Young People’s D.I.Y. Project gives something back to the community Neath Port Talbot Engage Programme (which has now merged with ‘NPT Educated Outside The School Setting’ provision) was awarded £430.00 to undertake a community project at venues used by the young people for their education. The group located wooden pallets to make three sofas, one for outside and two for inside the buildings. To make the project’s funding go as far as possible the group purchased what they could at a discounted price and used supplies left over from previous projects. The young people prepared the wooden pallets by sanding and painting them. They then looked into ways of covering the sofas to compare costs, with some visiting DIY superstores within the county. The group decided to purchase custom-made cushioning at the best price possible, again working as a team. The project did have its ups and downs but overall the project was a success by helping bring the young people together and creating something for the buildings they use.

There was left over money from the ‘pallet sofa project’, so it was agreed to use it on a community project in Taibach Community Education Centre, where the young people helped to transform the old crèche into a Christmas grotto. The group worked very hard and put a lot of effort into the project, including painting, carpentry (wooden gate, stable, fence and wall display), arts & craft and putting up Christmas decorations. This was a massive help for the community centre and the manager said that “if we had not stepped in to support the project the grotto would not have been finished.”

Young People Receive Gold Millennium Volunteers Certificates Rachel Miller, Reece Hubble, Charlotte Miller and Sophie Walsh have all received their gold Millennium Volunteers certificates which are awarded to young people who volunteer for 200 hours. Since achieving their goal they have continued to volunteer in youth clubs as part of the staffing team. Rachel has been able to use her experiences as a volunteer to secure an Activity Worker post at Crynant Youth Club. This is something Reece, Sophie and Charlotte all hope to achieve in the future. Well done to you all. Your hard work and achievements provide positive role models for all young people in your community.
Millennium Volunteers is a recognition scheme that rewards young people with certificates for doing voluntary work. Certificates are issued for completing 50 and 100 hours of voluntary work and if the young volunteer manages to reach 200 hours of voluntary work, they get an Award of Excellence! The Welsh Government stamp on the bottom shows that it is official and it looks great on your CV! Community Safety Partnership Support Young People The young people from Crynant Youth Club often attend sessions involving guitar tuition and singing but resources at the youth club are very basic. All that has now changed thanks to funding from the Community Safety Team! With the money the youth club received they purchased a state-of-the-art music system which the young people use as an amp with a microphone for singing and also as a beat box facility which has been very popular. The system also has a USB facility which allows the young people to play their own music and a DVD surround sound facility which is more than adequate to support film nights. The light display facility is also very handy and has been used for several discos at the youth club.
The young people and staff at Crynant Youth Club are very grateful for the funding received from the Community Safety Partnership as they would not have been able to purchase the equipment without their support. The Youth Related Projects fund is available for community police officers or other community based groups to apply for financial assistance towards the costs of projects involving young people, not currently taking part in any community activity, in diversionary activities, to achieve a higher interest and to increase the number of young people attending. Seven Sisters Youth Club Celebrates St Dwynwen’s Day 25 January Fe wnaeth bobl ifanc yng Nghlwb Ieuenctid Blaendulais dathlu Dydd Santes Dwynwen gan wneud ac addurno cacennau bach. Fe wnaeth pawb yn y clwb mwynhau’r gweithgaredd; yn enwedig bwyta’r cacennau ar y diwedd. Young people in Seven Sisters Youth Club celebrated St Dwynwen's Day by making and decorating cupcakes. Everyone at the club enjoyed the activity; especially eating the cakes at the end. Cafodd y bobl ifanc y cyfle i gymryd rhan mewn cystadleuaeth llwy cariad. Paratoid nhw’r toes halen yn gyntaf cyn creu mewn i lwyau cariad. The young people also had the opportunity to take part in a Love Spoon competition. They made the Salt Dough then crafted it into Love Spoons.
Pwy oedd Dwynwen?
Who was Dwynwen?
Tywysoges o’r 5ed ganrif oedd Dwynwen. Daeth yn nawddsant cariadon Cymru pan roddodd Duw y gallu iddi wireddu dymuniadau cariadon Cymru. Er ei bod eisoes wedi dyweddio, syrthiodd Dwynwen mewn cariad gyda Maelon.
A 5th century princess, Dwynwen became patron saint of Welsh lovers when God gave her the power to grant the wishes of Welsh lovers. Although already engaged, Dwynwen fell hopelessly in love with Maelon.
Gan wybod na allai’r berthynas weithio, ymddangosodd angel ym mreuddwyd Dwynwen a rhewi Maelon, gan ei droi’n flocyn o iâ. Torodd Dwynwen ei Chalon, a throdd Dwynwen at Dduw gan weddio arno i ddadmer Maelon. Er na briododd Dwynwen byth, death yn nawddsant cariadon Cymru.
Knowing that the relationship could not last, an angel appeared in Dwynwen’s dreams and froze Maelon, turning him into a block of ice. Heartbroken, Dwynen turned to God and prayed that Maelon be thawed, and althought she would never marry, her name became forever linked to the lovers of Wales.
Huge thank you to Charlotte Miller of Seven Sisters Youth Club for development of the article! *Information on Dwynwen courtesy of the Welsh Language Board poster.

12 young people from Cimla Youth Club took part in St. John’s Ambulance C.P.R. Training Course on 25th January. The course included dealing with an unconscious casualty, resuscitation and chest pains. The young people engaged well with the trainer/course and asked lots of questions. Everyone enjoyed the course and one of the young people stated “It was great! I’ve always wanted to learn first aid and now I want to learn more.” This course is the fourth in a series of health workshops delivered at Cimla Youth Club. The other workshops (see pictures below) included smoking cessation, alcohol misuse and the dangers of legal highs. Nick Williams, Activity Worker at the youth club did a brilliant job with the delivery. Simon Williams, RADS Advisor also delivered an age appropriate workshop on healthy relationships/sexual health. Well done everyone!!!

Well done to our very own Karen Davies and Aleasha Gordon who in November competed in the annual ‘Chase the Pud’ 5km fun run in Cardiff on Sunday 29th November 2015. Aleasha wanted to participate in memory of her grandmother who passed away due to heart problems. They raised nearly £100 for the British Heart Foundation. For next year’s event Karen is hoping to sign up as the Pud!
Fantastic, a big well done to the both of you!

A group of young carers are coming together to scale the heights of Pen-Y-Fan in the Brecon Beacons on Saturday 2nd April for charity. The money collected will enable the young carers to pay for future activities at their youth club. James Roberts from the Swansea Bay Carers Trust says “it’s a great cause and a difficult venture, but I’m sure they can do it!” Cherryl Roberts of the Families First Team will be collecting all your pennies for this challenge soon! We wish the young carers all the best for this adventure!!
