Sep 29, 2017 - at the front of the school on Mondays and Friday .... our kids how to be safe, respectful and responsible
Volume 5, Issue 4 September 29, 2017

A Few Thoughts from Mr. Galati This past week, I had the opportunity to visit a number of classrooms as a part of my “normal” day. The reason I enjoy this so much is that I get a chance to not only see good teaching but to also watch your kids in action. Besides the regular occurrences of classroom dialogues and small group work, I had the chance to sit next to students and hear them tell me what they were doing, why they were doing it, and what they would do next. Regardless of the activity, our kids really can explain their learning. This not only is a tribute to our teachers, who establish learning goals for our students, but our kids are able to articulate what it is they are doing. Watching students learn and enjoy it in the process is magic to me and encourages the young students. As you greet your little one at the end of the day, ask them what they did today and what they learned. It could turn out to be a wonderful conversation.

Hurricane Harvey Update by: Ellie, 5th grade

If byyou L know about the cans and bottles drive, then you may want to hear the update on the drive. So far we have made $58.70 and with your help we can make more money to save people's lives from Hurricane Harvey. Our goal is to make $500 to donate to Texas Organizing Project. If you have not heard about the drive, we will be outside at the front of the school on Mondays and Friday from 2:20pm to 2:30pm. We will be collecting empty cans and bottles from September 18th to October 12th. If you cannot bring cans and bottles on Mondays and Fridays we can make an exception and your child can bring the cans and bottles to one of our classes. Julia is in Mrs. Mininger’s class (209), Ellie is in Mr. Rozell’s class (208), and Anna is in Gilkey/Bass (portable ZOO2).

Picture Day

by: Hazel, 4th grade

This Tuesday we had picture day. In my opinion picture day is fun, but other people may think differently. First picture day is fun because you get to pick out your background color and dress up. It is also fun because you don’t know what your picture is going to look like and it is fun to wonder if you had a silly look when the camera took your picture or if you looked really good! Even though you might have to stand in line, I think it is always worth it because it’s great to have a picture of yourself each year and our parents love them! Also, what did everyone think of the posing with books? by L

A Weekend Walk

by: Eli, 4th grade

By Ms.

This weekend I went on a hike with my grandma, her dogs, my mom and my dad. We went to the Wilson River trail. It was convenient because it was only an hour away from Portland. The walk to the falls was beautiful as you walk down the Wilson River. The hike was 1.7 miles each way. There is also a kid-friendly museum called the Tillamook Forestry Center, where they have a fire lookout that replicates what is was like to work and live in a fire lookout. And the best part is it’s all free. I recommend this hike because it is nice and short but pretty as you walk.

Music in Third Grade by: Emma & Lluna, 3rd grade

Third grade Music is awesome so far!!! We have been using recorders to make music. So far, we have learned three notes: A, B and G. We also learned a song called “hot cross buns”. Before music class begins we do brain dance. Brain dance is where “ZWDubby” puts on music and we dance to it. “ZWDubby” is our school music teacher and we like her. We cannot wait to learn more songs.

Responsibility

by: Liam, 4th grade

Responsibility is doing the right thing responsibly. If Mr. Galati catches you being responsible, he might give you a star coupon. I do not mean to appear prideful, but one morning I found a Kindle Fire on the stairs of the play structure. Then I gave it to Mr. Galati and he gave me a star coupon. I hope you liked reading this.

Brain Projects

by: Lola, 5th grade

In Mr. Rozell’s class, we stated learning about the brain. First, we got into groups, which were picked randomly by our teacher. Then, we read about the brain and answered questions on a worksheet. We read off old newspapers that Mr. Rozell had reused for a while. After a few weeks of that, Mr. Rozell talked to us about a project. We got a paper telling us all the different obtis we had to present. Some options were singing, writing a report, drawing a picture, etc. We got to present the next Wednesday, Thursday or Friday of this past week. Our actual project wasn’t graded, but our speech was graded. We were being graded on if we spoke loud enough, at the right speed. I did my project on the limbic system. I chose to write a report and also draw a picture. I can’t wait till the fourth grader get to do this project next year because I really liked it.

A Llewellyn Experience by: Sadie & Gabby, 3rd grade

At Llewellyn, our students are full of education and also math. At Llewellyn everyone will learn and do plenty of math. They will learn about animal science, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction and also other kinds of math. At Llewellyn, we also do a lot of art. First we do a selfportrait of ourselves. We like art because it’s fun and educating. It teaches us history about some of our favorite painters and other artists. Some of the art we do is actually based on those artists. Some of these include people like Vincent Van Gogh and Georgia O’Keeffe. Both of those artists are famous. Van Gogh’s most famous painting is entitled “The Starry Night”.

At A Glance

This week we highlight Library and Counseling

Library News: Mrs. McDonald and I are happy to be back at school sharing our favorite stories, teaching library skills and checking out books to students and teachers. In technology we’ve been teaching 2nd-5th graders about being good Digital Citizens. All 3rd-5th graders brought home a “contract” that contains expectations for using school technology. The digital citizenship instruction plus the contract reminds our kids how to be safe, respectful and responsible online. Click here for 10 helpful hints about online safety tips for kids. Tumblebooks is a great resource you can use at home. The district pays for each school to have a subscription to this e-book website that includes over 600 titles for K-6. There are animated talking picture books, chapter books, videos, non-fiction titles, books in French and Spanish, graphic novels and math stories. There are also quizzes, games and puzzles with most every book to extend the learning. Click on Tumblebooks from this page and you never have to put in a username and password. http://www.pps.net/library-services. Happy reading! Susan Robertson - Library Media Specialist Counseling: The counseling team is looking forward to another successful year with your students. We are happy to announce that Brittany Sill-Turner, has joined the team. Brittany started as our school secretary last year while she was in her first year of graduate school at Lewis and Clark. She will be serving K, 1st, 3rd and 5th graders as a full time counselor here at Llewellyn. Samantha Lannom will work with 2nd and 4th graders. Brittany and I are working together now to create a student needs assessment. We will be asking the students, teachers and parents to complete a short survey. We will provide a link to the survey for teachers and family members to complete. Students will be given a survey here at school to complete. The survey will be age and grade level appropriate. We will gather all of this information to help best guide our work here at Llewellyn. On another note, our office has come a long way and is looking good! It still needs a little love. We could use some fun lamps (both desk and standing floor lamps, carpet(s) and maybe a loveseat and/or bean bags. If you happen to have some unloved items needing a home, perhaps the counseling office is the place! As always, please feel free to contact us with any concerns or questions. Our contact info is listed below: Samantha Lannom [email protected], 503-916-6199, and Brittany Sill-Turner, [email protected], 503-916-6104

NURSING NOTES by: Bev O’Brien, RN

My Lunch Pouch by: Alma, Kindergarten

Today, I left my lunch pouch outside under the covered area. I was worried that I left it out there. Two older students, found it, and brought to the office. Mark then brought it into my classroom and put it on Teacher Aubrey’s desk. I saw my pouch on her desk and I got it back. I was really happy about getting my pouch back. Thank you for bringing my pouch back!

The racks are emptied at the end of every month (typically a couple days following). Labeled clothes are returned to their owners and unlabeled clothes are washed and donated to the PPS Clothing Center, which provides clothing to PPS families in need. LABEL, LABEL, LABEL! Please label clothes with first and last name - especially coats, sweatshirts and other items they may take off during the day.
