The Final Issue

November 30, 2012

So Long...See BNL in New Ways From the first days of the Lab in 1947, the staff have wanted to know what’s going on: the new facilities, research findings, science prizes, jobs available, top-dog BERA volleyball team — and sale items in the classified ads. A series of printed newspapers — first called Isotopics, then The Bulletin Board, the Brookhaven Bulletin, and the presentday The Bulletin — answered the call for information. Now, in the age of computers, tablets, smartphones and the 24-hour news cycle, you learn more — and more quickly — online, and it’s time for a change. This November 30, 2012, issue of The Bulletin is the last. The future for Brookhaven communications includes the Lab’s website (www.bnl.gov); the new email newsletter Brookhaven This Week; the Brookhaven Digest for staff without work computers; and Facebook, Twitter, and other social media outlets. As a final remembrance, we wanted to include everything that could symbolize this newspaper over the years to trigger memories of every person who has contributed to the essence of BNL — but guess what, it won’t fit! So, with caution and anguish, we chose front pages that bring back some unarguable great moments — including a couple of the earliest Isotopics available and the Lab’s seven Nobel Prizes. Note that the first of Brookhaven’s Nobel Prizes, won in 1957 by C.N. Yang and T.D. Lee, lacks its original 1957 page-one announcement, so is represented in issues announcing Yang’s visit to lecture at BNL in 1965 and Lee’s 2007 lecture at BNL on a new aspect of his discovery a half-century later. Plus, we added some Nobel Prize work related to Brookhaven and a “must have” (the Omega Minus discovery in 1964), and a few more. We’re left with searing regrets that we had to omit the many tales of magnificent experiments, versatile administration, and extraordinary BNLers who have filled these pages for so long. Inside, we have crammed photos of many, but we had to leave out so many more, and we don’t want to think about it. These photos are from the past five years, where the 60th anniversary publication Faces (http://www.bnl.gov/60th/faces.asp) left off. So, The Bulletin will be published no longer, but the superb stories about Brookhaven Lab’s remarkable people and achievements will continue to be told — that will not change. — Liz Seubert, Editor

Brookhaven Lab and the frontiers of scientific discovery — what an exciting place to work. The photos on these pages, with a few exceptions, were taken from Bulletins of the past five years, following the 60th anniverary publication Faces (http://www.bnl. gov/60th/faces.asp). We crammed in as many people as possible, but unfortunately couldn’t begin to fit everyone.

Classified Advertisements Placement Notices The Lab’s placement policy is to select the best-qualified candidate for an available position. Candidates are considered in the following order: (1) present benefits-eligible employees within the department/division and/or appropriate bargaining unit, with preference for those within the immediate work group; (2) present benefits-eligible employees within the Laboratory; and (3) outside applicants. In keeping with the Affirmative Action Plan, selections are made without regard to age, race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability or veteran status. Each week, the Human Resources Division lists new placement notices, first, so employees may request consideration for themselves, and, second, for open recruitment. In Appreciation FROM LIZ SEUBERT TO BULLETIN READERS – You’ve been great. The new “news at the Lab” plans, “Brookhaven This Week” and “Brookhaven Digest” will be great too, and will gradually develop their own personality. RE: THE ADS! BNLers on site will be able to see the ads either on their Lab intranet homepage or printed as part of Brookhaven Digest. From off site, you will be able to see the ads by signing up for the weekly email to be sent out to all who ask for it, through the Brookhaven Retired Employees Association (BREA, see notice above, right). You don’t have to be a BREA member to sign up for this email, but you must have an email address (not necessarily your own). If, like me, you are still somewhat in the dark ages with regard to computers at home, you can get your family and technical friends to help you. Offer them chocolate or other fine bribes and ask them to receive the ads in their own email, which can come in on their computer, laptop, iPad, or even their smart phone. Then they can show you all the marvelous bargains that you used to see in the Bulletin, only you’ll see them earlier, not two weeks late by snail mail...... If you are not a computer person, to find out about lectures, concerts, etc., you can ask the same family members and friends to receive the new “Brookhaven This Week” and then show it to you. This weekly email will link to the interesting research and events happening at the Lab. If your grandchildren are receiving it for you, you may find they get interested in science through helping you see what’s going on. Look on the bright side!!!!! I plan to retire in early January, but until then, please contact me with any questions at Ext. 2346 or [email protected]. — Liz Seubert

Thanks for the Memories In this, the last issue, Editor Liz Seubert, Assistant Editor Joe Gettler, and Photographer Roger Stoutenburgh thank all concerned with the content, production, and delivery of the Bulletin for their invaluable contributions, some this past year, some for many years. We share so many memories: squeezing in an important late-breaking story, waiting breathlessly for an impossibly after-the-deadline photo op that can just make it; holding the press for a hideous error spotted in time to make a new plate; working somewhat uneasily through the (quite frequent) times when everything seems to be going smoothly (What are we missing? Can this be true?) — with all of us relying on each other to put out the best publication we can. Thanks, everyone. “Everyone” includes: Jen Abramowitz, Glenn Abramowitz, Kelly Backofen, Rick Backofen, Louisa Barone, Charles Barrett, Gloria Bennett, Cindi Biancarosa, Tiffany Bowman, Natalie Crnosja, Kay Cordtz, Diane DiBlasi, Ray Dumont, Justin Eure, Dawn Farrell, Patricia Flood, Jerry Gaeta, John Galvin, Peter Genzer, Jim Green, Diane Greenberg, Michael Herbert, Kevin Hester, Cornelius Jackson, Lisa Jansson, Lauren Jarrell, Terry Jones, Jane Koropsak, Louanne Ligon, Barbara Mack, Karen McNulty Walsh, Bonnie Miller, Louvania Minter, Dorothea Nash, Darlene Peragine, Alyssa Pilkington, Alex Reben, Mona S. Rowe, Joseph Rubino, Sue Runkowski, Will Safer, Regalado Sanchez, Nick Statt, Gary Schroeder, Mary Turner, Tina Walsh, Chelsea Whyte. Other people who have joined in providing content and general assistance in all sorts of ways are too numerous to mention, but all these contributions have been most sincerely appreciated.

On the Web, the Bulletin is located at www.bnl.gov/bnlweb/pubaf/bulletin.asp. A calendar listing scientific and technical seminars and lectures is found at www. bnl.gov/bnlweb/pubaf/calendar.asp.
