A Few Thoughts from Mr. Galati Welcome Back! I hope that all of you had a restful and enjoyable winter break and that you had the chance to spend time with family and friends. Now, comes the work of transitioning back to routine, so please be sure to review the calendar for January. We have several things happening ranging from a Second Grade Concert to Family Craft Night to individual classroom field trips. As we get back in to the sign of things, it has been a delight to see your children again. Each day I am hearing great stories from students about their time off and how excited they are to be back at Llewellyn. Our teachers have welcomed them back and done an amazing job helping everyone settle in again. It is great to be back, listening to the healthy buzz of learning in our fabulous school!

The Smasher of Cars by: Andre & Ryan, Kindergarten
In LMs. Frisby’s class we by have centers. Yesterday, we built the car smasher. We used blocks and we used a rolling pin. We made it so that it goes down a ramp and it smashed Hot Wheels cars. The ramp makes balls go down at a slow speed. We think it is fun. Today, we made a bigger car smasher. Mr. Galati came into our classroom and called us an architect and an engineer.
Geometry
by: Emma, 3rd grade
In class we are working on geometry. Right now we are learning about Quadrilaterals. All Quadrilaterals (parallelograms) have four sides and four corners. We did a work sheet in class and measured all the sides in centimeters. We also are learning about trapezoids which have three different types of lines. Rhombuses all have congruent sides which means all of them are the same length. I really like geometry just remember that you have to know shapes and how many sides they have. This is my second favorite part of math. My first favorite part of math was learning temperatures. Math is awesome!

Christmas is coming Lights are on It is time to celebrate Winter is here Flowers bloom Seeds sprout Everybody's out Spring is coming
Girls On The Run by: Madeline, 4th grade
Solids, Liquids, and Gases by: Finley & Gia, 3rd grade
In class we are learning about solids, liquids, and gases. Now here are some things we have learned. If you want to tell the difference between a liquid and a gas, a liquid’s molecules stay together but turn into different shapes, gas molecules spread apart and do not touch. But a solids molecule stay in the same shape unless a force destroys it. That is what we learned.
The Doors
by: Callie, 1st grade
The doors are wide open, the bell is ringing. It’s time to learn with a spark in our eye. And with a calm body we learn together as one.
Have you ever heard of Girls On the Run? It’s an after school program for 3rd-5th grade girls. Girls have coaches that teach life skills that will help make them be a better person like nutrition and being kind. Then, girls go outside to play games and run laps for fitness and exercise. You can walk, jog or run. At the end, you run a 5K race and get a medal. I had fun with my friends. Don’t forget to sign up on January 13th to join Girls On the Run.
Owls
by: Sebastien, 2nd grade
Have you ever seen an owl in it’s habitat? Owls live in the desert and Portland. Their habitat is good for hunting. An owl’s habitat is good for them to live in. They catch mice in the desert. Owl habitats in Portland are sometimes not safe for them. They get taken from their families. It is sad for baby owls and their mothers to be separated. It is hard to be with people. Owl predators are hawks, big cats, and other owls. Now you know all about owls and their habitats.

Being a Meteorologist Being a meteorologist is complex! In 2nd grade we are learning about meteorology. We go outside at the end of every day. We observe the clouds we learned that a strato-nimbus cloud tells us that a big rain storm is coming our way. We notice the precipitation. It has been very dry lately. We monitor the wind by looking at a flag to see if the wind is strong, breezy, or no wind.

by: Maggie & Taben, 2nd grade
We also record the temperature. The thermometer is broken so we use the phone app. When we are outside we write it down on a piece of paper. When we come back in we report what we observed to the whole class. This can help us forecast the weather for the next day!
This week we highlight Second and Third Grades
Second Grade: All of the second grade meteorologists are enjoying their study of weather. We are learning about the four main elements of weather: Precipitation, wind, clouds and temperature and how we monitor and record weather. More recently we have dug deep in our study of clouds and we learning about how we can use clouds to forecast the weather to come. The four main clouds we are learning about are: cumulus, cumulonimbus, stratus and strato-nimbus. We realized we can apply our new knowledge to help Mr. Galati decide if we should have inside or outside recess. Third Grade: We are off and running for the New Year! Our Reader's Workshops continue with an emphasis on improving our comprehension skills and building our critical thinking about texts both fiction and nonfiction. Writer's Workshop is all about Informational/Expository writing with students self-selecting expert topics. Math is moving into Multiplication and Division and Time-how to tell it, add and subtract and solve time word problems. Finally, we are all beginning our Changes Science Unit: Solids, Liquids and Gases. Our Guidance lessons will continue two times a month with new small groups starting up with Counselor Brittany. As always, please stay in touch with us with any information that will give your child the most optimal learning experience. Stay warm!
