Help remove the smoke screen and the deal with the actual problems. When we are working with students we don’t want to talk at them and give them a list of verses. Talk with them, connect the dots in their life and find out where the holes are. Take some time and get to know them: their family background, personalities, what makes them tick, etc… Use the funnel approach, start with broad questions and narrow it down to find out what they think about the topic. Tell me why you’re hurting, what’s on your heart and mind. When did this start, how long have you been involved in this? Tell me what you are thinking and doing before you do this? Is it something that you did wrong or was done to you? Name it for them and ask. What is the sin specifically, to what degree is their struggle? (Ex: Did they just try alcohol or are they drinking every day.) What is causing them to go there, not the symptoms? Discovery Method: A+B=C. A series of questions that gets them to name the answer. What do you think is hindering your walk? What does God call bitterness? What do you need to do?
