IT organizations often spend multiple weeks to plan, architect, troubleshoot, and deploy a multivendor virtualization infrastructure. Deployment teams must assemble and integrate a range of hardware and software components from different vendors (i.e. servers, storage,

network, virtualization software, and operating systems). The process is not only time consuming but also error prone, making it hard to achieve a timely and profitable return on investment. Complex integration models can expose even the most carefully planned deployments to unforeseen risks such as implementation and testing delays, service downtime, costly upgrades, or inefficient system performance. The Oracle Solution for Virtual Servers offers a much simpler approach that speeds deployment and reduces risk. It is a single-vendor solution for both hardware and software stacks. Total Cost of Ownership Oracle is the only vendor offering enterprise consolidation solutions for x86-based infrastructures that include built-in virtualization technologies engineered, tested and deployed together as a single system. Because it provides these technologies with high-quality servers, offering a choice of Oracle Linux or Oracle Solaris and a unified service support contract, Oracle can deliver a predictable and easily quantifiable TCO. Oracle provides Ops Center systems management software without charge as part of Premiere Support Option. Coupled with ILOM, the customer gets a robust system management tool that benefits both standalone and cloud system use. While other vendors offer differing system management tools that discourage direct feature by feature comparison, the important thing to remember is that they charge for comprehensive system management; we do not. Oracle offers a Single Support Contact and the testing of bug fixes across the entire stack. With a single support access point, Oracle gets rid of customer time wasted on calling multiple vendors and keeping record of problem ownership. Further, it is common that fixes from one vendor adversely affect another vendor’s products. Oracle, in comparison, tests all our bug fixes against the entire Oracle stack to eliminate these unintended consequences. Taken together, Oracle completely eliminates two of our customer’s most resource intensive activities described above. Oracle offers a Single Management Tool for the entire stack, (i.e.) disk to application. This means that stacks using optional Enterprise Manager with Oracle software and hardware provide higher quality system management information, as layers interact and learn from each other. This also means that system managers using Enterprise Manager are more likely to manage more systems per administrator, a cost savings. Because it offers enterprise consolidation solutions as complete x86 infrastructures and storage, Oracle stands as an exception. The largest cost factors in a standard virtualized x86 enterprise infrastructure quite often arise from having multiple vendors, in the form of software licensing and support costs for Red Hat Enterprise Linux and VMware vSphere, for instance. On a two-socket system, these two costs alone can represent as much as 71 percent of total TCO over a three-year period. Oracle states that its strategy of engineering hardware and software to work together throughout the stack is designed to reduce the complexity that affects time to deploy and support the infrastructure, as well as to reduce the IT cost structure, and to drive efficiencies that reduce TCO across the board. By providing a single point of accountability for the entire system, Premier Support lowers administration costs and reduces costly downtime. This substantially reduces the risks associated with deploying and managing IT systems, as well as providing improved and easily quantified TCO.

Oracle has focused intensively on TCO as it applies to the entire x86/Storage infrastructure stack, designing the major hardware and software components with optimization of performance, management, and TCO as the object from the start. Because these components are created at Oracle by Oracle engineers, they are designed, tested, certified, packaged, deployed, upgraded, managed, and supported together. Oracle can deliver lower TCO in the design and operation of its system, in the ease of deployment enabled by VM Templates and Validated Configurations (eliminating costs for installation and configuration, as well as reducing time to operation and maintenance costs) and in the efficiency and effectiveness of its award-winning Premier Support Package (minimizing costly downtime). Customers have a single point of accountability and assistance for the entire IT stack, which in and of itself, can dramatically serve to lower TCO.

Systems Overview Three HW configurations have been proposed (small/medium/large) in order to start a basic cloud infrastructure with the ability to dynamically scale up as the workload increases, without compromising on the high availability or the performances of the solution. The small configuration consists of one Sun Server X3-2 server for the management (OVM Manager / storage management ―CAM‖ / HW management ―OpsCenter‖), two Sun Server X3-2 (OVM server) and one Sun Storage 2540-M2. Each OVM Server has two HBAs directly attached to the Sun Storage 2540-M2. The medium configuration consists of the previous configuration with a memory upgrade to the OVM Servers and the addition of additional storage capacity to meet the capacity and performance needs. The large configuration consists of the medium configuration with an additional Sun Server X3-2 (third OVM Server), and a storage capacity expansion tray, the Sun Storage 2501-M2. The pictures below illustrate the various components and roles used in this white paper.

