Cracow, Jagiellonian University, November 17, 2016 The American distinguished researcher, Thomas Saaty, Doctor Honoris Causa of the Jagiellonian University, has inspired a considerable number of researchers to deep investigations of pairwise comparisons methods (in abbreviation: PC-methods) applied to decisionmaking processes in diverse fields, among them, in marketing research, industry, computer science and even military planning. Important mathematical tools in PC-methods are reciprocal matrices over groups and indices of inconsistency of such matrices. The lecture will be devoted to a part of mathematics needed for necessary improvements in PC-methods. A relatively new mathematical approach to PC-matrices and new results will be shown. Among them, basic properties of the metric induced by Koczkodaj’s inconsistency index will be briefly proved. Simple applications of Hou’s product of matrices will be pointed out.
