Introduction to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Course Length: 20 Hours

What will I learn? Cognitive behavioural therapy is a type of psychotherapy that is based on the theory that behaviour is the responsive outcome of negative thinking patterns and emotions. The aim of CBT is to get clients to change their negative thinking patterns into more positive thinking, resulting in positive outcomes. The course aims to develop the knowledge, theory and skills of the learners to enable them to progress onto a CBT certificate course should they wish to train as a therapist. After completing the initial workshop, learners will be introduced to the wide range of areas needed to broaden their psychological and counselling skills. Such topics include establishing client relationships, the format of constructive CBT sessions, behavioural conditioning, depression, phobias, and confidence boosting - amongst many more! How will I learn? Through a variety of ways including reading, writing, group work, posters, discussion, homework and independent learning. The tutor will provide a range of resources that are informative, stimulating and interesting to help learning take place. What equipment will I need to bring to the course each week? You need to bring along writing equipment (pens, paper etc), any notes/documents that you have made or been given by the tutor. What skills and abilities will I need to join the course? You need to have basic English and maths and be able to concentrate on the tasks / activities in order to learn, progress and achieve. Some learners will already have basic knowledge of the topic areas but will not be held back should they not have such knowledge. This course is inclusive of all types of learners. How will you check my progress? The tutor will constantly check the progress of each learner using different assessment methods so that the learner can receive feedback on their individual learning. This could be in the form of a one-to-one, a set task or activity, a piece of homework, or other assessment method. What will be my next stage to increase my skills? If you feel that you want to develop your skills on other available courses then advice and guidance will be offered to direct you on the best route. This could mean applying to various colleges or suchlike for places on accredited courses or simply enhancing your skills in other ways. Our aim is to improve the skills of the local community, making them more employable. Please feel free to discuss this with the tutor. If I need extra help what do I do?
