Once Upon A Time
Judged Art Show, Reception, and Pot-Luck Dinner a huge success!
The stories told by the 27 artists who entered “Once Upon A Time” were intriguing, creative and absolutely fantastic! The reception and potluck dinner were a wonderful time for all, a great opportunity to peruse the varied artworks submitted, and as always, a good time to reconnect with our fellow artists and meet some of our newest members. If you couldn’t make it, it would be well worth your while to come by the Henegar Center & check out the wonderful show upstairs. It’s guaranteed to impress. A reminder that this show will travel to FIT on October 1st. There will be another reception on October 12th at 4:00 p.m. at the Evans Library. All artists & guests are welcome to attend. Leala Dunn is the contact for this if you have any questions. The award winners & photos are on page 2, but all entries were award worthy! Two pieces have already been sold! Good job SAL Artists!! A special thanks goes out to the volunteers that made the terrific show possible, and to the members that helped set up the pot-luck dinner. It truly was a wonderful evening.

Charles Spohn presents his art / Publicity News
Paul Carmen presents Modern Photography—September 20th Paul Carman has been a photographer for more than 15 years—starting with shooting and developing black & whites in a home darkroom, to currently shooting & editing digital frames. His subjects have varied from portraits, to angel statues, and most recently , to wildlife photos. Across those years & photographs, photography as art has been a common theme, & like art, good photography is about decision making. For this month’s meeting, Paul will be talking about decisions that everyone can consider as part of improving their own photographs (or other artistic mediums as well. From composition to perspective, colors to lines, bright lights to dark shadows, Paul will use sample photographs to touch on both the “scientific” as well as the “artistic” aspects of photography as part of inspiring you to see the world (& take pictures, too) in new & exciting ways.

eresa McReynolds - multi-media and clay artist and artographer -
Says “Life is my major art project; and I play with photography, clay... most anything I find to take my hands to – multimedia; and I love playing with paint, whether it be on canvas, or not! . .anything goes with paint! I started with mud pies, crayons, sock puppets and library “how-to” books....have been 'doing” art ever since. “
Some of the major influences on and inspirations for your art? “My Jr. and Sr. high school art teacher, Mr. Glenniwinkle ( I promise you that is his real name!), Julia's sister, Dad and God.” You can find some of my works at the Strawbridge Art League and at Cafe' Unique. . and you can contact me via email:

L
eala Dunn -multi-media artist, stippler and Mother of Cira . “I am a painter mainly with acrylics and watercolor, but I have played around some with oil. I
like to mix different mediums together to get the best effect. I like creating stipple drawings with pen and ink. Then I perform a wash over them with watered down acrylics. I started my artistic career around the age of 8. My grandmother taught me to draw during the summers I spent with her in Colorado. She inspired me to create. Then I attended various different classes over the years to develop my unique style.” Some of the major influences on and inspirations for
her art? “I was really inspired by Van Gogh, Picasso and Dali during my high school years. As an adult I am inspired by people in SAL such as Humberto Rebollo, Elizabeth Kaufmann and Anna Jo Vahle. Outside the league, Damian Share has been one of the most positive influences on me personally. He encourages me to continue to create. He often says, “Just put in the hours!” meaning, the more you paint, the better you can become.” Leala says “ I actually enjoy making all those tiny little dots when I do stipple creations. It is calming to my mind. I have a 6 year old daughter who loves to create with me. She shares my passion and joy of painting. This inspires me to find ways to share the gift of art with other children.” Leala is a child at heart and creates with joy wherever she is!

Charles Spohn presents his art & completes a painting at the July General meeting! Charles Spohn moved to the Melbourne area in 1978 from Cleveland. He was not originally interested in art, but on the advice from his wife, he went to an art class here. He has been hooked ever since! Charles was one of the founders of the Strawbridge Art League! He is a past president, and also was president of the Artists Guild and the Artists Forum at the museum. He had a studio across from the museum for many years. After that first art class, Charles took many more classes, and was very influenced by Bill Schultz and Frits Van Eden. Frits advised him to “use lots of paint!” He also learned to use the side of the brush, and he paints with regular house paint. His main subject matter is faces of girls and has a formula for getting the proportions correct. He always remembers to use a light source to add interest to the piece. Charles highly recommends the following books to help anyone with their art; “Drawing on the right Side of the Brain” and “ Drawing on the Artist Within”, both by Betty Edwards, and “The Complete Painting course” by Wendon Blake. Every day, Charles does at least 2 drawings with different kinds of media. And he is very proud of the fact that he gives away all of his paintings. His best advice is to ‘KEEP PAINTING!” Good Advice!
