T
he fall season is quite significant for women’s health. As we focus on National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Chilton Hospital’s fifth annual Paint the Towns Pink event will once again unite the community to support The Breast Center and the 16,000 women it serves each year. Please dine and shop at the generous local businesses that have joined us in the fight against breast cancer, a disease that affects our mothers, daughters, friends and neighbors. The list of partners is found on the inside cover. Aside from healing the community, Chilton is devoted to health education. That’s why we included in this issue a special feature about breast health on page 15. The Breast Center’s Medical Director Lisa Bash, MD, provides preventative measures that every woman must know. If a diagnosis of cancer is found, Director of Breast Surgery Michelle Azu, MD, explains the compassion women receive at Chilton when undergoing this difficult time. On the lighter side of women’s health issues, it has been clinically proven that laughter and having a generally good mood has a positive impact in health. That’s why we offer a humorous dinner event for women each year. This year’s sold-out event, “Live a Little, Laugh a Lot,” will be held on October 24 at the Preakness Hills Country Club in Wayne. The hilarious Jeanne Robertson is back by popular demand. More information is on page 5. We hope you take advantage of the many New Vitality programs offered this season. We would enjoy hearing from you with suggestions for future programs so we can continue to meet your needs.

C
ancer is finally meeting its match, as it is now more treatable than ever before. Chilton Hospital has begun the next great phase of its journey toward optimal health for those affected by the disease. We recently installed a state-of-the-art “linear accelerator” at The Cancer Center as part of our modernization project to enhance our cancer services. This technology enables our highly skilled technicians to target beams of the strongest possible dose of cancer-killing radiation at tumor cells without damaging surrounding healthy tissues. Chilton has put a special focus on cancer care because we recognize the urgent need in northern New Jersey where there is a higher rate of certain cancers. In fact, a major portion of the Chilton Hospital Foundation’s $5 million Capital Campaign is earmarked for oncology. I’m proud to be part of a compassionate and generous community that has enabled us to purchase life-saving equipment and expand our cancer care services. Chilton’s dedication to oncology has earned nationwide recognition. The Cancer Center has been granted “three-year approval with commendation” from The Commission on Cancer. This is a level of certification achieved by only 27 percent of all hospitals in the country. I truly appreciate our visionary community members who support our mission of delivering technologically advanced health care, close to home.

