RJW- 001 Material Detail Sheets for Tron-Flex elastomeric concrete as manufactured by R. J. Watson, Inc. Prepared for the New York State Dept. of Transportation I.

Substrate Preparation a. Method of Cleaning Prior to the placement of the elastomeric concrete, the method of cleaning for a concrete or steel substrate shall be shotblasting, or sandblasting. The blockout should be blown clean with dry, oil free compressed air. b. The level of cleanliness The degree of cleanliness is such that no deleterious matter is to be left on the surface including residual curing compound, laitance, oils or other that could prevent bonding to the concrete surface. In the case of a steel deck, the finish is to be SSP 10 and must be done such that the steel primer can be applied within 4-6 hours of the surface preparation. The steel surface must be devoid of any mill scale, rust or oil that could prevent proper bonding of the elastomeric concrete. c. Moisture Content of PCC (Max.) The surface of the concrete must be dry to the touch (approximately 5 ½ % moisture content using a Tramix Concrete Moisture Encounter moisture meter other as approved by manufacturer. Various moisture meters will provide different readings on the same area of concrete and therefore other meters must have been previously calibrated by the manufacturer.

Elastomeric Concrete Preparation a. Storage and Handling Keep containers closed and stored in a dry, well ventilated area at 60°-100°F (15°-38°C). Containers must be stored out of direct sunlight.

b. Weather Limitations (temperature and humidity) Air temperature must be 40°F (5°C) and rising during the installation of Tron-Flex. The surface of the blockout must be surface dry. Tron-Flex may be installed at any humidity level. To avoid condensation on the surface, it is recommended that the air/surface temperature must be at least 3° above the dew point temperature. c. Protection of Traffic, Workers, Environment and Adjacent Features Workers to follow safety instructions indicated in MSDS sheets with respect to health and safety equipment. d. Application Rate The application rate for Tron-Flex varies depending on the size and depth of the blockout. e. Reactivity with non-cementitous patching materials (magnesium Phosphate, etc.) Pure cementitous and latex modified cementitous materials are compatible. Also, mortars based on epoxy and polyurethane are acceptable. Products having any other basis such as magnesium phosphate, should be submitted for review, prior to use. f. Deficiency Repairs 1. If finished material bloom’s, the surface of the Tron-Flex elastomeric concrete can be ground to proper grade elevation. 2. Shortage Deficiency – To form a marriage, sandblast bonding edges to expose aggregate and continue pour at butt edge. III.

Elastomeric Concrete Application a. Priming Fully mix components A & B of the Tron-Flex primer in a small clean pail. This process should take less than one minute. Brush a coat of primer on all surfaces that will come in contact with elastomeric concrete material. Do not let the primer puddle under any circumstances. Allow the primer to achieve a tacky-dry feel before application of the elastomeric concrete. This process should take approximately 20-30 minutes (@ 70°F or 21°C). The primer may be allowed to dry longer, but the elastomeric concrete must be placed within 3 hours of priming. Otherwise, it will be necessary to physically abrade

the surface and re-prime with a 1:1 mixture of Tron-Flex primer and MEK. b.

Mixing (A&B) of Tron-Flex Elastomeric Concrete Begin with one clean empty 22 liter bucket. Pour the elastomeric concrete liquid components A & B into the empty bucket. Mix the two units together using a ¾” (19mm) variable speed drill with a mixing paddle for no more than 5 seconds. Gradually add in all of the pre-measure aggregate while continuously mixing. Once all of the aggregate has been added to the liquid, mix just long enough to ensure that there are no dry pockets for approximately 1 minute. Be sure not to overmix the Tron-Flex elastomeric concrete as it can shorten the material’s pot life.

c.

Placement Once mixed, immediately pour the material into the blockout and trowel smooth.

d.

Curing Time Tron-Flex elastomeric concrete will cure and can be open to traffic in the following time intervals: • At 40°F (5°C) the cure time is approximately 4 hours. • At 50°F (10°C) the cure time is approximately 3 hours, 30 minutes. • At 60°F (16°C) the cure time is approximately 3 hours. • At 70°F (21°C) the cure time is approximately 2 hours, 30 minutes. • At 80°F (27°C) the cure time is approximately 1 hour, 30 minutes. • At 90°F (32°C) the cure time is approximately 1 hour.

Clean Up Properly dispose of all empty containers. Clean equipment with a solvent, such as acetone.
