Dear Friends, This is a time of change at First Presbyterian Church…. … we are in the process of changing seasons – both liturgical and natural; … we are in the process of changing staff (and will honor Leanne’s ministry with us Nov. 5); … we are the in process of changing aspects of the physical environment of the church; … we are in the process of reflecting about the future. Pray and work…..I was in a conversation with Holly Rudolf and Tom Russell recently and they were sharing about the time they were deeply involved in a Benedictine community and that even though the community is becoming smaller (as so many churches are becoming smaller) their calling doesn’t change.

They pray….and they work (serve, practice hospitality, etc.) I know we are at times concerned here at First Presbyterian Church about our future, but I believe our call is also the same…pray…and serve. I have been thinking about the upcoming Advent season and how busy and “full of things” the advent season can be. And yet…..what we often would like is simply time and space to “Pray and serve.” I know that praying is one of the “missing pieces” in so many of our lives. This Advent Season there will be opportunities to learn a style of prayer called “centering prayer.” We will share more about this “way of praying” in the next few weeks. Our world is so chaotic right now as is our nation, perhaps this is the time to listen for God, listen to the still small voice. Peace – Krista

Thanks from Jerry First Presbyterian Church has a history of celebrating things “Decently and in Good Order.” That certainly happened on September 17 when you created a fantastic day of worship and reception in honor of my retirement as Director of Music after almost 43 years. From the spine-tingling voice of Jim Pallone and accompanying Bill McMurray at the organ to the humbling words of Pastor Krista, Cheryl Rasmussen, and Pastor Emeritus John D. Watson and the presentation of an astounding gift from the congregation, and the splendid cake, treats, and effusive thanks to me from the congregation and area people who attended the reception, it was a very meaningful day for me and my family. I give immense thanks from me to those mentioned above and to Diane Watson who coordinated the reception and the many others who helped her. In addition, Diane created a book for me containing letters and cards from many former piano students and choir members as well as members of the congregation and from my first piano teacher!

Many of you gave me cards personally with cash gifts who I will give personal thanks. For those sending cash gifts to the church, I cannot give personal thanks because I do not know the names of those who contributed, but please know that your contributions are greatly appreciated. Joanne and I have set the amount aside in order to have a stupendous adventure in the future. From the age of 16 when I was a college freshman, I worked at seven churches as choir director, organist, or both. We moved here when I was 30 and after spending weekends for two years with my wife and very young daughter, I accepted the position at our church with “an offer I could not refuse!” As most of you know, I only intended to stay a year or two, but your great appreciation of quality worship music and wonderful choirs (not to mention the dangling prospect of a new organ which took us 15 years to obtain, but is so magnificent that it was worth the wait) made me want to remain in the position as long as possible. I truly love our church and the congregation who has been so wonderful to me!

Soli Dei gloria! Jerry L. Anderson Emeritus Director of Music (organist/choirmaster)

He’s a music man In mid-October, the church was introduced to the newest member of the church, Dr. Paul Hindemith. Paul is no stranger to the church as he has been a choir member for over a year. He is director of the vocal studies program at MWSU. Vocal music is not his only enthusiasm. Paul has just finished working on the production of School House Rock Live! last month on the campus. This semester he is teaching a class

in Pedalogical Practices: Voice and Applied Voice. While his career started as a teacher in his home city of Omaha, his career has given him experience in music from classic to pop. His resume includes musical experiences in all parts of the country. An invitation from Jerry Anderson to join FPC’s choir when he first arrived on campus brought him to us as a member of the bass section. In his spare time, he enjoys gardening, spending time with his husband Fred and his cats Figaro, Timonium and Josephine. Welcome to the FPC family, Paul!
