NOVEMBER 2017

We are delighted to report that once again, Gleneagles is having an incredible year in real estate and membership sales. We are expecting at least 75 transactions to close before the end of the fiscal year on October 31. A big thank you to our members for making this year so successful. The Budget Process began in July with the Leadership staff working on budgets. Budgets were presented by the Leadership staff to the Budget and Finance Committee over a two day period in October. The Budget and Finance committee deliberated and provided recommendations to the Board of Governors. The Board will review the Budget and Finance Committee recommendations and ratify the proposed budget at the October Board meeting. A comprehensive dues brochure will be enclosed with your October 31 club statement to outline the 2017-2018 Budget. We urge you to review this brochure and to let us know if you have any questions. We are pleased to introduce a new member of our team: Marlene Drolet, our new Office Manager. Marlene came to Gleneagles after more than ten years at Sailfish Club in Palm Beach. Marlene will be working closely with the General Manager and the Board of Governors. Roundtable meetings will be held frequently throughout the season and are open to any member who wishes to attend. Roundtable meetings encourage communication between the Board, Management team, and Membership, and are a wonderful way to find out about all of the latest news around the club. You may sign up for an upcoming roundtable by calling Marlene Drolet at 498-3606 ext. 131 or e-mail to [email protected].

Respectfully yours,

Richard North, Board President Kraig Spina, General Manager

BOOK CLUB

It is hard to believe that we are starting another wonderful season at Gleneagles! We are very excited for all of the events and programs to resume for the season. Members should have received their Social Calendars in early October. The Social Calendar is not only a lovely book to portray our wonderful lifestyle at Gleneagles, but also an informative resource providing all of the information needed to participate in all of the social, enrichment, and special event holiday celebrations. Thanksgiving will be the culinary highlight of the month and will once again feature an elaborate buffet with seating available from 2:00-7:00 pm. Reservations will be available by phone starting on October 23. We look forward to celebrating with your families once again this year. It is my pleasure to introduce the annual update of the Eagle newsletter this month. The new design and format will take us through the next season with some design changes, as well as a few new content contributors. I am excited to introduce a monthly article from Executive Chef Jeff Terentieff called Chef’s Corner (page 10), that will provide an overview of the culinary highlights of the month,

inspiration behind the menu, and answers to frequently asked questions. The dining menu information (page 10) will include the monthly Legends Dining Room A La Carte menu, as well as information about any special dining events, and a list of all planned buffets and prices for the month. Members can find additional information, such as specific dinner buffet menu items on the Members Only website and the Weekly Dining Specials email. This allows the culinary team to feature exciting items made with the best seasonal and fresh ingredients available. Another new addition will be from our G4S Security Director J.T. LaTour (page 15) who will share relevant security, safety, and personal wellbeing information for you each month. In addition, the Bridge article will be relocated to a new page (15) to allow for more space to promote the many exciting Bridge events. I hope that you will join me in congratulating Chrissy Hansen from the Membership and Marketing team on the new design which is not only beautiful, but very well organized and functional. Happy reading!

Cheers! Nick

ON OUR GREENS

JOE DeMINO, pga director of golf

NOVEMBER IS HERE! November is my favorite month of the year, because it is time for golf season to begin once again at Gleneagles! We are all very excited to have the season officially underway, starting with the Men’s & Ladies opening days. We have great events scheduled for all of our leagues this season, and hope to see many new participants! Once again, we thank our Golf Course Maintenance team for getting the golf courses ready for the season – they look great! We also want to thank them for their efforts in getting the courses cleaned up after Hurricane Irma – they really put forth a tremendous effort to get the courses restored. Some holes will look a little different, and there are more changes still to come, but both courses are in great shape and ready for 2017/2018 season! The calendar will keep you busy, so plan your schedule of events now! We would like to welcome all of our new members – we know that you will love the busy schedule of events. We will help you get into a group that you will feel comfortable with and enjoy your season. We are happy about changing over our handicap system to GHIN, a nationwide and soon to be global service. This enhancement will not change the way you post scores. The Beginners Clinics will start for our new golfers – please come by and join us! We invite everyone to join us for our Player Development program – we know you will have fun learning about your game. We remind everyone to watch the golf basic rules & etiquette video that will be hosted on the Members Only website. Last, we are excited for our new fleet of golf carts – you’ll find lots of thoughtful changes including a new color, better fans, and a more comfortable seat.

