INTRODUCTION • Currently bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for morbid obesity; the role of biliopancreatic secretions in this success is poorly understood. • We sought evidence of gut inflammation and variation in exocrine pancreatic function after bariatric procedures.

METHODS • Participants were prospectively recruited into four groups: obese controls (Body mass index (BMI)>30 kg/m², n=7); adjustable gastric banding (AGB, n=6); Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB, n=7); biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS, n=5). • Gut inflammation was assessed by faecal calprotectcin (FCp), measured by quantitative Enzyme Linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay (ELISA) (PhiCal® Calprotectin ELISA Kit, Germany), with reported coefficient of variation (CV%) and limit of detection (LoD)
