Human Rights Campaign Approximate mini quilt size with borders is 20” x 22” 1

Materials Seam allowance is 1/4” . Various colored 2 1/2” strips (I used scraps from a jelly roll by Kona in Bright). You need about 16” of each color: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. 1/2 yard Kona white batting 24” x 24” binding

Cutting 1. Cut two sets of strips from the orange, yellow, green, and blue at 2 1/2” x 5 1/2”. These will be sections A & B. 2. Cut 2 1/2” x 1 1/4” strips from these same colors. (C) 3. Cut two 2 1/2” x 8 5/8” strips from Kona white. (D & E) 4. From red and purple cut one strip of each color at 2 1/2” x 14 3/4”. 5. Cut borders in white at: two sets of 4 1/2” x 13” (F) and two at 4 1/2” x 23” (G). 6. Cut batting at 24” x 24” approx and also backing if you wish to at this time.

Sewing 1. Sew the orange, yellow, green, and blue strips (2 1/2” x 5 1/2”) together along the long edges to create a panel in rainbow order. (Piece A.) Repeat for the second set. (Piece B.) These will be the top and bottom sections . Set aside.

Make one. 2 1/2” x 1 1/4” 3. Take one white strip of 2 1/2” x 8 5/8” (D) and place it right sides together with the piece A. Sew along the long edge to form the first equal bar. (See dashed line in photo.) Press this seam to set stitches, then open & press again.

4. Place piece C right sides together with the remaining edge of piece D, and sew along the long edge to encase the first equal bar in rainbow strips. Open and press well.

5. Place piece E right sides together with the remaining open edge of piece C, pin in place and sew along this edge. Press well. In order to align the strips exactly right, I like to use a pencil and extend the seam line down so I can place the seams exactly where they should be. Pin and sew, the press. (See my faint lines in the photo.)

6. Place piece B right sides together with this remaining open edge of piece E and pin in place, sew along the edge. Press. Now both equal sign bars should be surrounded by rainbow strips. See Illustration. Trim to even up edges and clean piece up. 7. Attach the red and purple strips by placing right sides together with completed equal sign portion and pin and sew carefully. Press seams. Trim/clean up edges for border attachment.

9. Make quilt sandwich with batting and backing. Quilt as desired. I used a walking foot and made straight lines both vertically and horizontally. 10. Attach binding as you prefer. I machine bind, for ease and speed.
