Outline of Presentation • Two charges from the Board: Open two middle schools/envision new middle grades model • Identify what middle grades components and experiences will occur (minimally) in Harriet Tubman & Roseway Heights starting in 2018-19 • Deeper dive into new middle grade framework • Review the communication plan to include process for community input • Questions and Discussion

Two Charges In order to meet equitable programming goal: • Open 2 middle schools: Tubman and Roseway Heights • Envision an exemplary PPS middle grade model: for students grades 4-10

 

Opening Tubman and Roseway Heights Work to Date: ● Assessments of Harriet Tubman and Roseway Heights ● Analysis and prioritization of resources across 26 departments ● Creation of timelines (Gantt Chart) and alignment of department work plans ● Preliminary Budget ● Development of protocols for implementation

Work that lies ahead • Hire “planning” principals • Community engagement • Facilities upgrades • Board approval of feeder patterns

Envisioning Exemplary Middle Grades Programming Work to Date:

• Compiled research • Compiled inventory of current PPS practice • Received input to refine framework • Incorporated Stage One input into the details for each framework component

Key next steps on middle grade programming • Create implementation plan and complete a curriculum/program review of all areas in the framework • Convene committees to define exemplary practice in each area: – Solicit and form committee membership for each task/component and assign lead – Brainstorm and craft program/components – Create evaluation rubrics against those program elements

Community Engagement Plan • Goal: Ensure stakeholders have opportunities to provide meaningful input and feel a sense of ownership. • Who: Teachers; administrators; school and district staff; families and students in affected schools; community organizations; others. • How: Series of town-hall listening sessions with Middle School Implementation Team. Meetings will be led by external facilitators.

Engagement Continued... • Online comments: Website will be set up to take comments or surveys. • Follow-up: Results of listening sessions analyzed, reported out to stakeholders. • Media engagement: Sessions open to media; every effort made to provide accurate, balanced information. • Board updates: Results of listening sessions will be provided to the board.

Communications Plan • Goal: Ensure all stakeholders are kept informed and up-to-date on progress • How: Regular progress reports that briefly detail: 1) Latest developments; 2) Progress to date; 3) What’s coming up; 4) How to get involved • Who: Emailed in easy-to-read format to PPS Board; teachers and administrators; school and district staff; PAT, PAPSA, PFSP, SEIU and other organizations; Central Office admin.