BEATING THE ODDS FOR
BREAST CANCER
A
s we recognize National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the breast imagers at The Breast Center at Chilton Hospital – Dr. Lisa Bash, Dr. Nicole Lacz, and Dr. Denise McFadden – and fellowship-trained breast surgeon, Dr. Michelle Azu, want the community to remember that early detection saves lives. Chilton provides a full array of breast cancer services including breast imaging, breast surgical care, medical oncology and radiation oncology. The Breast Center offers a compassionate patient experience in a warm atmosphere with all members of The Breast Center equally committed to making your experience a good one. Fellowship-trained breast radiologists, perform screening and diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, and breast MRI, as well as image-guided breast needle biopsies, including ultrasound guided, MRI guided, and stereotactic core needle biopsies. The Breast Center has been designated a “Breast Imaging Center of Excellence” by the American College of Radiology. The imagers at The Breast Center work closely with Director of Breast Surgery Michelle Azu, MD. Dr. Azu performs clinical breast exams, breast surgery procedures and ultrasoundguided biopsies. Unfortunately, breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer-related deaths in women in the United States, but advances in breast cancer treatment have resulted in most women with breast cancer surviving the disease, despite the frightening statistics. According to The Breast Center’s Medical Director, Lisa Bash, MD, most women who are diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a family history. “There is no true way to prevent breast cancer, and at this point in time our best hope is for early diagnosis, which studies have shown leads to decreased mortality from breast cancer,” she said. “Since the start of screening mammography, the mortality from breast cancer has decreased by 30 percent.” The American Cancer Society and American College of Radiology recommend annual screening mammogram starting at age 40 in average risk women. Women with a family history of breast cancer in a mother or sister are advised to start screening 10 years prior to the age of their relative at the time of diagnosis. A routine screening mammogram generally consists of two views, or pictures, of each breast. “Mammography is performed using a very low dose of radiation, which is not considered to put the patient at increased risk of malignancy in the future,”
Dr. Bash explained. “In women with dense breasts, screening with breast ultrasound as an adjunct to mammography is sometimes recommended. Women with a lifetime risk of breast cancer demonstrated to be greater than 20 percent, should consider, and talk to their doctor about screening with bilateral breast MRI.” According to Dr. Bash, a very small number of women carry a genetic mutation of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene, and are at an increased risk for both breast and ovarian cancer. In these women, there are multiple family members with a history of breast and/or ovarian cancer, often at a young age. In patients who do carry the genetic mutation, there are multiple options to try to decrease their risk, including surgery and hormonal therapy. In addition, women who carry the genetic mutation, and do not opt for surgery, should be placed in high risk screening programs where they are screened with breast MRI and mammography, as well as pelvic ultrasounds. “It is important to realize that if imaging does show an abnormal finding, surgery isn’t always required,” said Michelle Azu, MD. “A needle biopsy is vital to determine the next course of action. A needle biopsy using image guidance is often the best way to perform the biopsy. It is a minimally invasive procedure where the patient can go to work or continue with her daily activities immediately following the procedure. Information from the biopsy may yield benign results or tell us more information about a cancer, which would greatly increase ability to properly plan a course of recommended treatment options.” Every breast cancer patient at Chilton receives personalized care, as studies from each individual case are reviewed by the Breast Tumor Board. This is a team of professionals, led by Dr. Azu, and includes a radiation oncologist, a nurse practitioner, radiologists, plastic surgeons, medical oncologists, social workers and pathologists. “The Breast Tumor Board session is essential because every patient is unique,” Dr. Azu explained. “We collaborate on patient care using the philosophy that breast cancer should not be treated via an autopilot approach. We review every aspect of the patient’s health including medical history, family history, features specific to the tumor and other associated factors. My goal is to make sure that patients choose the treatment decision that’s best for them.” For more information about Dr. Azu, visit www.chiltonbreast surgery.org More information about The Breast Center at Chilton can be found at www.chiltonhealth.org

LIVE LIKE YOU MEAN IT A Breast Cancer Survivor’s Empowering Journey
S
ometimes the darkest moments yield the brightest light. No one knows that better than Beth Myers, a 44-year-old Pompton Lakes resident and mother of two, who recalls the very day that altered her life forever. In August 2011, her family was enjoying a trip to the amusement park when a ride on the log flume precipitated her discovery of a breast abnormality. Just weeks after a routine visit to her gynecologist, Myers noticed a lemon-sized lump in her right breast. Suddenly, what began as a carefree summer day led to an unimaginable turn of events, along with every woman’s fear: a breast cancer diagnosis. Myers wasted no time returning to her physician, who swiftly referred her to Chilton’s Breast Center. Within days she received several diagnostic tests, including an ultrasound, mammogram and stereotactic breast biopsy, which ultimately confirmed her doctor’s suspicion. “On August 11, 2011, my soul was permanently tattooed by five words: you have invasive breast cancer,” she revealed. “I started crying immediately, as reality sunk in and created pandemonium in my life, my family, my work. Everything changed in an instant.” By her own account, the news was as surprising as it was devastating. A health professional with degrees in both nutrition and exercise physiology, Myers has passionately embraced a healthful lifestyle. “I don’t just talk the talk, I live it,” she said. “I eat right, exercise regularly and have essentially dedicated my whole life to disease prevention.” Without any known risk factors or concerning family history, Myers did not foresee a battle with breast cancer… or, as it turned out, the blessings that ensued. 16
NEW VITALITY www.chiltonhealth.org
Understandably, her diagnosis prompted a myriad of emotions as well as mounting stress and uncertainty about the road ahead. However, Myers was unwavering in her decision to remain at Chilton Hospital. “I went to New York for a second opinion, but knew that Chilton could provide the same treatment as a larger institution and was exactly where I needed to be,” she said. “Why would I travel 30 minutes to be a number, when I could stay in my own backyard and be a patient?” Enveloped by support from family, friends and colleagues, Myers was admitted to Chilton that September for a double mastectomy. “I had complete confidence in my health care team,” she asserted. “The nurses were so accommodating and sensitive to my needs and those of my family. They not only provided excellent clinical care, but also brought food and pillows for my husband, and combed my hair before my children came to visit.” Following surgery, the pathology report affirmed Stage 3B breast cancer, indicating a large, aggressive tumor as well as cancer cells in several lymph nodes. The results were disappointing, but only strengthened Myers’ resolve to conquer the disease. Under the expert care of Chilton’s Cancer Center, she and her physicians developed a personalized, comprehensive and multi-faceted treatment plan that spanned several months. While initially overwhelmed, Myers learned to focus on one step at a time and faced each challenge with courage, optimism and relentless determination. “At first, I felt like a science experiment,” acknowledged Myers. Her days were consumed by doctors’ appointments along with tremendous pain and complications following surgery. For a period of time she could not sit up, dress or even move her right arm. Her outlook changed, however, as she began physical therapy and gradually regained mobility, range

