nyone who has either read the book or seen the film Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone will be familiar with the name of Nicholas Flamel. He is not, however, a fictional character, but

seems to have been a real person (although references to him are scarce,) living in France between 1330 and possibly 1418. Whilst on the road to the holy shrine at Santiago de Compostela in

He also wrote a number of books on magic and alchemy, one of which appeared in London in 1624 entitled Exposition of the Hierographical Figures and reputedly contained instructions for the creation of the Stone. Although the date of Flamel’s death is usually given as 1418, nobody is really sure when he died. Legend says that a grave robber broke into his tomb in order to steal gold which had been reputedly buried with him, and found it empty. Since then there have been many sightings claimed. He was alleged to have been seen at a theater in Paris around 1776 and in London during World War I. Some believe he is still living today. Perhaps the Philosopher’s Stone has made him immortal. Who knows?
