November 2011

Artist of the Month Julie McCollum Julie McCollum developed a love of watercolor in college, from a favorite class and instructor at Kansas State University. Her work also included oils, sculpture and some pottery, but experimenting with the transparency of watercolor combined with mixed media, collage and some calligraphy allows her to take a favorite subject and paint it in a very unique way.

Julie, who resides on Canyon Lake in the beautiful Hill Country of Texas, is a member of the Texas Watercolor Society, San Antonio Art League, New Braunfels Art League and the River Art Group. She has received awards from Alaska, Georgia, Kansas and Texas Watercolor Societies. Julie is active in local art shows and her work is represented by the New Braunfels Art League, the Gallerie at Gruene, and NanEtte Richardson Fine Art in San Antonio. “I have been painting and drawing ever since I can remember. I cannot imagine not creating, painting, or exploring art. Every painting presents unique challenges and opportunities, but when all is said and done, painting is a real joy.”

NOVEMBER DEMONSTRATOR MICHELLE ROBINSON, CZT I am a Texasbased Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) who specializes in Zentangle Inspired Art. Zentangle is best described as an easy to learn method of creating beautiful images using repetitive patterns. I discovered the Zentangle® Method while leafing through a Cloth, Paper, Scissors Magazine in 2009; the doodling caught my eye and I was immediately inspired to grab a pencil to draw the patterns on my paper. In 2010, I traveled to Whitinsville, Mass. to meet the founders of Zentangle, Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas and complete the Certified Zentangle Training Program. For the demonstration you will need White Paper, Black Gel Pen (i.e.: Sakura .05, Uniball), Pencil and sharpener. Zentangle is art for everyone. No previous art training or artistic ability is required. The Zentangle® Method is an easy to learn method of creating beautiful images using repetitive patterns. Images created in this way allow you to nurture your creative spirit in a fun and relaxing manner. I will share the history and theories of Zentangle while I demonstrate a number of tangles aka patterns. I will also bring my display of artwork, official Zentangle product, and Zentangle Inspired Art projects. In mid-August 2010, I donated my time to tangle a chair for a local charity, Arts from the Heart, Silent Auction. My art work “Pea Soup” in the form of an ATC was published in the Zentangle 5 book by Suzanne McNeil, CZT. I can be seen demonstrating a favorite tangle variation called “Monster Teeth” on YouTube – Zentangle® CZT Marketing Retreat in Texas. I teach private and group workshops to adults and children in the beautiful hill country. For more information you can visit my new blog, michellerobinson.biz.

NOW IS TIME TO CHANGE WORK DAYS

Now is the time to express your wish to change work days.  If you have a desire to work a specific day of the month next year,  check the schedule to solicit those presently scheduled on that day.  Perhaps one of those might trade, or wish to move to a different day. Those who have accomplished a change will notify me by December 15 at the latest at darryllpatrick@ gmail.com or by phone at 830 899-5783. Many thanks for keeping the gallery open, you are the heart of the operation. Darryl Patrick: Gallery Staffing.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROJECT The NBAL Eden Hill project has a team of 7 volunteers and we go to the Eden Hill Alzheimer’s unit every Tuesday to have art sessions. We could use another volunteer or two, as we take turns, but we generally need three people per session as some of the patients need one on one help. It is not difficult at all and we all find it very rewarding-the patients are very pleasant and appreciative.  If you’re interested, please call Sheila Orr at 830-625-0839 or drop a line at nborrs@ satx.rr.com. Hope Hospice is also beginning a program “Art for Alzheimer’s”, a similar program began in October.  They are planning on having volunteers visit the other nursing homes in town on a rotating basis twice a month. Volunteers would need to attend a shortened version of Hospice training before joining this worthwhile venture. If you’re interested in this, please call Amy Gilbertson at Hope Hospice – 625-7500. Thank you, Sheila Orr

Wassailfest is on Thursday, December 1

Don’t forget that Wassailfest is on Thursday, December 1, 5-8PM. It is a really fun time but we need lots of volunteers! Be prepared to come and work but smile a lot too! Volunteers will need to sign up on the list in the kitchen area (soon to be put up) and also sign up to bring store bought cookies; lots and lots of store bought cookies, please. We served almost 2,000 (yes, two thousand!) thirsty Wassailfest adventurers last year so there will be plenty of need for volunteers. See you there.
