Parameters and mechanisms adhesion in two microalgae strains Tiffany Le Norcy, Claudia Zea, Isabelle Linossier, Karine Réhel, Fabienne Faÿ Université de Bretagne-Sud, EA 3884, Laboratoire de Biotechnologie et Chimie Marine, Institut Universitaire Européen de la Mer, F-56100 Lorient, France
Microalgae are complexes microorganisms capable of adhering on submerged surfaces and participate in the formation of biofouling. Very few studies were made in order to understand the mechanism which permits the adhesion of microalgae to surfaces. Our objectives are to define optimal parameters (medium, pH, salinity and light) of growth and adhesion in different species of microalgae: Cylindrotheca closterium and Exanthemachrysis gayraliae. With these parameters we can observe microalgae adhesion using scanning electron microscope and confocal laser scanning microscope. With these observations we can try to understand how their adhesion is possible. We also study the topography impact by testing different kinds of surfaces: hollow or plot of different forms (round, square…). By discovering mechanims of microalgae adhesion we could find a solution to limit the participation of microalgae in the biofouling.
