2 September 2016

Dear Nano Devotee, Two years ago, the Congregation agreed to actively continue with the process toward the Canonisation of our beloved Venerable Nano Nagle. We are all aware that this process requires a miracle through the intercession of Nano. While we continue to encourage widespread prayer for a miracle through Nano’s intercession, there is also an opportunity to ensure that Pope Francis comes to know more about Nano. In 2018, we will be celebrating the tercentenary of Nano’s birth. We know there is talk of the possibility of Pope Francis visiting Ireland for the 9th World Meeting of Families (22-26 August). What a wonderful opportunity that would be for him to declare Nano Nagle a Saint! We are inviting you to write to Pope Francis and tell him why you think that Nano should be canonised. The emphasis in the letter needs to be on Nano, a woman for our time in the way she addressed oppression, injustice and promoted faith formation in all those she encountered. The letter should be limited to one page. We welcome letters in any language to demonstrate the impact of Nano’s vision ─ crossing boundaries of faith, culture and oceans ─ especially through the mission of the Presentation Sisters and those who follow in her footsteps. In addition to telling him of your own strong devotion to Nano, the sort of things that you might include in the letter are:  why you believe that Nano is a saint  personal stories of devotion to Nano  favours ‘big’ and ‘small’ that have been granted  her challenges to the Penal Laws in Ireland and her legacy  her contribution to Catholic education, in particular in Ireland and subsequently to religious education across the world  her risk-taking  her transformation from a lady of great wealth to a beggar to support the poor  the love the poor of Ireland had for her

 her amazing faith and her devotion to the Sacred Heart  her founding of a religious order in Ireland  bringing the Ursuline Sisters to Ireland  her inspiration led to the establishment of a number of religious orders in Ireland including Mercy Sisters, Christian Brothers, Presentation Brothers, Irish Sisters of Charity, The Sisters of St Louis, Blessed Sacrament Sisters and Medical Missionaries of Mary  her appeal across all boundaries, religions and cultures  in spite of there being so few Sisters when Nano died, Presentation Sisters now minister in 24 countries across the world. These letters should be sent directly to Pope Francis at: His Holiness Pope Francis Apostolic Palace VATICAN CITY, 00120 ITALY

When you send the letter we would appreciate your emailing us at: [email protected] to let us know so that we have a record of the number of letters sent. If you wish to send us a copy of your letter we would appreciate that also. Please pass this request on to as many as possible e.g., Associates, Friends of Nano, co-workers, students and people in places of your ministries. Thank you so much for taking part in this letter writing campaign to bring Nano and her works to the attention of Pope Francis. During his Ad Limina visit to the Vatican in January 2017, Rev. Bishop John Buckley, Diocese of Cork and Ross, plans to have a conversation with the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. The Bishop also will be meeting Pope Francis. We hope that this dialogue will further the Cause of Nano. Blessings to you all,

Nano Nagle Commission The Nano Nagle Commission which was formed in September 2015 has been charged with ─ facilitating creative ways of making Nano known, loved,
