Assessing the Nutritional and Health Care Services Provided to Older Patients in Khartoum North Teaching Hospital. This study was conducted during June 2007 to February 2008 among older patients in Khartoum North Teaching Hospital, in Khartoum State. The objective of study was to assess the health and nutrition care provided to older patients. The sample size (all older patients; > 60 year) was thirty six (36) patients; twenty seven (27) were males and nine (9) were females. The data collection was done through interviews using structured questionnaires. The result showed that most (69.4%) of the older patients were illiterate or with primary schooling (25%). Forty seven percent of the patients (47%) were not able to respond to the questionnaire, mainly because they were very sick (in coma, 41%; unable to talk, 53%; hearing problem, 6%) and the co-patients were helping during the interviews. Forty four percent (44%) of the older patients were suffering from teeth problems; 62% with chewing problem; 56% with eyesight problems. The common health problems for the elderly patients were cardiovascular diseases (19.4%; diabetes (14%); chronic renal failure 11%. Interestingly, results showed that 36% of the older patients did not about their disease and/or they have wrong information compared to what was written in their records. From the older patient's point of view, the ventilation in the ward good (67%); 39% were facing problems in getting to the ward because of the different physical disabilities or because the word in the second floor while there was no lift. All the bathroom were of traditional (Arabic) design (no seats) which made it extremely difficult (particularly those with bone fracture) to use them. However, all patients reported that bathroom were not clean, on the other hand, 83% of patients reported that they were having good nursing care and full-board catering. However 56% were getting their own meals from outside the hospital either because they did not like the hospital food (70%) or because it was inadequate (30%).
