GREAT GRAY OWLS (STRIX NEBULOSA NEBULOSA) AND FOREST MANAGEMENT
AgSTP, ACT.--Great Gray Owl (Strix nebulosa nebulosa) populationsin North America have likely been stable over the past 10-100+ yr. Local populationsfluctuate in responseto food supplyand/or nestsite availability.Breeding Great Gray Owls require preexistingnest structuresin forest standstiNatare adjacentto open foraging habitat, preferablywitINhunting perches.Current forestrypracticeshave the potential to affect about 75% of the Great Gray Owls' breeding range in North America.Intensive timber managementtypicallyremoveslarge diameter and deformed nest trees, leaning treesusedby juveniles for roostingbefore they can fly and standswith dense canopy closureused by juveniles and adultsfor coverand protection.Modified forestmanagementcan, however, createnewforaginghabitat by openingup large, denseforeststands.Specificrecommendedguidelinesincluderestrictionof harvest unit size (-
