Thought Leader Poverty News
Technology will not save the world. We will... This is the title of an article by Jonathan Margolis in the September 4th issue of The Financial Times. He goes onto say that, "technology is marvelous but... the ideas to deliver it's benefits through innovations like refrigeration and the like could only spring from human empathy and creativity." The same applies to industry and it's potential application to lift the livelihoods of the poor by employing it's various wheelhouses to develop sustainable solutions to poverty eradication. That is, as opposed to the delegation of this mission to unsustainable governments or NGOs. (Unsustainable here meaning a lack of financial inclusion by way of one-way charitable donations that also are not always properly allocated.) Business can only accomplish this through the human empathy and the creativity of both its leadership and its employees. Nothing short of this will do. Not charity but inclusive capitalism, the empathetic and innovative type. - Marc Marc Blumenthal CEO, Social Ventures Foundation

Scales for Market Accountability
University of Pennsylvania
The people of Ghana are being cheated in their market places. Without government regulations on proper scale calibration (or access to scales in general) customers are unable to check that they are getting what they pay for. In a letter sent last month to their government, several disgruntled citizens requested a strict implementation of a regulatory system. The Social Ventures Foundation thinks this is a prime opportunity for a startup to source and design cheap but efficient scales for use in Ghanaian markets.
