Purpose During the MDOT and MDA Mississippi Port Directors Economic Development Workshop in August 2014, six major initiatives were created to help market Mississippi’s ports. To foster development at Mississippi’s a survey/ checklist was developed to optimize ports’ websites for site consultants and economic developers. The survey was designed to ensure that the ports’ websites contain the information that site consultants and developers need, as well as, to enhance the overall usability of the site.

Importance Websites are vitally important in economic development. When businesses are looking to move to a new location, the first step is to review the websites of the potential communities. The businesses are searching for particular information to narrow down the list of potential communities. It is a process of elimination rather than a process of selection, so having the right information on a website can be the difference in success and failure.

Methodology The survey developed is shown in the next panel of the poster. The usability section of the survey was generated directly from Cappel and Zhenyu’s (2007) research on website usability. Secondary research of published articles in conjunction with interviews with site consultants and economic developers were drawn upon to shape information questions. The usability and information questions are nominal questions and therefore constrained to either “yes” or “no” as possible answers. The Port of Itawamba website was analyzed by three separate people to test the survey for validity and reliability.
