President’s Message

With a fun-filled semester coming to a close, it’s a great time to look back at the friends and memories we made in Badger Dairy Club. Soon after classes began in September, we held our annual BDC Student/Faculty Mixer. We had a record number of people show up to mingle and enjoy free grilled burgers and hot dogs. Be sure to check out some pictures of the Mixer in the Photo Gallery. For so many people in the dairy industry, October means one thing, World Dairy Expo. For BDC, World Dairy Expo work starts several weeks earlier than when cattle first arrive on grounds. 97 of our members logged hours and our club reached nearly 5000 hours this year! After everything was cleaned up and put away from Expo, BDC took a bus to Toronto for the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. We had several very impressive farm tours on the way. Smithden, Maple Wood, and Quality were gracious enough to show us around. The Royal gives members a chance to see one of the best shows in the world and make international acquaintances. We had many members experience success on dairy judging teams this fall. UW-Madison was represented in Harrisburg, Viroqua, Louisville, and of course Madison at World Dairy Expo. I want to take this opportunity to thank the rest of the officer team for a great semester. Badger
Dairy Club would not be the same without our fantastic members. I also want to thank our new on-campus advisor, Laura Hernandez and our off-campus advisors Liz Matzke and Susan Orth who were always there to provide support for our club. I plan on graduating in May, so I am sad to say that this was my last fall semester as a Badger Dairy Club member. In the spring semester, we will be hosting the 16th Badger Invitational, attending the ADSA-SAD conference in Ames at Iowa State University, a Brewer game, and our spring banquet. Advisor’s Message Another fall is upon us. For most University of Wisconsin-Madison students it signals the beginning of a new semester – and that means Badger Football home games and Halloween on State Street. Traditions for all Badgers! For the Badger Dairy Club, the fall time brings other traditions. BDC kicked off the new school year with a cookout and mixer. There were new faces and old friends. The UW-Madison judging team also began the fall with several competitions, placing second at Harrisburg and Madison and turning in equally impressive efforts in oral reasons. Badgers also remained strong at the Accelerated Genetics Contest and continued their dominance in oral reasons. Congratulations to coaches Brian Kelroy and Chad Wethal on a great year. The biggest tradition for the Badger Dairy Club is being the behindthe-scenes crew at World Dairy Expo. This year, BDC logged an impressive 4,400 hours! They also managed to serve a record number of their world-famous grilled cheese sandwiches – 22,777. Our sincere thanks to all Badger Dairy Club members who help to make World Dairy Expo such a success! As the leaves and temperatures drop, another tradition happens, the annual trip to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. As advisors, we are continually impressed on the professionalism and respect Badger Dairy Club members show the farms we visit and the people they meet in Canada. Finally, the club wrapped up the year with their Christmas Party. It is a time to celebrate all the accomplishments of the club and plan for a busy spring. 16th Badger Invitational Sale The Badger Dairy Club will once again be hosting The Badger Invitational this spring. March 9th, 2013 will mark the 16th edition of the sale, which continually ranks as one of the highest averaging University club sales in the nation. Plans are already underway by the chair people for this year, who include: General- Jacob Brey Selections- Cara Biely, Hayden Hauschildt, Mitch Kappelman, Austin Schmidt & Nick Schuster Cattle Care- Laura Finley, Carrie Warmka & Ryan Oleary Advertising- Lauren Holterman Catalog- Breinne Hendrickson Special Events- Christine McFarland & Kaitlyn Riley We are currently looking for donations and/or potential consignments! World Dairy Expo World Dairy Expo 2012 “Market Fresh” was a record-setting year in many ways. Along with record attendance, Badger Dairy Club worked more hours and sold more grilled cheese sandwiches than ever before. It was also a year that I will never forget as General Chairman. We faced many challenges this year, and proudly overcame them. We were without one of our showring chairs and one of our grounds chairs for several days leading up to the show because they were on judging teams and were not allowed to be on grounds until after the contest. Our other showring chair missed time due to a severe case of appendicitis (Glad he’s okay!). I have to thank our other chairs and members who stepped up to the plate to fill their shoes while they couldn’t be with us. I want to thank Co-General Chair, and General next year Jordan Haelfrisch for taking the reigns when I was in the showring or in class. Grounds chairs Tom Zwald and Ryan O’Leary did a great job on grounds setting up gates, keeping the grounds clean during the week, and cleaning everything out after the show. Storage chairs Ryan Horsens and Erin Kappelman, were ahead of schedule moving items to and from the warehouse and dutifully kept magazine and newspaper racks full. Showring chairs Carrie Warmka and Ryan Pralle built one of the more elaborate showring designs that I remember with a cornucopia made of a couple hundred boards.

