Comparison between berry and cluster sampling for Brix (sugar concentration) and berry fresh mass Syrah, 08 August 2018 Alain Deloire, [email protected] About grapevine sampling!

Loose or compact bunches? Vineyard homogeneity/heterogeneity? Cluster homogeneity/heterogeneity? What to sample: berries or clusters? I did it for you! I compared berry fresh mass and Brix (sugar concentration) of 10 clusters sampled at random (figure 1) and groups of berries sampled at random over 30 bunches (top, middle and bottom of the bunches) (figure 2). The variety is Shiraz from Montpellier SupAgro experimental vineyard, trained in Lyre. Preliminary Results (From 08 August 2018!): - average Brix from the berries (224 fruits): 18,2 - average Brix from the 10 clusters (around 891 fruits): 17,9 Average berry fresh mass for both: 1,6 g. Take home message: When appropriate it makes sense to sample clusters to follow vineyard ripening. It is less time consuming and could be more appropriate for grapevine varieties having compact bunches! Obviously the choice is yours, depending on the goals (what to achieve).
