Luke R Davies is a blues / folk and country roots performer based in Wangaratta. He writes songs that speak to an Australian landscape, its conditions and culture. Luke was award the National Film & Sound Archive of Australia National Folk Recording Award 2013 for his CD Luke R Davies and the Recycled String Band “not a note wasted”. He plays mean blues guitar and ukulele, soul filled blues harmonica and delivers his songs with a voice that is at once laconic and deeply affecting. What sets Luke apart from other performers is that he also makes and plays several home made instruments fashioned from recycled materials that always enthral an audience. Luke has being performing as a solo artist or with his amazing Recycled String Band along with teaching and conducting workshops for many years at community colleges and folk festivals. He now brings his experience and skill set to schools with a range of programs to suit both primary and high schools.

Luke R Davies music programs for primary schools Recycle and Reuse music show Luke displays and plays a wide variety of string instruments used in his Recycled String Band that are built from recycled and reused materials. Songs included in the show are about the environment. Children are encouraged to have fun, sing a long or play some recycled percussion. The message in this show is about making things oneself and highlighting issues around recycling, environment and sustainability. The show is suitable for all grades of primary school. Costs - $5.00 per head GST inclusive Min costs - $120 Numbers of students - min 10 / max 60 per session, more than one session per day is ok. Stories into song Song writing in the class: turning stories into simple songs. The ideas and themes for the songs can come from what is being discussed already in class or any topic the teacher may think appropriate. The process of writing the song will include students and the teacher. Once the song is written and the class is singing it well enough, a recording will be made of the song at school using Luke’s audio equipment and software. The sessions aim to encourage and improve many skills via song writing such as literacy, numeracy, communication, music knowledge, imagination and social science awareness in a fun an entertaining way. This process would be undertaken over 3 hours and structured to suit your group’s needs i.e. 3 x 60min sessions or in larger time blocks if that is preferred by the school. Sessions can be arranged for all grades of primary school. Costs - $325 GST inclusive per group with finished CD recording of song extra CD’s available $5 each or a free digital download. Luke R Davies music programs & workshops for high schools Stories into songs Song writing workshop in a group or class that focuses on ways of turning stories into songs. Or expressing oneself via a song format. The ideas and themes for the songs can come from what is being discussed already in class or any topic the teacher may think appropriate. The process of writing songs will be discussed and explored with students and teachers. Music knowledge is not essential as the focus will be on lyric writing firstly and then the elements of song structure. The workshop aims to encourage and improve many skills via song writing such as literacy, numeracy, communication, music knowledge, imagination and social science awareness in a fun an entertaining way.

Build a stringed instrument from recycled and reused materials Make a 3 string biscuit tin blues machine or a cigar box guitar or maybe a ukulele. A workshop where students design and then build their own simple instrument that will look cool and sound good. This workshop would be suitable for all students where there is an industrial arts / woodworking facilities. Costs - $50 per student/instrument, all materials supplied $10 - per student if school/students source materials. Help and direction in this is free.
