ABOUT THIS COURSE
TEACHING FORMAT
The purpose of this course is to provide students with the background knowledge and study skills necessary to confidently undertake the PHSI 191 Biological Physics course at Otago. It is designed for students whose training in high school Physics and Mathematics is incomplete, having not taken Year 12 (NCEA Level 2) Physics. Students undertaking this course will still need to meet the University’s admission and entrance criteria in order to proceed to full credit study.
This is an immersion course of three weeks, full time, 9am – 4pm, and will have integrated lectures/tutorials/workshops and seminars to effectively prepare students for the PHSI 191 Biological Physics course.
The course is intensive and interactive and runs in the Physics Department in the 3 weeks Monday 27 January – Friday 14 February 2014. This is a full-time course and cannot be taken concurrent with another Summer School/ Continuing Education paper.
Class Limit Maximum 65.
Restrictions Students who have achieved 14 credits and higher in NCEA Level 2 Physics or General Science, or a pass in Sixth Form Certificate Physics or Science, will not be accepted except with the approval of the Head of Department.
Prerequisites There are no prerequisites for this course. However, General Science and Mathematics at NCEA Level 1 or above would be an advantage.

The textbook for the course is Introduction to Biological Physics for the Health and Life Sciences by Franklin et al (Wiley). This is a required text for this course and for PHSI 191.