MEN’S SOUTH COUNTY TEAM VICTORY We would like to congratulate our Men’s South County Team on their victory over Hunter’s Run on October 3, 2017. Cheers to a another great summer season!

In the Golf Shop MEGAN PENDERGRAFF retail manager

I’m excited for the upcoming season! Apparel will be arriving daily to fill the golf shop and I’m excited to introduce two new lines. For the ladies, Lucky in Love will be arriving mid-November. Lucky in Love is a new fashion displaying fun colors in their skorts and tops. Lucky in Love started in Tennis many years ago and has since grown into the golf division. For the men, we have Sligo. Sligo is a bright, sporty men’s apparel line that brings a poly/jersey fabric into their clothing. Please feel free to give me feedback on these new lines once you see them. Shoes, gloves, bags, and other accessories will begin arriving soon as well.

TIP: ENJOY YOUR ROUND Going into the season, we are sharing a tip that will make not only your round, but also your fellow players’ rounds much more enjoyable. Pace of play (2 hours for 9 holes & 4 hours for 18 holes) is very important to ensure that everyone has the optimal experience on the course. In addition, please continue to maintain the beauty of our course by filling divots, raking the traps, repairing ball marks, and obeying the cart traffic rules and signs. Please do not drive carts in the parking lot or in the communities. If we all can do this, it will help be a smooth and fun season. – Joe

It is always great to see the members coming back for the season. We are looking forward to our season-long “Play with the Pro” event. Last year’s event was fantastic with some great scores and camaraderie. There is no better way to get to know the members and pros than on the course. There will be ladies’ and men’s divisions. The team will be comprised of 3 members and 1 Golf Professional. You will be able to sign up in the golf shop after December 1.

Congrats!

HURRICANE IRMA FAQ At the time of printing the October Eagle, we were just beginning the recovery to the club after Hurricane Irma. Now, we are prepared to share some more comprehensive information, and some answers to Frequently Asked Questions from members near and far since reopening the club. How did our Gleneagles employees fare during the storm? All club employees fared relatively well, with the exception of some minimal damage and loss of power to their homes. Club employees eagerly returned to work after the storm with opportunities in their own departments as well as assisting in landscaping and golf course maintenance as part of the recovery effort. How many trees did we lose? More than 200 trees were uprooted or fell, however, approximately 175 of these trees were able to be saved, including many of the beautiful, mature Live Oak and various species of native palm trees. Approximately 15 Live Oak trees and 10 Black Olive trees were severely damaged, and all of these trees will be replaced.

RICHARD NORTH Hole in One on #17 Legends September 29, 2017

What is the financial expense to the club? The club was able to absorb most of the expense of the hurricane (additional payroll, lost revenues, supplies and misc. repairs) through our normal operating budget. The amount of damage was significantly less than our annual windstorm insurance deductible; however, an estimator from our insurance company documented all losses in the event that we are faced with future losses from another qualifying weather event. We are planning for additional expenses for tree replacement to be incorporated into both the current and future year capital budget. How did the hurricane impact the Healthy Lifestyle Center renovation? The construction crew lost three weeks between clearing the worksite of all loose construction materials, clean-up, and then preparing the worksite again for construction. Adjustments have been made to the critical path and construction timeline, and at this point, we are looking at a delay in opening of approximately ten days. The club is committed to exploring options to open all or part of the new facility as soon as possible, including the possibility of opening the Fitness Center in advance of the pool.

This past season we made considerable changes to our Legends menu as well as The Grille and Veranda and look forward to continuing this as we progress into the holidays. We always try to maintain a proper balance of variety, new concepts, and traditional club fare. I challenge myself and my staff to create and push forward, and I’d like to challenge you as well! Experience a Chef’s Table! Try new items! Order a dish as presented on the menu. Modifications can alter the preparation method and make some dishes suffer. These dishes are conceptualized with taste, texture, and visual appeal all in mind and are meant to be enjoyed that way. We welcome your feedback! Always feel free to stop me or any member of my team at any time to let us know your thoughts. I will always take the time to listen, react and do what’s best for our operation as a whole. I thank you again for all of your support and truly look forward to not only this season, but many more ahead.

