iPad Tips and Tricks More tips and tricks are available at: http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/ Power Down – To fully power down the iPad press and hold the sleep/wake button for 3-‐5 seconds and then use the on-‐screen slider to power off the device. Soft Reset – If an iPad becomes frozen or it seems to not be responding as expected the first troubleshooting technique should be to try a soft reset. To do this, press and hold the sleep/wake button and the home button simultaneously beyond the power off screen and until the apple icon appears on screen. Screenshot – To capture a picture of whatever is currently showing on the iPad screen, quickly click both the home button and the sleep/wake button in unison. You should see the screen flash very briefly and the image will then be saved to the iPad’s camera roll, inside Photos. Saving Internet Images – Once navigating to a picture on the Internet it can be saved to the iPad’s camera roll by clicking and holding a finger on top of the image and then selecting Save Image from the pop up options. Setting Image as Home and/or Lock Screen – Any picture saved on the iPad can be used as the background image for the home screen (behind apps when the iPad is awake) and/or for the lock screen (the screen that appears when the iPad is woken up and requires the slider to be engaged to unlock). To set these go to Photos and select an image from the camera roll or any album. Once the picture is full screen click the arrow icon (upper right) and select Use as Wallpaper. Then select the desired button (set lock screen, set home screen or set both) from the top right options. Add Website as a Button on Home Screen – Once you have navigated to a favorite website it can be added as an icon to the iPad home screen by clicking the arrow icon (left of the web address field) and then selecting the Add to Home Screen option. Type a desired name into the field for the icon and click Add. Side Switch Options – The switch on the side of the iPad above the volume buttons can be set as either a mute or a lock rotation of screen option. To change the settings for this switch go to Settings then General and set the desired setting under the Use Side Switch to heading. Add Emoticons Keyboard – To add emoticons to your keyboard options go to Settings and then General. Scroll down and select Keyboard then International Keyboards. Click on Add New Keyboard and select Emoji (from the lengthy list of possible keyboards). Now, when using an app that brings up the keyboard you can access and type your emoticons by clicking on the globe icon on the keyboard. To return to the standard keyboard, tap the globe icon again. Double Tap Home Button – To view the most recently used apps: Double-‐click the Home button. The most recently used apps appear in the multitasking bar at the bottom of the screen. Flick left to see more apps. Deleting Apps –You can delete apps you install from the App Store. If you delete an app, data associated with the app is also deleted. Touch and hold the app icon on the Home screen, until the icons start to jiggle, then tap the X in the upper left hand corner. Press the Home button when you finish deleting apps.
Close Apps – If an iPad is ever running slowly or if you find that you have too many apps running to use the bottom bar as a shortcut to get to your apps you can try closing apps that are running in the background. To do this, rapidly double click on the Home Button. Scroll through the gray bar of open apps (along the bottom of the home screen). Click and hold on any one app and then click on the red – button for each of the apps that you wish to close. Press the Home Button to get out of closure mode. Creating Folders -‐ Press your finger on an app and hold until the app icons start to shake. This is the same process up to this point that you follow to rearrange your apps. Drag one app on top of another to create a new folder containing both apps. A new folder icon appears when you do this. Continue to drag and drop any additional app icons to that folder that you wish to include. Folders are automatically named based on the App Store category of the included apps. You can rename the folders if you desire. Multitasking Gestures -‐ Open the Settings app, tap on General, and turn on the slider for Multitasking Gestures. Once it’s on, you’ll be able to use four or five fingers to pinch your way back to the Home screen, swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar, and swipe left and right between apps—no buttons required. Energy Saving Methods – Paying attention to just a few common sense pointers will pay off with a longer battery lifespan and battery life for your iPad. The most important thing is to keep your iPad out of the sun or a hot car (including not leaving it locked up in a hot trunk during summer). Heat will degrade your battery’s performance the most. •

Adjust brightness: Managing the screen brightness is the best way to extend iPad battery life. By default, your iPad has Auto-‐Brightness turned On. Auto-‐Brightness adjusts iPad screen brightness based on ambient lighting conditions; lowering brightness in low light conditions helps to extend battery life. You can adjust brightness yourself; go to Settings > Brightness & Wallpaper and drag the slider to the left to lower the default screen brightness. Turn off Wi-‐Fi: If you know you’re not going to be using Wi-‐Fi, you can turn it off to save power. Go to Settings > Wi-‐Fi and set Wi-‐Fi to Off. Note that if you have iPad with Wi-‐Fi + 3G and use it to browse the web, battery life may be improved by using Wi-‐Fi instead of cellular data networks. Use Airplane Mode in low-‐ or no-‐coverage areas: Because your iPad always tries to maintain a connection with a Wi-‐Fi network or 3G data network (Wi-‐Fi + 3G model), it may use more power in low-‐ or no-‐coverage areas. Turning on Airplane Mode can increase battery life in these situations. To turn on Airplane Mode, go to Settings and set Airplane Mode to On. Auto Lock: It may seem obvious, but you should lock your iPad when you aren’t using it. To lock iPad, press the Sleep/Wake button. You can also set the Auto-‐Lock interval so your iPad will turn off more quickly after a period of inactivity. To set Auto-‐Lock, go to Settings > General > Auto-‐Lock and set the interval to a short time, such as 1 minute.
