Prologue
The University of Valladolid in Figures By publishing the “The UVa in Figures”, the University of Valladolid is once again fulfilling its yearly commitment to its members and society as a whole by offering transparency. The present publication enables us to provide an account of many of the activities, areas and aspects of university life which may be reflected in figures. Providing access to information and the pursuit of a transparent management system are objectives which underpin democratic practice and culture, and for which publishing “The UVa in Figures” has become a key tool at our university. Transparency brings the university closer to its members and to society at large, and enables the work it is carrying out to be appraised and measured, thereby leading to improvement by setting out more ambitious goals. Exercising the autonomy which has been granted to universities, and which is reflected constitutionally, today requires data and indicators which can shape our institution’s future planning, decision-making and ongoing improvement. “The UVa in Figures” thus provides a further tool for the University of Valladolid’s Quality Assurance System. In future, we hope to see this practice go hand in hand with other instruments and policies which ensure transparency and which can offer a better understanding of the university, avoiding any improper action. “The UVa in Figures” will provide all those who are linked to the university (students, teaching staff, administration and service staff) with interesting information to help them plan and improve their day to day work, as well as affording them the opportunity to gain an insight into and indeed offer their own critical appraisal of the current state of the university. It is essential that “The UVa in Figures” continue to provide us all with an understanding of our university, thereby enabling us to improve it together. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff involved in this work, and who every day help to make the University of Valladolid a better university, for their effort and dedication.
Marcos Sacristán Represa CHANCELLOR