The majority of pain and overuse injuries that adults suffer from are 75% to 80% preventable. That’s because movement dysfunctions can cause injury. We now have a personalized assessment program called Fusionetics that we will be implemented beginning December 1. This system identifies any weaknesses in various areas of the body including the foot, ankle, knee, hip, trunk and shoulders. These movement dysfunctions represent muscle imbalances caused by decreased flexibility, muscle weaknesses and imbalanced muscle activation patterns. Here is how Fusionetics can work for you: •

Take a 3 to 6 minute movement screen

The results are analyzed to create a self-care program with exercises and suggestions for improvement.

Download the information and exercises to your phone for you to do yourself.

The cost for the assessment is $20.00.

After this kick-off event, Pro-organized Sunday Mixed Doubles games will continue throughout the season from 9:30 - 11:00 am. The Tennis Facility escaped major damage from Hurricane Irma partly due to luck and partly due to the efficient thoughtful preparation of Gleneagles employees to batten down the hatches. The Golf Maintenance department assisted the Tennis department preparing for the storm with 120 man hours of moving furniture and equipment and tying windscreens in place. Tennis Maintenance employees Pierre Victor and Dumy Javier, with a combined 39 years of service to Gleneagles, worked after the storm with 300 man hours repairing courts and retying all 21 courts of windscreens. As usual, they did so in record time so members were playing tennis again three days after the storm. Great job guys!

One of the most important decisions a doubles team will make is who will play the deuce court and who will play the ad court. There are certainly different skill sets attributable to each side, but you should also consider the abilities of your opponents. In club matches of “B” and “C” players, the serve will go to the wide sides of the service box 80% of the time. At this level it is preferable to have the player with the strongest forehand play the deuce court, (for righties), and better backhand in the ad court. In “A” level tennis where servers typically serve down the middle in the deuce court 80% of the time, it is preferable to have the better backhand in the deuce court. The same tactic would apply if there is a lefty on the team although there is the added bonus if the lefty in the deuce court has a good backhand that there will be two forehands down the middle of the court where many balls are hit. Another consideration would be the team’s skill set at the net. Having the better volley side through the middle where most balls are played strengthens this position as well as allows players to poach with their strongest stroke. Text books will point out that the better player should play the ad court since the “big points” occur here and there is a strong overhead down the middle, but you also can’t get to any “big points” if the deuce player does not do his or her job. The most important reason for playing a certain court is, how do you feel about each side? While a Pro can evaluate your skill set and advise a particular side, you must determine what side is best for you to produce a solid return and get the play flowing in your favor. Having said that, it is of great value and flexibility if you learn to play both sides of the court. This will come in very handy if you need to adjust your strategy and switch courts or pick up with a different partner. – Mike

Players often go astray in defense by getting their priorities wrong. An objective look at the situation will usually indicate which job ought to be tackled first. See example at right. West led the two of clubs which East played the ace and south the five. East returned the four of clubs to the nine and jack. The defenders had two clubs in the bag and could count on the ace of diamonds as a third. Except in the unlikely event of the jack of spades proving to be a trick, West thought the best chance of a further trick for the defense must lie in the heart suit. Thus he switched to the nine of hearts at trick three. The defense was not good enough however. South won the king of hearts, drew trumps and played the queen of diamonds, rendering West helpless. Whether he won or ducked, South could eventually discard his losing heart on one of dummy’s diamonds. It is true the defenders must hope for a trick in hearts, but there is no pressing need to attack the suit. The urgent job is to remove an entry from dummy. West knows from his partner’s return of the four of clubs that South has a third club and he should continue with the king of clubs at trick three, forcing dummy to ruff. After drawing trumps South plays the queen of diamonds as before, but West holds up his ace. East starts an echo with the eight to show an even number of cards and West knows to take his ace on the second round. Now West can switch to a heart or simply play his fourth club. The declarer has been cut from the diamond winners in the dummy and must eventually lose a heart trick. Bottom Line: Look for a chance to cut the link between declarer and dummy.