Milkhouse chairs Andrew Zwald and Kim Kester did a great job working with exhibitors to get their cows milked and picking up pails of milk all over the grounds on milk runs. Cheese Stand chairs Jordan Riley and Susie Hodgson sold a record number of grilled cheese sandwiches and are making plans to upgrade the Cheese Stand for next year. None of this would be possible without our Business chairs, Cassie Mayer and Michele Gutenberger who gave rides to and from campus for all of our members and recorded everyone’s hours. Lastly, I want to thank everyone on the WDE staff for the guidance in this record-setting year. Badger Dairy Club Cheese Stand With a combination of new products, great weather, and a lot of help from BDC members, the BDC Cheese Stand had its most successful year on record. This year, the cheese stand broke its record from last year by making more than 22,777 grilled cheese sandwiches. Each year, Badger Dairy Club runs a Cheese Stand at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisc. The menu consists of American and Swiss grilled cheese sandwiches, chocolate shakes, milk, and orange juice. For only the second time, BDC sold grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. Helping with the year’s success were SCR Dairy and Pfizer Animal Health, as the 2012 sponsors. Dairy Judging All-American Dairy Judging Contest- Harrisburg, PA UW-Madison and Badger Dairy Club were well represented at the All-American Dairy Judging contest in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The team consisted of members Jake Brey, Ryan O’Leary, Hayden Hauschildt, and Abbey Wethal. They were 2nd high team overall and 2nd high team in reasons. Additionally, they were 1st in Holsteins, 3rd in Brown Swiss, and 4th in Ayrshires. Individually, Jake was 6th high individual and 4th in Holsteins. Hayden was 7th high individual overall and 1st in Guernseys. Abbey was the 14th high individual, 2nd in Holsteins, and 4th in reasons. She also received the only 50 of anyone in the contest on her reasons. Ryan was the 17th high individual overall and 2nd in Guernseys. -Ryan O’Leary
North American Livestock Exposition- Louisville, KY On November 4, 2012, Cara Biely, Brienne Hendrickson, Kaitlin Gelsinger, and Mitch Kappelman, members of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Dairy Judging Team, competed in the Dairy Judging Competition at the North American International Livestock Exposition. The competitors judged ten classes of cows and heifers and then gave five sets of oral reasons. There was a heifer class and a cow class of each breed and one set of reasons per breed. Gelsinger was third high individual in Brown Swiss, fifth high individual in Ayrshire and seventh high individual in reasons, resulting in tenth high individual overall. Kappelman was fifth in the Guernsey breed. Overall, the team placed eleventh. Also attending the contest were two Farm and Industry Short Course students, Austen Schmidt and Bret Long. Schmidt placed sixth individually in reasons and fourth individually overall in the Post-Secondary division. -Kaitlin Gelsinger

