JAZZ SINGING TUNE LIST
Welcome to the 2013/14 Jazz School UK Ensemble Programme!
Repertoire You will find your tune list below. This season the plan is to concentrate on absorbing this essential repertoire much more thoroughly, because learning jazz tunes and songs (preferably by ear) is the most important single thing you can do to improve your jazz skills. Over the course of each day you will be swapping between two groups - one with just singers and the other for all instruments (either Bilbo or Gollum). This will give you the chance to hone your jazz singing skills before putting them into a band situation! We will be looking at two new tunes per meeting, and revising two others from the meeting before. We will also give out guide leadsheets in advance, to help you with your preparation. We will decide on keys in consultation with the group. Remember that these leadsheets should not be trusted absolutely - they are only guides to particular versions of standards. Use them (ideally) as transcription aids rather than as definitive scores! How do you learn a tune by ear? Listen over and over again. Sing. Listen and sing, listen and sing. If you have notation skills, try to write down what you are singing. If not, don’t worry, the singing alone is still valuable work! At any point in this process you can turn to some very helpful software, either Transcribe, or (my own choice) Amazing Slow Downer. Above all, don’t get disheartened - transcription is very difficult to begin with, but gets much easier as you go on!
