PC HARDWARE REPAIR TECHNICIAN Occupational Code: 1543 Salary Range: 23A Status: Classified FLSA: Non-exempt Established: 5/99

NATURE OF WORK: This is complex, technical work in supporting, installing, and repairing the City’s hardware equipment (i.e., PCs; printers; laptops; and computer peripherals). Work involves troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing various hardware problems and failures in a timely, cost effective manner. An employee in this classification must work independently and receives general supervision and technical direction from a technical superior, including a Systems Engineer. Employees in this position may be required to work on an assigned shift and are on call 24 Hours per day 7 days per week.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (The examples of work listed in this class specification are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. Confers with system engineers, users, vendors, and technical superiors in order to define computer hardware failures and define cost effective and timely corrective remedies. Repairs, replaces, exchanges, and/or upgrades personal computers, laptops, printers and all associated peripheral components, such as computer processors; interfaces, power supplies; disk drives/controllers; tape drives/controllers; cathode ray tubes; line/character printers; laser printers; other unit record equipment; multiplexes, etc. Uses test equipment, diagnostic devices, and diagnostic software to determine the nature of computer hardware problems. Contacts vendors to replace defective component parts, and follows-up with the vendor to insure that the problem was corrected properly. Performs acceptance testing on new, replacement, or repaired computer units, computer components or related peripheral equipment. Maintains records of defective, replaced, repaired or sent to repair computer components and related peripherals and circuitry. Serves in a consultant capacity to management and user departments when these agencies are evaluating the purchase of new hardware or when they are evaluating when to retire old equipment. Attends training classes and accomplishes self-training on the job as required.

Monitors the performance, timeliness, and quality of work of personal computer hardware repair vendors, by tracking the amount of time a component takes to repair and testing it once it has been returned. Performs a quality analysis of components sent out to repair. Establishes a set of established diagnostic testing routines for testing computer equipment and all related peripherals. Assists the help desk personnel in developing a problem diagnostic script. Performs other related work as required. DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS: (The knowledge, abilities and skills identified in this class specification represent those needed to perform the duties of the class. Additional knowledge, abilities and skills may be applicable for individual positions in the employing departments.) Considerable knowledge and understanding of basic electronic and mechanical functioning of computer processors, interfaces, power supplies, disk drives/controllers, tape drives/controllers, cathode ray tubes, line/character printers, other unit record equipment, multiplexes, etc. Considerable understanding of Windows NT Operating System. Some understanding of the electrical specifications of electrical and mechanical interfaces, components, peripherals, and like items. Some understanding of electronic schematic diagrams and ability to relate such diagrams to the electronic components and systems they represent. Some knowledge of specifications for both electrical and mechanical systems, interfaces, components, peripherals and like items. Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot electrical and mechanical problems on a microcomputer and associated peripherals (i.e. power supplies, disk drives/controllers, tape drives/controllers, cathode ray tubes, line/character printers and all computer related peripherals, etc.). Ability to attend to the detail of assuring proper system care to minimize maintenance problems. Ability to diagnose problems with regards to Microsoft Windows NT operating system and other related Microsoft microcomputer system control programs. Ability to work with individuals or other disciplines, such as analysts, programmers, users, managers, contractors and vendors to seek highest system performance. Ability to work under pressure and time constraints. Ability to comprehend interdependent system activity in a complex situation.

DESIRABLE BASIC TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Associate’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or related field and considerable (2 years-4 years) experience in a computer hardware repair, maintenance, troubleshooting and installation. OR Equivalent combination of training and experience beyond high school graduation.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT: IBM compatible computers with keyboard; telephones, copiers, fax machines; screw drivers; pliers; and multimeter. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate hand held equipment. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, talk, hear, use hand to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tool or controls; and reach with hands and arms; see color and depth perception; drive a motor vehicle; light to moderate lifting is occasionally required.