Large configuration

The OVM Manager server is responsible for managing the OVM Servers through the OVMnet network. The Storage Management Software, CAM, is also running on this server. The OVM servers are responsible for the running of the Virtual machines (VMs). They are directly connected to the Fiber Channel Storage Array through two redundant HBAs. The Storage array provides connectivity for up to 8 HBAs, or 4 OVM Servers in a fully redundant configuration. For the large configuration, an additional storage expansion tray and a third hypervisor (OVM Server 3) have been added. OVMnet is the Hypervisor Management Network, used by OVM Manager for various functions like: Server Management, Cluster Heartbeat, Live Migrate and storage function that are network based (iSCSI, NFS). For this purpose, any of the four integrated 10GigEth/1GigEth port (NIC 0..3) can be selected to be bounded for the management network. VMnet1 is used for the network traffic between the different virtual machines in a server pool. With the four embedded 10GigEth/1GigEth ports available in any Oracle Sun Server X3-2, various network configurations can be achieved from the OVM Manager console, including any additional NIC card. The various configurations available depend greatly on the customer needs, the available VLANs, and the internal network policies. OVM Templates Oracle VM provides the ability to rapidly and easily deploy a single pre-built, pre-configured, preoptimized and pre-patched guest virtual machine (or multiple machines depending on the application). The guest VM can contain a complete Oracle software solution along with the operating system and related software infrastructure. These guest VMs, called Oracle VM Templates, are available from Oracle’s E-Delivery website and are ready to download and deploy. Already configured for production use, Oracle VM Templates can save users days or weeks learning to install and configure a sophisticated product such as Siebel CRM or Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control. Instead, users can simply download and start the VM to begin using it right away. Within these Templates, Oracle software is automatically configured in the same manner as if the software had been installed and patched manually. Accordingly, Oracle VM Templates can also be fully customized post-install and then re-saved as ―golden image‖ Templates in Oracle VM. Such Templates can serve as a user’s enterprise deployment standard to minimize risks and variation across multiple instance deployments. All of the existing Oracle VM Templates that were certified with Oracle VM server 2.x are also certified with Oracle VM Server 3. An application ―assembly‖ is very similar to an Oracle VM Template except that an additional set of configuration information and management policies are packaged along with the set of multiple virtual machines, their virtual disks, and the inter-connectivity between them. These assemblies are packaged using the industry-standard Open Virtualization Format (OVF) for the configuration and policy information. Assemblies can be created as a set of .ovf Open Virtualization Format and disk image (.img) files, or may all be contained in a single Open Virtualization Format Archive (.ova) file. Oracle Virtual Assembly Builder is a sophisticated development tool for introspecting the current application environment and creating assemblies or collections of VMs along with all their critical configuration parameters to allow you to move them to a virtual environment or to replicate easily and quickly within an existing environment. The Oracle VM Guest VM API allows the guest to set/get key/value pairs through the Oracle VM Manager to the virtual machine. The API allows direct integration between guest software and the virtualization layer, to assist in orchestration of complex, multi-VM deployments. Management OVM Manager Management for the Oracle VM environment is provided by Oracle VM Manager, a trans-action-based framework that also includes an integrated database and a web-based management user interface. Oracle VM Manager comes as a SW package to install on a dedicated HW (called OVM Manager server in this Whitepaper). It is also possible to have OVM Manager running on a virtualized environment (as a VM), but this is out of the scope of this document. Oracle VM Manager controls the virtualization environment, creating and monitoring Oracle VM servers and the virtual machines. Oracle VM Manager serves as the only administrative interface to the Oracle VM servers, unlike previous-generations of Oracle VM that were jointly administered from the management server, as well as locally from the command-line for each Oracle VM Server. Oracle VM Manager 3 is an Oracle Fusion Middleware application, based on the Oracle Weblogic Server application server and Oracle Database. The Oracle VM Manager runs on 64-bit Oracle Linux 5.5 OS or later. For its management repository, Oracle VM Manager uses an Oracle Database, which can be installed either on the same management server or a separate server. Oracle Database 11g Express Edition (XE) is bundled with Oracle VM Manager 3 for customer evaluation purposes, but Oracle Database Standard Edition (SE) or Enterprise Edition (EE) is required for production support as the management repository. All necessary licenses, including licenses for Weblogic Server and Database (SE or EE), are included at no additional charge.

