ABSTRACT Extract of Echinacea is a herbal preparation which has been shown to have immunostimulant properties. Evidence suggests that preparation of Echinacea stimulates the macrophage activity in vivo and in vitro, as a part of the immune response. Macrophages treated with extract of Echinacea enhanced the cytotoxicity and microbicidal activity against intracellular bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes. Other investigations proved that extract of preparation of Echinacea stimulated the macrophage cytokine secretion including TNF-?, IL-1? , IL-1?, IL-6, IL-10 and nitric oxide. A conclusion could be drawn, that the extract of Echinacea could enhance the phagocytosis and microbicidal activity of macrophages against intracellular bacteria such as Salmonella typhi.
