A Few Thoughts from Mr. Galati Today as I write my column for this week, I think about the wonderful things that have happened around the building this week. On Tuesday evening, our first graders had their music concert. I was so proud of their performance. They truly entertained our parents and the smile on my face never left me all evening. On Wednesday, I spent time in classes watching how our students helped one another. Whether it was double digit multiplication story problems, reading in small groups, or moving through math centers, our kids are kind, compassionate, and most of all, caring. Their patience and support of one another makes me aware of what an incredible place we get to be a part of. On Thursday, during lunch recess, I watched how our students invited others to be a part of their activities including 4-square games, kick ball games, and walking the track. Our kids have a sense of pride, a sense of compassion, and a sense of the importance of friendship. We work in a wonderful place in which our kids truly shine. As we approach this last week of school, thank you for you, your kids, and most of all for the positive and friendly vibe that Llewellyn continues to shine with.

Studying Plants by: Hattie, 3rd grade

In Lclass we planted seeds. Our by

teacher brought soil into the classroom so we can plant our seeds. We planted four seeds per cup. Some of the seeds sprouted but most of them died. So Mrs. Engstrom let us plant one more seed in our cups. The new seeds were soaked in water for two days and so she thinks maybe that they’ll survive. She also put a big sun lamp over the seeds. We hope they'll grow because our last experiment didn't work. I am so excited to see how they grow.

The YMCA

by: Emma, 3rd grade

By Ms.

I like The YMCA. I like it because it makes me feel safe and there are so many fun things to do. I love to do the art projects on Fridays. But what I like most is the fact that I can spend time with my friends. The YMCA staff are so nice to kids. Finally, the Kindergarteners are really sweet and kind.

Safety Tips

by: Guy & Javin, 3rd grade

grade

If we all work together as a community we can accomplish something big. For instance, what we did last week with the donation drive. We all worked together to collect things for people who are homeless. We collected eight pairs of socks, ten undershirts, twelve tooth brushes, one tube of toothpaste, eight men's underwear, 51 pairs of women's underwear, three packets of floss, and two hats. I learned that if we all work together we can get the job done!

Hi everybody. We would like to talk about safety. When you came to school, you are excited but you still have to follow the rules. Here is some examples, do not run in the hallways and also the stairs. And also no sliding on the gym floor because nobody wants floor burn. Last, but not least, no going up the slide because if one person is sliding down you’ll get hurt. Do not run with scissors because it is not safe. This has been safety tips.

Explorers Comp A-Z

by: Renia, 5th grade

by: Hazel, Amy & Julia, 5th grade

This year in our class we have been doing a morning work called Comp A-Z. For each week, we have a letter that we base everything on. Each of us have a composition book that we do the work in. Some of the things we do research with our letter on our math (things like geometry for “G”) a famous person (Isaac Newton for “I”) and a state (such as Florida for “F”). The subjects that you write are about literacy, math, social studies. If you are in Miss Mininger’s class you can look forward to Comp A-Z.

Holiday Sing Along

by L

In Mr. Rozell’s class, we are studying explorers. I know, it sounds like quite the boring subject. But really it is actually interesting. For example, I am studying Juan Ponce de Leon. He was a Spanish explorer that went on an expedition with Christopher Columbus. He was looking for the Fountain of Youth. It was believed that if you looked into the water, it gave you the power to look young forever. Juan was also the one who named Florida. Juan was born on December 3, 1460, in Santervas, Spain. He had three daughters named Maria, Isabel, and Juana. He had one son named Luis. In our class we have to do an expedition proposal to our teacher who will pretend to be the King of Rozelland. We are pretending to live in that time and be trying to get Mr. Rozell to let us voyage with our explorer. We have to be good at persuading him to let us go. I hope he lets me go!

The holiday sing along is a performance that students practice for and sing fun holiday songs. The whole school is going to sing the holiday songs Friday, December 15th, so we spread joy to other people so they can be happy too. Also, this is going to be the first time because last time it was too snowy so we couldn’t do it. It will build community at our school.

Thank you to The Moreland Presbyterian Church and Christine Pham Hsu for your kind donation for our families in need.

This week we the Library and Physical Education

Library: This past week was Computer Science Education Week and to celebrate, our students participated in The Hour of Code, a national promotional program that encourages every student to write code for at least an hour. During the week we introduced coding activities during computer lab times for all 2nd-5th grade students. These free resources can be used at home all year long: Hourofcode.com Thank you to Lisa Chan, a Llewellyn parent, who talked to fifth graders about her job in technology and helped with a coding activity. Multnomah Public Library would love to see your family during the winter break. Having your kids pick out a large bag of books to have at home over the holidays has countless benefits for you and your child. Your kids would love to share the books they check out with you too. Read, Read, Read!

PE: November was a crazy month for Physical Education at Llewellyn. Many of the classes earned fun game days for getting class points. We played everything from capture the flag to scooters; the students had a lot of fun and are looking forward to earning more class points for another game day. Kindergarten and first grade have been working hard on developing their throwing and catching skills, basketball dribbling, and hula hooping. Untied shoes have become a safety issue in PE, so kindergarten and first grade will be working on developing their shoe tying skills after winter break. We will be using the traditional method and as well as the two bunny ear method. I am excited to get to put all of our students’ names on the shoe tying wall of fame. The second, third, fourth and fifth graders have also been learning about basketball. We have covered the names of the lines, as well as dribbling, passing and shooting skills. We will be concluding our unit this week and starting a new one when we come back from winter break. In the coming weeks we will be getting the lines on the playground repainted. If you should happen to see this job in progress, please be sure to tell the workers thank you!

Our Class Jobs

by: Graceyn, 5th grade

In Miss Mininger’s class, we have class jobs. There are fun ways to help put our community in class! On our wall we have a chart hat has everyone’s name on it and jobs are velcroed to some of the names. Here are some of our jobs: We have an Instagram photographer. Each week, one of us posts a picture of art work or work we did in class! Then our Writing Manager makes sure our automatic pencil sharpener is cleaned out and our paper is neatly stacked up! Another is Head Custodian, who sweeps once per week and wipes desks when they need it.

Another is iPad Engineer. They make sure iPads are plugged in and all of our apps are closed. We have a couple of other jobs. Tub Duty and Bean Manager. Beans are a way to win fun activities the class does. We have to fill a jar, but be careful if you talk without raising your hand. You might get them taken away.
