kept me going. I needed to find housing for my kids to grow up in. This is more than I even hoped or dreamed for. Dwelling Place has always been there to help people, and they also believe in rebuilding—not just building places but also rebuilding the mind, for the individual to be comfortable with what they do and how they live. The management will work with you, but you’ve got to be upfront. I’m not giving up.” BRUCE FULLENWIDER Resident, Dwelling Place

Community Rebuilders

Once a system was in place to ensure that any veteran in Kent County experiencing a housing crisis could quickly access housing resources, Community Rebuilders—the lead agency in our community’s effort to end veteran homelessness—asked, “What’s next?”

veterans often experience when returning to civilian life. Both programs focus primarily on trauma recovery. It’s a holistic approach, which ultimately allows veterans to reconnect with their families and communities, go back to work and pursue education.

Through a $250,000 grant from Grand Rapids Community Foundation, Community Rebuilders launched AFTER Hub. Through this new initiative, Community Rebuilders will partner with local wellness providers to offer two national wellness programs for veterans—Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds of AllenForce and Mindful Resilience by Veterans Yoga Project. Both programs were designed to address specific mental and physical disorders, such as PTSD, that

“Community Rebuilders provides a full range of supportive services to veterans and their families. They have developed trusted relationships with local veterans and veteran services organizations. Based on feedback from veterans they serve, Community Rebuilders plans to expand social and wellness support for veterans across Kent County,” said Kate Schmid, Community Foundation vice president, program.

“I am a veteran, and I think we need to have more programs and things geared toward our veterans, because we served. During that time of service, we went out and risked our lives to make it better for people back home. A lot of times we are pushed to the side once our service commitment is over. Programs like AFTER Hub will give more confidence that someone is out there looking after us. We can participate in some of the things that people do on a normal basis and be trained on different areas of fitness. I talk to other veterans a lot about getting back into fitness to just develop their minds and bodies. It helps them get back to how they were before going to the military and being injured.” KEVIN WRIGHT AFTER Hub Project Coordinator, Community Rebuilders

F is for Financials.

This was an outstanding year financially for Grand Rapids Community Foundation. We had gift revenue of $6.8 million, and we once again awarded over $13 million in grants and scholarships. Our main endowed pool, the Balanced Plus Pool, returned +12.9 percent for the year. This very diversified investment pool aims to provide long-term investment returns while reducing risk through asset diversification. Returns were driven by very positive results in domestic and international equity markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, a widely used measure of stock market performance, is up over 20 percent since the election last year. Improved corporate earnings, low unemployment and continued low interest rates have all driven the positive returns. The Community Foundation also offers two other investment options for donors. The Balanced Pool, a 60 percent stock/40 percent bond fund returned +11.9 percent for the year. The Socially Responsible Pool, a 60 percent stock/40 percent bond fund that considers both financial and social good in its investments, returned +12.9 percent for the year. We are very pleased with the results for the year. All Grand Rapids Community Foundation portfolios are under the direct oversight of the Investment Review Committee (IRC), which reports to the Board of Trustees. The IRC is composed of senior level finance and business professionals who focus on aligning the investment portfolio with the Community Foundation’s long-term financial goals. It is a privilege to work alongside a group of such talented and dedicated individuals. The IRC made several changes to the portfolio over the last year, including a new investment advisor, a new investment policy statement and several new investment managers. While the near term presents several challenges from an investing perspective, the IRC believes the portfolio is well positioned to achieve our long-term financial goals. We are proud to have recently received a 4 Star (highest rating) from Charity Navigator, with a near perfect rating in accountability and transparency for the efforts we make in providing information to our donors. About Grand Rapids Community Foundation

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR PHILANTHROPY

Grand Rapids Community Foundation has a staff of professionals to help you accomplish your philanthropic goals. Whether you are interested in giving during your lifetime as an annual donor to the Fund for Community Good—or want to establish a fund or create a planned gift— we are here to help. We’ll listen and provide ideas and options to help you make our greater Grand Rapids community even greater!

62

HOW TO APPLY FOR A GRANT

Grants are awarded six times per year after review by program staff, the Community Action Committee and approval by the Board of Trustees. Pre–applications and grant proposals are accepted throughout the year. Minimally, grant applicants must serve people in Kent County, have IRS 501(c)(3) designation and work in the areas of education, arts and social engagement, the environment, health, neighborhoods or economic prosperity. Our guidelines detail other criteria for funding consideration. To learn more about submitting a pre–application or applying for a grant, please visit Grand Rapids Community Foundation online at grfoundation.org or call 616.454.1751.