StorageTek Common Array Manager (CAM) Simple Installation and Management

The Sun Storage Common Array Manager’s (CAM) web-like and task-based management interface significantly reduces the complexity of installation, configuration, management, and diagnostic tasks. Online capacity expansion, data-volume creation, and host-to-volume mappings give users control of their arrays and the ability to make quick changes when necessary. Accessible from anywhere in the world with a secure internet connection, Sun Storage CAM includes automated diagnostics so users can focus on precise, predictable, and repeatable results. Sun Storage Common Array Manager

Common Array Manager (CAM) is web-based management software and is the primary interface for configuring, managing, monitoring, and diagnosing the array. The management software consists of a suite of tools that enable the storage administrator to manage the array both out-of-band over Ethernet and/or in-band using a proxy agent running on a data host which is directly connected to the RAID array (FC or SAS). CAM also offers a scriptable command line interface (CLI) for those desiring it. New arrays are easily registered using the CAM registration wizard. This is done simply by either selecting auto discovery (if the data host is on the same subnet), or by providing the data host’s IP address. Once an array is discovered and registered, management of that array is identical to any outof-band managed RAID array. The management software also provisions and maintains storage for data hosts using storage components that include Storage pools, Storage profiles, Volumes, Virtual disks and Host Groups for easier and quicker application tuning. Snapshots, Volume Copies and Storage Domains are also available as required. With CAM's application driven array management benefits of ease of use, reduced operation costs, quicker deployment time and quick service for maximum uptime, the array is easily upgradable. This ensures zero downtime in OVM configuration migrations from small to medium and from medium to large.

Sun StorageTek Common Array Manager The management software provisions and maintains storage for data hosts using these storage components: 

Storage pools are collections of volumes that share a profile defining the common configuration of the volumes.



Storage profiles define the characteristics of a storage pool. You can choose one from the set of pre-configured application aware profiles or create a new one.



Volumes are divisions of a storage pool, consisting of virtual disks, representing the storage space that is used by the data hosts in the environment.



Virtual disks, also called redundant array of independent disks (RAID) sets, are collections of locations in the memory of more than one physical disk. The storage array handles a virtual disk as if it were an actual disk.



Host groups are a collection of hosts that will share access to the same volumes.



Snapshots are point-in-time images of the data in a volume. They offer a high-availability alternative to backups as the array does not need to be taken offline to create the snapshot. Snapshots consume less space than the original data.



Volume copies are copies of the complete contents of one data volume that are located on another data volume on the same array.

Storage Domains which allow the array to be partitioned so that only certain hosts have access to volumes. The 2500-M2 support up to 32 Domains. CAM software enables monitoring and diagnostic tasks on the array. You can configure the software to monitor on a 24-hour basis, collecting information that enhances the reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) of the array. The management software records alerts and notifications, which can be monitored by displaying the log file. It also automates the transmission of alerts, which can be sent to an email address, to a pager, or to diagnostic software running on a management host on the network. Finally, the management software enables you to run diagnostic tests to troubleshoot problems and access Service Advisor for instruction on replacing field-replaceable units (FRUs). Remote CLI Client

The array can also be managed and configured by using the remote command-line interface (CLI) client. The CLI provides the same control and monitoring capability as the web browser, and it is also scriptable for running frequently performed tasks. The remote CLI client is available for the Solaris operating system (OS) and several other operating systems. Management-Related Service

Management can also be performed using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) web interfaces for management and monitoring of storage. HTTPS is primarily for web browsers and is protected by passwords and data encryption. The remote command-line interface (CLI) client on a management host is also used for management and monitoring of storage. Managing Arrays

By default, the management host communicates with the arrays out-of-band over Ethernet. This enables you to manage the storage and monitor, diagnose, and fix problems in the array with a browser from any host that has a network connection to the management host. You can also configure in-band management for communication to travel over the data path between a data host and the array. When using out-of-band management, an Ethernet cable connects your management host in the site local area network (LAN) to the array. You have the following options in how you connect the array to the site LAN: 

Dynamic IP address. The array can get its IP addresses from your site’s Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server each time it logs in to the LAN.



