Banking and finance OVERVIEW Singapore continues to be a triple-A rated economy with over 700 financial institutes providing a wide array of financial services. Growth is expected to be low this year for Banking and Finance due to slower growth in China offset by a recovering US economy. The banks’ loan-to-deposit ratios are expected to remain stable at 90%. However, profitability is expected to decline as slower loan growth weigh on net interest margin. Offshoring of banks to cheaper locations will continue. Given the importance of Singapore’s large banks to the overall economy and banking system,

call centre OVERVIEW Rising demand for customer service is expected to drive Asia Pacific’s Call Centre sector to grow over 8% this year. Much of the growth will be driven by domestic demand, especially from the Telecommunications and Banking and Finance sectors. However, the Call Centre sector in Singapore is already showing signs of saturation and on the mature end of the growth curve. Technological innovation and increase in customer service expectations will force local call centres to explore less labour intensive ways to enhance their services. While some centres are offshoring to other neighbouring countries, Singapore still remains

the prime spot for centres which run regional operations. Call Centres in Singapore tend to focus on volume hiring to meet demands of expansion plans. With the tight and competitive job market, employers need to constantly review and enhance their incentive schemes and operation processes to retain a competitive edge.

engineering & technical OVERVIEW Shipment of non-electronic products such as petrochemicals and civil engineering equipment shrank

Construction sector expected for

by 10.3% in December last year, while electronics shipments declined by 0.3%. A 6% decline in output from electronics, transport engineering and precision engineering impacted the Manufacturing industry in Singapore negatively. Hiring in Oil and Gas will be less robust as crude oil prices continue to remain low. Low commodity prices continue to impact Singapore’s Marine, Offshore and Engineering sector, reducing its order books. The Construction sector is also headed for a slowdown due to the weakening economy and Transport Engineering remains pessimistic as it continues to be weighed down by the marine and offshore cluster. Large public infrastructural projects remain a key support for the sector. Construction demand is expected to be sustained between $27 billion to $36 billion this year and into 2017. Singapore’s

Health & Life sciences OVERVIEW Singapore is Asia’s fastest growing bio-cluster with world class institutes and opportunities to develop new medicines and therapies that can be customised for regional and global markets. In tandem with rising populations and wealth, healthcare demand continues to increase rapidly across Southeast Asia. Singapore committed $16.1 billion in support of research, innovation and enterprise activities between 2011 and 2015. Recently, the government unveiled a $19 billion Research Innovation Enterprise 2020 plan to advance human and wellness through in-depth research and study, and support local R&D’s efforts over the next five years.

The country serves as a key home base to over 30 of the world’s leading biomedical sciences companies and has seen a surge in biomedical start-up firms. This has created a high demand for skills but a shortage of talents, giving rise to a candidate-driven market. In 2015, the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Manufacturing sector has over 4,800 skilled engineers and technicians. There is an on-going demand for professionals with specialist skill sets and talent across the pharmaceutical, nutrition and medical service areas. human resources OVERVIEW The hiring outlook for Human Resource is expected to remain steady, as a shift in the HR function from pure administration to business support has been observed as companies try to retain and develop their employees. Due to a tight labour market and companies being more cautious with hiring across all sectors, demand has moved towards more specialist talent acquisition roles, with a change in hiring focus from mid-senior to junior-mid level positions. As job scope becomes increasingly complex today,

Procurement, Supply Chain & Logistics OVERVIEW Over 192,600 professionals are employed in Logistics, with Singapore’s strategic location making it a critical logistics hub and channel for free trade. A prime location for major logistic firms, the country hosts 20 out of the top 25 global logistic players. DHL has recently set up a multi-million dollar innovation hub in Singapore, the first outside Germany. This hub aims to cultivate game-changing logistics solutions and promote joint innovations with clients in the region. As Singapore moves towards multi-channel retailing, there is a rising need for logistic companies to hire workers to handle new modes of supply chain management. Demand of skilled supply chain and logistics workers is expected to increase by 15-20% in the next two years. With increased Internet and mobile connectivity, it is essential for professionals in this sector to stay abreast of the technological changes and advancements. Workers should continue to upgrade and attain niche or specialised skills to serve evolving supply chain models.