Next came 16 weeks of chemotherapy, six weeks of radiation therapy and a series of additional surgeries. It was a grueling process, but Myers forged ahead with the love of her family and faith in her medical team. “Every time I walked into Chilton’s Cancer Center, I was touched by the staff’s
encouragement, generosity and compassion. I knew I was receiving the best care and there was light at the end of the tunnel,” said Myers. “I just had to get there.” Indeed she did. Two years later, Myers is cancer-free and vigilantly monitoring her health under her doctors’ care. “I’m still fighting, and will continue to do so for a long time,” she stated. “But it’s comforting to know that Chilton’s got my back.” Furthermore, Myers appreciates an invigorated sense of purpose and enlightenment. “In the beginning I thought that having cancer was a death sentence,” she noted. On the contrary, Myers now believes that her life is richer and more blessed because of her experience. “This journey has given me the chance to learn, grow and teach my children to live like they mean it.” “I’m not defined or defeated by cancer,” added Myers. “I’m empowered by it. I feel like I can conquer anything!” NEW VITALITY www.chiltonhealth.org

Avoiding Breast Cancer
THROUGH NUTRITION lthough there is no silver bullet to completely avoid breast cancer, it’s clinically proven that a healthy diet can help lower your risk. Chilton Hospital’s Clinical Nutrition Manager Samantha Gallo, MS, RD, CDN, CDE, provides some valuable information on this subject… How does a healthy diet help lower one’s risk of breast cancer? “It is well established that a healthy diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and biologically active compounds have the potential to inactivate carcinogens, protect cells from DNA damage, and contain antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.” What fruits and vegetables do you recommend? “Fruits and vegetables are categorized into five subgroups of dark green, red and orange, beans and peas, starchy and other vegetables. Higher consumption of vegetables including cruciferous green vegetables has been associated with these biologically active compounds and disease protection. These cruciferous vegetables include spinach, broccoli, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, collard greens, kale

and more. Additionally carotenoids, the compound found in red and orange fruits and vegetables is thought to be protective against breast cancer. These fruits and vegetables include carrots, strawberries, tomatoes and sweet potatoes.” Is there anything else to know about nutrition and cancer prevention? “It is important to note that it is a combination of phytochemicals from whole foods in a plant based diet that is thought to play a role in cancer prevention and total body health. One food or a single supplement is not thought to be solely effective in cancer deterrence.”
Strawberry Spinach Salad
Here is a delicious recipe developed by Sodexo (Chilton’s food service contractor), to incorporate both dark green vegetables and red fruits in your daily life: Ingredients: Raw Walnuts (2 tablespoons) Fresh Spinach (3 cups) Fat Free Raspberry Vinaigrette (1 ounce) Fresh Strawberries (1/3 cup) Preparation: 1. Combine spinach, strawberries, walnuts, and fat free raspberry vinaigrette in a bowl and toss to evenly coat. 2. Arrange on a plate and serve immediately.