Dairy Judging Accelerated Genetics Intercollegiate Dairy Judging Contest- Viroqua, WI Seven members of the UW-Madison Collegiate Dairy Judging Team represented Madison at the 2012 Accelerated Genetics Intercollegiate Dairy Judging Contest. Team Cardinal, coached by Chad Wethal and Brian Kelroy, placed fourth in a competitive contest with team members Mackenzie Nickels, Cassie Endres, Laura Finley, and Anna Blake. Team Cardinal was second high team overall in oral reasons with Cassie Endres taking top reasons individual honors. Mariah Fjarle and Mackenzie Nickels also placed fifth and tenth respectively. The team also placed first in the Jersey breed. Team White represented UW-Madison as well with team members Mariah Fjarle, Kaitlin Gelsinger, and Melissa Vandersanden. 17 teams from around the country competed in the contest. Contestants judged 10 classes at the contest, which takes place during the Vernon County Fair in Viroqua, Wisconsin every September. -Cassie Endres
National Collegiate Judging Contest- Madison, WI October 1st marked the 92nd National Collegiate Judging Contest held at the 2012 World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI. For seniors Jacob Brey, Ryan O’Leary, Abbey Wethal, and Hayden Hauschildt it was the pinnacle of their judging career. The contest had many highlights for this Madison team including placing 1st in Milking Shorthorns, 2nd in Guernseys, Jerseys, Holsteins, Red and White Holsteins, reasons, and overall. There was also much individual success with Abbey Wethal placing 2nd in guernseys, 3rd in Milking Shorthorns, 10th in reasons, and 5th overall. Jacob Brey was 4th in Jerseys, 8th in Milking Shorthorns, and 6th overall. Ryan O’Leary was 10th in Milking Shorthorns, and Hayden Hauschildt was 7th in Guernseys, 6th in Jerseys, 1st in Red and White Holsteins, Milking Shorthorns, Holsteins, and reasons, and 2nd overall. Coaches Brian Kelroy and Chad Wethal were pleased with the results and looking forward to coach the team at their last contest in Fort Worth, Texas. -Hayden Hauschildt

Royal Agricultural Winter Fair The Royal Winter Fair was a huge success, as it is most years! On the way up to Toronto we stopped and visited Smithden Holsteins in Woodstock, ON where we say offspring from the great Alison family. Then we traveled about an hour to Mapel Wood Holsteins, there were two other visits there when we arrived so we had the pleasure of walking around their facilities and checking out all their calves, yearlings, dry cows and then the amazing herd of cows still available after their Genetics by Design sale that averaged $27,666. After touring Mapel Wood and having many questions about their breeding protocol, their partnerships and a few prospect cows we headed for Toronto! A few of us went to the Sale of the Stars, which is an amazing sale to watch with type and genomic animals. Others toured Toronto or met up with friends in the barns. The next morning we arrived at the grounds for the one and only Holstein Show! It was a phenomenal heifer show, resulting with MD-Dun Loafin Elli-ET being Junior Champion owned by Michael Heath and Dave Dyment. We went onto the cow show where the senior three, Cookview Goldwyn Monique, was Intermediate Champion owned by Jeff Butler and Joe and Amber Price. The one and only RF Goldwyn Hailey ended up Grand Champion, which most saw coming. After Grand we all headed back to get dinner and clean up after a long day of spectating and some helping in show strings. That night we all celebrated Hailey’s accomplishment in the Gen-Com/Budjon aisle! The next morning we came back to the

ground to watch the Jersey Show, once again the quality of animals were outstanding and the JC was from the Arethusa string, Tierney’s Tequila Linda Lou, owned by Ernie Kueffner, Terri Packard and Callum McKinven. Jeff Stephens, the judge said “The Junior Yearling will be your Junior Champion, she’s exceptional from end to end and showing a little more strength through the chine today as well as being a little more square in the rump over the Summer Yearling who will be Reserve.” The Intermediate Champion is one of the best young cows I have ever seen, she was bred by Derek Page of Missouri but now, Page-Crest Excitation Karlie, is owned by Aaron Eaton, Piggot Farms and Martin Croft. She went on to be the Reserve Grand Champion. She will be selling in the Franchise Kind Spring Sale being managed by Aaron Eaton and Dusty Shirm, she’s a great young cow! The Grand Champion Jersey was Arethusa Response Vivid owned by Arethusa Farms. Stephens said, “Give me wow factor, angularity, dairyness and openess of rib that carry them through the class along with great mammary systems. Grand and Reserve will be our top 2 best udders. Longer from end to end, higher chine and more style then our well balanced young cow, the Intermediate champion who will be your reserve.” Saturday night we all enjoyed celebrating the Supreme and Reserve Supreme Champions, the Grand Jersey and all the friends we made at the Royal!