Static IP address. You can set a static IP addresses for the controllers.



Default IP address. You can use default IP addresses for the controllers.



The level of access that the array allows from the network.

You can also manage the array and monitor, diagnose, and fix problems manually with sscs commands or by means of scripts using a remote command-line interface (CLI) client.

The Oracle Sun Storage 2540-M2 Array Hardware and Software components The Sun Storage 2540-M2 was chosen as the array for its modular design, creating an affordable entry point without sacrificing future scalability - enabling customers to start small and grow when they’re required. Dual-active controllers and up to 12 SAS2 drives combine to create a fully-featured and highly available storage system in a 2U enclosure. When capacity and/or performance requirements change, the 2540-M2 Array’s scalability supports up to 84 additional drives for a total of 96 drives. The 2540-M2 Array supports direct attachment of up to eight servers, or provides additional server attachment through FC SAN connectivity. This makes it an ideal solution for businesses that want to initially deploy the 2540-M2 Array as direct attached, and then seamlessly transition to a SAN when necessary. The 2540-M2 Array also combines Oracle’s time-proven designs with advanced front-end 8 Gb/sec FC & 6 Gb/sec SAS2 host connectivity and next-generation SAS2 backend technology to enable organizations productivity through data consolidation, availability, performance, and scalability. Note, that each one of the 6Gbps SAS ports are x 4 ―wide‖, ensuring the creation of 4 lanes in a single connector (24Gbps per SAS port). For performance benefits, our solution benefits from the utilization of 15K revolutions per minute (rpm) SAS2 disk drives within our 2540-M2 arrays. High spindle speeds ensure lower seek times, lower latency and therefore higher disk transfer rates. As mentioned earlier, the 2540-M2 Array dynamically scales both in terms of capacity and performance. A fully configured array supports a maximum of 96 disk drives per system. Typically for IOPS performance, the greater the number of data disks within the array the higher the overall system IOPS performance attained. Throughput however, is not disk drive dependent. For customers where performance is a key criteria, our recommendation is to enable the turbo, or Performance Enhancement feature where applicable. As a rule of thumb, the turbo feature provides performance benefits on arrays exceeding approximately 20 disks in a throughput environment, where the application type is sequential and large block IO. For small block and random application IO, this feature benefits the array exceeding approximately 50 disk drives. The 2540-M2 with its modular capacity and performance scaling architecture is also ideally suited for mixed workload application types and therefore a natural choice for virtualized and scalable needs.

Integrated and Optimized for the Oracle Stack Oracle Optimized Solutions are predefined solutions that integrate the complete application to disk stack so that customers can lower their TCO, mitigate risk and improve productivity and efficiency. The 2540-M2 array is fully integrated into several of these solutions including the World Record TPCH@3000GB benchmark for Oracle Database 11g highlighting the power of the Oracle’s integrated hardware and software solutions.

About Multipathing

With multipathing, also called multipath failover, an array or network can detect when an adapter has failed and automatically switch access to an alternate adapter. Multipathing enables high-availability configuration because it ensures that the data path remains active. Multipathing also helps increase performance to multicontroller disk arrays by spreading I/O between multiple paths into the array. Within the array, storage pools use multipathing by default. To complete the data path, data hosts also need the ability to multipath. For more information about the appropriate multipathing software for your data host, refer to the release notes for the Sun Storage Common Array Manager.

Oracle VM and the 2540-M2 External Storage Oracle has made storage configuration and integration as flexible and modular as possible by creating a Storage Connect plug-in for each different category and type of storage. Storage in Oracle VM refers to two different types of disk storage: the space available for environment resources such as templates and ISO files, and the logical or physical disks used by virtual machines. Note: In addition there is also disk space used for the pool file systems of clustered server pools, but that is not the focus of this section. For virtual machine disks Oracle VM offers you two choices: 

Virtual disks: disk image files on a file system.



