‘Philosophy and Equitable Sharing of the Benefits of Science’ UNESCO, Room IV – 17 November 2011 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

This round table will aim at analyzing and defining the concepts of “equitable sharing” and “benefits of sciences”, as well as their articulation with the spirit of justice, from a philosophical, ethical, juridical and also political perspective. It will also examine the normative texts and instruments that aim at achieving the sharing of benefits of science, and analyze the challenges for their application, including in such fields as the handling of human genetic resources and the access to medicine. 10 A.M. – 1 P.M. Jessica WYNDHAM (Australia) **** Biographies of participants (in alphabetical order) Irma Julienne ANGUE MEDOUX is a Doctor of Philosophy (2008), Lecturer at the University of Paris 8, and Assistant in the Department of Philosophy at the University Omar Bongo, Libreville. Enrique Domingo DUSSEL AMBROSINI is Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the Iztapalapa campus of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (Autonomous Metropolitan University, UAM) and also teaches courses at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM). He has an undergraduate degree in Philosophy (from the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo/National University of Cuyo in Mendoza, Argentina), a Doctorate from the Complutense University of Madrid, a Doctorate in History from the Sorbonne in Paris, and an

undergraduate degree in Theology obtained through studies in Paris and Münster. He has been awarded Doctorates Honoris Causa from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland and the University of San Andrés in Bolivia. He is the founder with others of the movement referred to as the Philosophy of Liberation, and his work is concentrated in the field of Ethics and Political Philosophy. Marie FAYAD is the Head of the Department of Philosophy, Director of its Sophia laboratory, Professor of political philosophy and moral philosophy. She has several national and international publications to her credit, many of which are in the fields of political philosophy and philosophy of law. The last study in the press in Heidelberg: Le droit, voie dialectique de l’Etat dans la gestion des conflits politiques et éthico religieux (The law, the State’s dialectic way in the management of political and ethical religious conflicts). Charles Roman MBELE teaches philosophy at the Ecole normale supérieure (ENS) of Yaounde, after studying philosophy at the University of Yaounde until obtaining the Master Degree, at the University of Paris-I Panthéon-Sorbonne where he received a New Ph.D. and at the University of Strasbourg, where he maintained a Habilitation to Supervise Researches. A recent book by Editions CLE in Yaounde of 2009: Essai sur le post-colonialisme en tant que code de l’inégalité (Essay on post-colonialism as a code in inequality). Thomas POGGE received his PhD from Harvard. He is Leitner Professor of Philosophy and International Affairs at Yale, concentrating on political philosophy, ethics and Immanuel Kant. Pogge’s current work is focused on a team effort towards developing a complement to the pharmaceutical patent regime that would improve access to advanced medicine for the poor worldwide (www.healthimpactfund.org) Doris SCHROEDER’s background is in philosophy, politics and economics. She is Director of the Centre for Professional Ethics at the University of Central Lancashire UK, Professorial Fellow at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics, University of Melbourne in Australia and Adjunct Professor at the University of Oslo's Ethics Program. Jessica WYNDHAM is Associate Director of the AAAS Scientific Responsibility, Human Rights and Law Program where she directs the "Article 15" project, aimed at engaging the scientific community in defining and promoting the right to enjoy the benefits of scientific progress. Jessica has worked extensively with national human rights institutions, served as Legal Adviser to OHCHR in Ecuador and is currently a consultant to the UN Independent Expert in the field of cultural rights. She is also an Adjunct Professor at George Washington University.
