Mar 17, 2017 - Did you know that. Penguins live in. Antarctica and in other cold places? Also, they live in rainforests
Volume 4, Issue 23 March 17, 2017
A Few Thoughts from Mr. Galati This time of year is one of the most stressful for administrators in the school system. It is the season when we begin to plan for the next year and get tentative ideas about the budget and the number of staff positions we will get. As many of you know, our parents and community have worked diligently for years to ensure that Llewellyn has adequate staffing. Folks have shown up at board meetings, worked very hard to learn about the budget processes, served on district committees, petitioned for a boundary change, and written letters. Our school has greatly benefitted from all of this work and I know that these times of stress and worry about the budget and staffing affect all of you as well. It feels like we are on a rollercoaster each year as we get numbers, organize to tell our needs, and then adapt to the changes this brings. I despise creating worry and stress for parents or staff. I know that all of us want the best for our school and for the wonderful people who work here, making this school the vibrant learning environment our students need. I will do my best to communicate what I can when I can. I know that this is a season when rumors fly and tempers are tender. Please know that I give my all to our school and will ensure that Llewellyn continues to be the special place that we have made it together.

Penguins in Room 108 by: Sophia & Jade, 1st grade by L
Did you know that Penguins live in Antarctica and in other cold places? Also, they live in rainforests and on islands. We are learning right now about rock hoppers. Rock hoppers are a type of penguin that has yellow feathers that stick out of its head. We like learning about penguins and a few days ago we did an experiment. We used thermometers and measured how cold our ocean is and how cold the ocean has to be for penguins to live in it. We then learned about how tall penguins are. We used string and a tape measure to measure the height of the Rock hopper which is 18 inches long and 5-6 pounds. We like penguins.
All About the Bike Train by: Sofia, 2nd grade
Do you know that the bike train is a lot more fun than walking or driving? You get your exercise when you bike. Do you want to know how to do it? You find a big group of bikes then you go in the group! Tell your family to take a look at their email to find the route. We ride every Friday. I heard that there is going to be a special guest rider soon!

A Fourth of July Carol by: Solomon,
5th
grade
The real story of why we celebrate the Fourth of every July in America involves much more than the thirteen colonies forming a country. It is a complicated story involving taxes, government, rebellion, and tea parties. The fifth grade is putting on a play that will tell you the story of the Fourth of July. The date of the play is March 22nd. The four different fifth grade classes all have different parts in it. The play has been well planned and we will do our best to teach viewers more about the story of the Fourth of July in a fun way.
Class Birthdays
by: Ceiba & Libby, 4th grade
Almost every month, people in our class have birthdays. Mrs. Engstrom gives us a Happy Birthday pencil and bookmark. The birthday boy or girl gets to pick our break game. But before that we sing a Happy Birthday song of their choice. They also tell us what they are going to do to celebrate their birthday.
Writing in Ms. Ronyak’s Class by: Carter, 1st grade
In Mrs. Ronyak's 1st grade class we are starting a writing unit. My topic is fire trucks. I have a book about fire trucks that will help me do my writing. Fire trucks are my favorite thing to write about, so I am excited.

March Madness by: Joshua, 5th grade
The time is upon us; It’s March Madness season. These next three weeks, the 68 best teams in Men’s College Basketball and the 64 best teams in Women’s College basketball meet. The men’s tournament began on Tuesday with the first four games. Then on Thursday and Friday the first round starts when all the teams play (except the four teams that already got knocked out). If teams advance, they are matched up against harder competition. There is no consolidation bracket for teams that lose. For the fun of the tournament, fans try to pick teams for their bracket. If you have never filled out a bracket, here are some tips: pick some upsets, but in the end go with heavyweights. In my opinion the national champion will be UCLA because of their star player Lonzo Ball. Like every year, all 68 teams have dreams, but only one teams’ dreams are reached.
Art in Mrs. Streano’s class is different than any in the whole school. She makes the class study the artist, then we know important facts about the artist. After the learning part the fun part comes in. First, we get our supplies and we get started on the art. She does an example on the projector and then we get started. The class can talk and do art at the same time. After we are finished we put the art piece on a background so there is a border. Finally, she puts the art on the wall.

At A Glance
This week we highlight Kindergarten and First Grades
The Kindergarteners have been busy being scientists recently. We are in the midst of an exciting science unit called Balls and Ramps. This week Teacher Aubrey's class and Mrs. Frisby's class went to OMSI. Next week Mrs. Kanz's class will get to go. We will also be revisiting our Tree Unit next week by planting three trees. We are continuing to work on our How-To Stories and have been reading stories about women as part of Women's History Month. First Grade: This week we have started researching for our All About writing unit. The kids are really enjoying gathering facts about their topic! We are also learning and researching Penguins for math and science. The students all have their own Penguin folder where they are collecting facts on six different kinds of penguins. During literacy we have been learning all about those tricky sounds spellings like: ea, ee, ai, ay, etc. We continue to work on comprehension and reading smoothly with inflection. Please remember that there will be no report card this quarter, but we are tracking your child's progress daily and if we have any concerns we will reach out!

the entire day but in the afternoon we watched Ratatouille. It was not my first choice but I liked it anyway. We did not finish the movie that day, but we finished it the next. Overall, we had a great PJ day!