Raw physical disks: LUNs accessed directly by the virtual machine.

The design decision of virtual versus physical storage access depends on your server virtualization use cases as well as the existing storage hardware at your disposal. Virtual storage enables quick and easy on-the-fly configuration but introduces a higher level of abstraction. Physical storage access implies that virtual machine disk storage is mapped directly onto the LUNs configured in the physical storage hardware, which is exactly like the way physical servers access their storage. The advantage here is that existing procedures and storage management practices can be maintained. Storage can be configured locally, specifically using an OCFS2 file system on a local disk of the Oracle VM Server. However, it is far more performant and reliable to use a separate location for a storage repository, so that it can be addressed by and attached to all Oracle VM Servers in the server pool. This is also essential for live migration and HA configurations. Storage is configured with any of the following technologies: 

Local disks



Shared Network Attached Storage - NFS



Shared iSCSI SANs: abstracted LUNs or raw disks accessible over existing network infrastructure



Fibre Channel SANs connected to one or more host bus adapters (HBAs)

Note: OCFS2 (Oracle Cluster File System) is used in all these storage configurations except for server pools with no clustering enabled.

To enable HA or live migration, you must make sure all Oracle VM Servers have access to the same storage resources. Specifically for live migration the Oracle VM Servers also must be part of the same server pool. Also note that server pools require access to a shared file system where server pool information is stored and retrieved, for example in case of failure and subsequent server role changes. The server pool file system can either be on an NFS share or on a LUN of a storage array. Oracle VM Manager distinguishes between File Servers and Storage Arrays in the Storage tab of the Hardware view. Depending on your hardware and networking configuration, external storage may be detected during discovery of the Oracle VM Servers or a rescan of their physical disks. Local storage is always detected during this discovery operation. An external storage element is created on storage hardware: a server configured for NAS offering NFS shares, generic iSCSI targets and LUNs, or SAN devices, the 2540-M2, for the purpose of this paper. The server or disk subsystem offering the storage simply needs to be reachable by the Oracle VM Servers in the Oracle VM environment through a Fibre Channel or Ethernet network. The external storage is offered as a mount point (NFS share) or LUN (iSCSI and fibre channel) which can be discovered through Oracle VM Manager as a potential location for a repository, or a raw disk for use with a VM. The typical way to attach external storage to the Oracle VM environment is to create a new storage entity in Oracle VM Manager and point to the location of the external storage, the 2540-M2, while selecting the appropriate Storage Connect plug-in. Subsequently, you may choose to configure a storage repository on one or more of the discovered storage entities in order to make storage resources available to servers and server pools in the Oracle VM environment. Upgrade Path Both the servers and storage components have been chosen in a way of ensuring a linear performance growth, while simplifying the process of adding any new HW components when moving to the various possible configurations, for example, small to medium, small to large, medium to large. No CPU upgrade, no HBA modification, no cabling changes (except when adding a third OVM server) are required when upgrading from one configuration to the other one.

The Oracle 2540 M2 benefits from the fastest 15K revolutions per minute (rpm) SAS2 electromechanical disk drives. High spindle speeds ensure lower seek times and latency resulting in higher disk transfer rates. A fully configured 2540 M2 with 48 disk drives is capable of delivering 140K Cache read IOPS (22K disk read & 5K disk write) performance. The larger the number of “data” disk drives within the configuration, the higher the IOPS attained. For throughput application needs, a fully populated 2540 M2 is capable of 2.5GBps Cache Read (2.0GBps Disk Read & 1.1GBps Disk Write) performance. The 2540 M2 with its modular capacity and performance scaling architecture is also ideally suited to mixed workload application types and therefore a natural choice for virtualized and scalable needs. The 2540 M2 also benefits from 2 x SAS2 expansion ports. Each one of these ports is 6Gbps SAS x 4 ―wide‖ that ensure the creation of 4 lanes in a single connector (24Gbps per SAS port).
